Sam Altman says OpenAI would put its mission ahead of its share price if the company eventually goes public—even if a decision made in service of that mission caused the stock to fall. The pledge came in a Vanity Fair interview published October 5, 2026, and reported by The Next Web. It is a statement of intent, not an IPO announcement or proof of how OpenAI would act in a future dispute.
What Sam Altman said about OpenAI’s share price
Vanity Fair global editorial director Mark Guiducci asked whether going public would change OpenAI’s “soul.” Altman replied that even after a public listing, OpenAI would still have a nonprofit governing it and would tell investors that the mission came first. He described the company as “not in a rush” to go public.

Asked what would happen if the stock fell because OpenAI missed profit targets, Altman said: “Then it falls. Maybe it falls a lot, I don’t know.” The Next Web reports that he said mission and strong returns could be compatible, but that the mission would take priority if the two came into tension.
The interview was recorded in San Francisco on September 11, 2026. The exchange concerns a possible future listing: it does not say that OpenAI has filed for an IPO or set a date.

What OpenAI’s current governance structure says
OpenAI’s structure overview says the organization began as a nonprofit in 2015 and created a for-profit subsidiary in 2019. In an update dated October 28, 2025, OpenAI said the nonprofit became the OpenAI Foundation and the for-profit became OpenAI Group PBC.
According to OpenAI, the Foundation retains control of the Group and appoints its board through special governance rights. The company says the public benefit corporation is required to advance OpenAI’s mission and consider broader stakeholder interests. These are OpenAI’s descriptions of its structure and obligations; they do not by themselves establish how a future board would resolve a particular conflict or how those obligations would affect shareholders after a listing.

At the recapitalization closing, OpenAI said the Foundation held 26% of OpenAI Group, Microsoft held roughly 27%, and current and former employees and investors held the remaining 47%. The company also described a Foundation warrant tied to a valuation milestone. These are figures from OpenAI’s 2025 disclosure, not current market values or predictions about how a public market would price the company.
What OpenAI means by its mission
In an April 26, 2026 statement titled “Our principles,” Altman wrote: “Our mission is to ensure that AGI benefits all of humanity.” The statement names five principles: democratization, empowerment, universal prosperity, resilience, and adaptability. It also says OpenAI expects to adjust its positions as it learns and acknowledges the need for scrutiny.

This provides context for the mission Altman says would take precedence over share price. It records the company’s stated rationale and principles; it is not independent evidence that every company decision fulfills them.

- It establishes Altman’s stated intention: if OpenAI goes public, he says the company will put its mission first, even if that choice hurts the stock.
- It does not establish that OpenAI will go public: Altman said the company is not in a rush, and no IPO was announced in the interview.
- It does not show how a real trade-off would be handled: no future decision, board response, investor reaction, or share-price outcome is tested by a hypothetical answer.
- It is distinct from formal governance: OpenAI describes a Foundation that controls OpenAI Group PBC, but the structure page and interview do not settle how a future public-company conflict would play out.
Altman also told Vanity Fair he has no direct equity in OpenAI and described a small indirect exposure through an old Y Combinator investment. That is his account in the interview, not an independently audited statement of his full financial interests.
