Buy the 5.1.2 model if you want the additional side-firing surround channels, have a room where those channels can work, and accept the model’s price and placement requirements. Choose 3.1.2 if you mainly want a center channel for dialogue, a wireless subwoofer, and overhead effects in a simpler setup.
Samsung’s HW-Q800D (5.1.2) and HW-Q700D (3.1.2) make the difference concrete. Both list Dolby Atmos support, so Atmos is not exclusive to the higher channel count. The deciding factors are the actual speaker layout, included accessories, TV and source compatibility, room arrangement, and your local price—not the label alone.

What 5.1.2 and 3.1.2 mean
Soundbar channel labels describe the intended speaker layout:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- The first number is the number of main speaker channels.
- The second number is the subwoofer or low-frequency-effects channel.
- The final number is the number of height channels, normally produced by speakers that fire upward toward the ceiling.
That makes 5.1.2 and 3.1.2 useful shorthand, but not a guarantee of a particular listening experience. Room dimensions, reflective surfaces, seating position, furniture, calibration, and the soundtrack all affect how clearly you perceive surround and height effects. Treat the label as a description of the hardware arrangement, then verify the individual model’s specification.

The practical difference in Samsung’s examples
Samsung lists the HW-Q800D as a 5.1.2 system with 11 speakers, including side-firing and up-firing speakers. The HW-Q700D is listed as 3.1.2 with nine speakers, a center speaker and up-firing speakers; side-firing speakers are not listed in its specification. Both examples include a wireless subwoofer.
In other words, the Q800D’s extra two main channels are represented by the listed side-firing speakers. The Q700D keeps a center channel, subwoofer channel, and two height channels without that listed side-firing pair. Neither layout automatically wins in every room.
Samsung HW-Q800D vs. HW-Q700D specifications
| Buying factor | HW-Q800D example | HW-Q700D example |
|---|---|---|
| Published layout | 5.1.2 | 3.1.2 |
| Published speaker count | 11 speakers | 9 speakers |
| Speaker directions listed by Samsung | Side-firing and up-firing speakers | Up-firing speakers; side-firing speakers are not listed |
| Subwoofer | Wireless subwoofer included | Wireless subwoofer included |
| Rear speakers in the box | Not included | Not included in the cited specification |
| Optional rear expansion | Samsung identifies the SWA-9500S wireless rear kit as separately sold in its cited regional material | No rear-speaker inclusion is stated in the cited specification |
| Dolby Atmos | Supported formats are listed; compatible Atmos content is required | Supported formats are listed |
| Best-matched priority | More listed surround channels and side-firing hardware | Simpler layout while retaining center and height channels |
This is a specification comparison, not a controlled listening test. The published speaker count does not establish that one product will sound better in every installation.
What Dolby Atmos support does—and does not—tell you
Both products list Dolby Atmos formats. A 3.1.2 soundbar can therefore play Atmos; choosing 5.1.2 is not a prerequisite for the format.
You need Atmos content
The movie, episode, game, or other source must contain a compatible Dolby Atmos soundtrack. Ordinary stereo or non-Atmos surround audio cannot create the same object-based height information simply because the soundbar has up-firing speakers.

The entire signal path matters
Check the source device, television, connection, and soundbar settings. A source may need to output bitstream or an Atmos-compatible format rather than converting everything to stereo. Use the television’s audio-output menu and the source app or player’s audio settings, then consult the exact regional manual for the selected model.
Wireless Atmos has extra conditions
Samsung’s regional materials state that wireless Dolby Atmos depends on Wi-Fi, supported Samsung television model years, and regional compatibility. Confirm the exact soundbar SKU, television model, source device, software version, and local support before making wireless playback a deciding factor. A wired HDMI connection may be the more predictable choice when your equipment does not meet those conditions.
Samsung’s product range includes several channel counts and feature combinations. For example, its US listing for the HW-S800D also uses a 3.1.2 layout. Do not transfer a feature from one series to another without checking that model’s own page. Samsung’s broader soundbar range page is useful for orientation, but the individual SKU is the authority for included speakers and compatibility.
Choose a 5.1.2 soundbar when these priorities fit
You want side-firing surround information
The Q800D specification explicitly lists side-firing speakers. They are intended to send sound toward the sides of the room so that reflections and seating position can contribute to a wider surround field. If that extra lateral information is the reason you are upgrading from a basic bar, a 5.1.2 design is the more direct match.
Your room can accommodate the layout
Side-firing hardware needs clearance at the ends of the bar and a room in which sound can travel and reflect. Keep the bar centered under the television, avoid covering its side drivers with cabinetry, and consider whether an open-plan room, heavy curtains, or unusually close walls will reduce the intended effect. These are placement considerations, not guarantees of performance.

