In a Vanity Fair interview published October 5, 2026, OpenAI cofounder and CEO Sam Altman said he hopes to have more children, does not yet know what age he would let his children use ChatGPT, and sees no rush to take OpenAI public. He also discussed preparedness, AI safety, his relationships with Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg, and Luca Guadagnino’s film Artificial. These are Altman’s accounts and opinions, not independent confirmation of company plans or claims about AI.

What did Sam Altman say about his children and having a large family?

Altman said he has two children and expects to have more. He described becoming a parent as the best thing he has done and said that he and his partner want to be present for each child. He added that, if time were unlimited, he would want a large family.

He distinguished that personal preference from pronatalism framed as a response to population decline: he said his desire for a big family is not about trying to counter demographic change. “I love our kids so much and I know I’ll have more kids, but there’s no part of it which is like we got to fight against population decline. I love a big family. It’s really great.”

What is Altman’s view on children using ChatGPT?

Altman said he does not have an age in mind at which he would let his own children use ChatGPT, and that the answer is “certainly not now.” He favors limiting technology for young children and said society does not yet understand all of technology’s effects on them.

That is his parenting judgment, not an age recommendation supported by child-development evidence in the interview. The conversation did not establish a general rule for families or assess developmental effects.

Does Altman have a bugout plan?

Altman described himself as having “a survivalist mindset” and said he is intellectually interested in preparedness. He said an off-grid-capable ranch is what some people might regard as a bugout plan: “At our ranch, we can survive off-grid, which I guess to many people would be considered a bugout plan.”

He recalled keeping masks, canned food and water-purification tablets at home during COVID, and argued that people tend to underprepare for unusual events. Those were personal anecdotes, not a checklist or recommendation for what readers should buy. He denied having the bunker with firearms shown in the film trailer and said he does not have a submarine or helicopter.

What did Altman say about Luca Guadagnino’s film Artificial?

Altman said the trailer showed someone dressed like him, carrying a similar backpack and walking outside his home. He recognized aspects of Andrew Garfield’s walk and mannerisms and recalled waving to the actor once. He said the experience felt strange, but cautioned that the film was not meant to be an accurate portrayal: “I don’t think they’re going for accuracy.”

In the interview, Guiducci reported that Amazon had announced it would not distribute the film, that it had been sold to Neon, and that Neon planned a Christmas Day release. That was publication-time reporting in an interview published October 5, 2026; it does not establish the film’s current release availability.

Is OpenAI planning an IPO?

Asked about a possible public offering, Altman said OpenAI was “not in a rush” and said a nonprofit would continue to govern the company if it went public. He also said the company would put its mission ahead of shareholder interests if the two came into conflict.

These are statements of Altman’s position and intended governance structure, not confirmation of an IPO filing, schedule or final future terms. The interview did not provide a timetable.

What did he say about his equity?

Altman said he has no direct equity in OpenAI and only a tiny indirect exposure through an old Y Combinator investment. He said he wished he had taken stock, explaining that he had viewed forgoing equity as a way to make decisions for humanity rather than for personal financial interests. Those remarks about his holdings and compensation are his own account.

What did Altman say about Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg?

Altman called Elon Musk a bully, while saying he would work with him: “Look, I don’t like bullies, and I think Elon’s a bully.” About Mark Zuckerberg, Altman said that before knowing him he had an “evil caricature” of him in his mind, and reflected that he had been projecting assumptions about people he perceived as powerful and influential.

What did Altman say about AI safety and mental health?

Altman said OpenAI has worked to reduce self-harm and argued that conversational AI could become a major mental-health tool. He also acknowledged that some uses can be harmful and that experts disagree about interventions such as mandated reporting. He said private conversations should not be shared with researchers without consent and that OpenAI should work with the mental-health community.

When asked what people should not use AI for, he answered: “Replacing human connection.” The interview does not independently evaluate ChatGPT’s safety or clinical benefits. In discussing responsibility, Altman said OpenAI should be accountable when its tools do not behave as expected. He advocated advancing capabilities alongside alignment, monitorability, safeguards, and social and government infrastructure, and described training pauses when the company believed it needed more safety progress. These are his descriptions of the company’s work and his policy arguments, not third-party validation.

How should readers interpret the suicide figures mentioned?

Guiducci referred to a prior Altman interview and attributed two figures to Altman’s earlier remarks: 15,000 suicides per week and 10 percent of the world talking to ChatGPT. The interviewer used those figures to derive 1,500 people per week by arithmetic. The Vanity Fair conversation does not supply the original data, definitions or verification, so those numbers should not be treated as independently established statistics on the basis of this interview.

What did the interview say about new products?

The discussion covered possible uses of conversational AI in mental health and the need for safeguards, but the interview account summarized here does not establish a specific product launch, release date or new feature. Altman’s broader comments about AI’s potential should not be read as a product announcement.

Where did these comments come from?

The source is Mark Guiducci’s Vanity Fair interview, “Sam Altman Sees the Future. Are We In It? (Part 1 of 2),” published October 5, 2026. Vanity Fair says Guiducci interviewed Altman in San Francisco on September 11 and October 2, and that the conversations were lightly edited for length and clarity. The magazine identifies Altman as OpenAI cofounder and CEO. It also disclosed that Condé Nast has a limited-term content licensing agreement with OpenAI allowing OpenAI to display Condé Nast content in search results.