You may add rear speakers later
The Q800D does not include rear speakers, but Samsung identifies the SWA-9500S wireless rear-speaker kit as a separate purchase in the cited regional materials. Verify that the kit is compatible with your exact local Q800D model before buying; model suffixes and regional bundles can differ. Adding a rear kit changes the system’s hardware, so do not assume a box labeled 5.1.2 already provides rear-channel speakers.

The price difference is acceptable locally
Prices, promotions, stock, and bundles vary by country and date. Compare the current prices in your market for the complete package you actually need, including any rear kit, wall mount, delivery, or installation. The channel label alone does not establish value without that local total.
Choose a 3.1.2 soundbar when simplicity matters more
You want dialogue anchored at the center
The Q700D’s listed center channel is designed to keep voices anchored near the screen while the subwoofer handles low frequencies and the up-firing channels handle height cues. If your main objective is clearer screen-centered presentation with some overhead effect, 3.1.2 supplies those core elements without the additional side-firing layout.
You do not need side-firing channels
Some rooms cannot make useful use of side-firing drivers because the bar is enclosed, the seating is against a wall, or one side opens into another space. In that situation, paying for a layout whose distinguishing hardware is difficult to position may not be worthwhile. A 3.1.2 model can be the more sensible fit while still accepting Atmos content.
You prefer fewer components
Both examples include a wireless subwoofer, so the Q700D is not a single-box system. It does, however, omit the Q800D’s listed side-firing speakers and keeps the published speaker count lower. That can simplify placement and reduce the number of layout decisions, while preserving the center and height channels shown in its specification.

Included components and expansion: check the box, not the badge
Channel notation is not an inventory list. Before ordering, open the exact regional product page and confirm:
- The soundbar itself and its speaker count.
- Whether a wireless subwoofer is included.
- Whether rear speakers are included, optional, or unavailable.
- Which remote, cables, brackets, and power cords are supplied.
- Whether a bundle includes a different model suffix from the one you intended to buy.
For these two examples, the wireless subwoofer is included with both. Neither cited specification lists rear speakers in the box. Samsung’s Canadian page for the Q800D is another regional reference, but local availability and accessories still need to be checked against your market’s SKU: HW-Q800D 5.1.2 ch Q Series Soundbar (2024).
Placement and setup checklist
- Confirm the model and region. Record the full model code, not just Q800D or Q700D. Check the television’s supported audio formats and whether Samsung lists wireless Atmos compatibility for that combination.
- Position the bar centrally. Place it below or in front of the television with the front drivers unobstructed. Keep the ends clear if you selected the 5.1.2 layout so the side-firing drivers are not blocked by the cabinet.
- Keep the up-firing path open. Do not cover the top of the bar with a shelf or sound-absorbing object. Height channels need an unobstructed path toward the ceiling; the reflected result varies with ceiling and room surfaces.
- Place and pair the subwoofer. Follow Samsung’s pairing procedure for the included wireless subwoofer. Start with the subwoofer in the same room and move it only after confirming a stable connection.
- Use the appropriate TV connection. Connect through the television’s HDMI ARC or eARC port when you want the TV’s apps and connected devices to send audio to the bar. If a source device is connected directly to the soundbar, use the soundbar input and set the source to an Atmos-compatible output where available.
- Select the right audio mode. Avoid forcing a stereo mode when testing Atmos. Select the source’s original or bitstream output, then verify that the soundbar reports the incoming format according to its display or app.
- Update before judging the system. Install any firmware update Samsung provides for the exact regional model, then retest the same Atmos title. Firmware and menu labels can differ by model and market.
- Test from the main seat. Use a known Atmos program and listen from the intended seating position. Move only one variable at a time—source setting, cable, placement, or mode—so you can identify what changed.
How room conditions change the result
Side-firing channels need a cooperative room
The 5.1.2 layout adds side-firing hardware on paper, but the perceived width depends on how those sound waves interact with the room. Symmetrical side walls and a seating position that is not pressed against one wall generally give the effect more opportunity to develop. A highly open room or heavily irregular furnishings can make the advantage less obvious.
Up-firing height is not the same as ceiling speakers
Both layouts use two listed height channels, and both rely on upward-firing drivers in these examples. Reflections from the ceiling influence the result, so ceiling height, texture, beams, and suspended fixtures matter. Atmos metadata is still valuable, but no channel label can promise a fixed height effect in every room.
Seating and television position matter
Center the main seat with the television and soundbar where possible. If the bar is far off-axis, hidden in a deep cabinet, or placed well below the screen, dialogue anchoring and surround geometry can suffer regardless of whether the label reads 5.1.2 or 3.1.2.

Common buying mistakes and fixes
Mistake: assuming 3.1.2 cannot play Atmos
Fix: Check the model’s supported formats. Samsung lists Dolby Atmos for both the Q800D and Q700D examples; the source must still provide compatible Atmos content.
Mistake: assuming 5.1.2 includes rear speakers
Fix: Read the included-components section. The Q800D’s cited specification does not list rear speakers in the box, and the Q700D specification does not either. Treat the separately sold SWA-9500S kit as an extra purchase only after confirming local compatibility.
Mistake: comparing only the first number
Fix: Compare speaker directions, subwoofer inclusion, expansion options, inputs, wireless requirements, and your room. The difference between these examples is not simply “more is better”; it is side-firing hardware versus a simpler center-and-height layout.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Mistake: blaming the soundbar when the source is not Atmos
Fix: Verify the title’s audio track, the television or player output setting, the HDMI path, and the soundbar’s incoming-format indicator. Test with a known compatible source before changing hardware.
Mistake: treating a regional feature as universal
Fix: Check the local product page and full model suffix. Samsung’s wireless Atmos conditions refer to Wi-Fi, television model years, and regional support, so a feature shown in one country may not apply identically elsewhere.
A decision framework you can use before checkout
| If your priority is… | Lean toward… | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Wider surround presentation from the bar itself | 5.1.2 | The Q800D specification lists side-firing as well as up-firing speakers. |
| Center-focused dialogue and overhead effects with a simpler layout | 3.1.2 | The Q700D lists a center channel, two height channels, and a wireless subwoofer without listed side-firing speakers. |
| Potential rear-speaker expansion | 5.1.2 example, subject to compatibility | Samsung identifies the SWA-9500S as separately sold for the Q800D in cited regional material. |
| Lowest equipment complexity | 3.1.2 | It has fewer listed speakers and no side-firing placement to accommodate. |
| Wireless Atmos convenience | Either, only after checking compatibility | Both list Atmos, but wireless operation depends on Wi-Fi, TV model, source, software, and region. |
What to verify on publication day in your country
- Exact SKU: Confirm the complete model code and year; Q800D and Q700D suffixes differ by region.
- Current price: Compare the soundbar, subwoofer, and any optional rear kit as one system. Do not rely on an old launch price or a different country’s promotion.
- In-box contents: Make sure the listing explicitly names the subwoofer and does not imply that rear speakers are included when they are sold separately.
- Television support: Check ARC/eARC behavior, supported Atmos formats, and Samsung’s model-year conditions for wireless Atmos.
- Return policy: A room can reveal placement limitations that specifications cannot. A return window is useful if side-firing reflections or height effects do not suit your space.
Bottom line
Choose Samsung’s 5.1.2 approach when the listed side-firing channels are worth the extra cost and your room lets you position the bar openly. Choose 3.1.2 when you want a center channel, wireless subwoofer, and two height channels without paying for or accommodating side-firing hardware. The Q800D and Q700D show that both can support Dolby Atmos; the right purchase is the one whose complete speaker layout, source compatibility, accessories, and regional price fit your room.
