Neither stock is a universal winner. Salesforce is a more concentrated bet on customer-relationship management (CRM), enterprise applications and the monetization of Agentforce and Data 360. IBM combines software, consulting and infrastructure, with hybrid cloud and AI at the center of its stated strategy. The better portfolio fit depends on whether you want application-software growth, a broader technology-services mix, dividend continuity, or a valuation that has been checked with current market data.
The short answer: choose the exposure, not the headline
Salesforce and IBM are enterprise-technology companies, but owning either one gives you a very different business mix. Salesforce is primarily an applications company. Its products sit in sales, service, marketing, commerce, data and analytics workflows, and its recent growth narrative adds autonomous AI agents through Agentforce. IBM is a diversified technology-services company spanning software, consulting and infrastructure. Its published strategy emphasizes helping large organizations operate across hybrid-cloud environments while applying AI to business and IT processes.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
That distinction matters more than a simple “growth stock versus value stock” label. Salesforce can give a portfolio more direct exposure to subscription applications, customer data and enterprise AI adoption. IBM can provide exposure to software plus consulting and infrastructure contracts, along with a much longer record of annual dividend increases. Neither description tells you which shares are attractively priced today: the available disclosures do not include date-matched share prices or valuation multiples.
The latest periods are also not aligned. Salesforce reported its quarter ended July 31, 2026, on August 26, 2026. The IBM quarterly information available for this comparison covers the quarter ended March 31, 2026, released April 22, 2026. Treat the operating figures as directional context, not as a same-quarter league table.

What you are buying in each company
Salesforce: a focused CRM and enterprise-applications platform
Salesforce organizes its business around cloud applications that manage customer-facing and related enterprise processes. CRM is the core identity, but the platform also covers marketing, commerce, service, analytics and data capabilities. This concentration can make the investment thesis easier to follow: growth depends heavily on customers expanding subscriptions, adopting additional clouds and accepting new AI and data products.
Its current strategic language places Agentforce and Data 360 among the products expected to extend that platform. Agentforce is positioned as an agentic-AI layer that can perform work inside customer workflows, while Data 360 is intended to unify and activate enterprise data. Those products may increase the amount Salesforce earns per customer, but product announcements and reported annual recurring revenue (ARR) are indicators of adoption and strategy, not proof of durable incremental profit.
IBM: software, consulting and infrastructure under one roof
IBM’s 2025 annual report describes a business divided among software, consulting and infrastructure. Software includes platforms and tools used to run and manage enterprise systems. Consulting helps organizations design, implement and operate technology projects. Infrastructure serves workloads that still require specialized hardware, systems software or high-performance environments.
IBM presents hybrid cloud and AI as strategic focus areas rather than as a single product line. That gives investors exposure to several spending budgets, but it also makes results harder to attribute to one growth engine. Consulting demand, software renewals, infrastructure cycles and large enterprise projects can move at different speeds. The mix can be an advantage when one area is soft, yet it can dilute the effect of a fast-growing product category.
What the latest disclosed numbers actually show
Salesforce has the newer quarter and the more detailed set of figures in the available disclosures. IBM’s figures below are management’s stated outlook and balance-sheet information from its first-quarter release, not a substitute for second-quarter results.
| Company and period | Disclosed operating figures | How to interpret them |
|---|---|---|
| Salesforce FY26, announced February 25, 2026 | $41.5 billion revenue, up 10% year over year; $15.0 billion operating cash flow; $14.4 billion free cash flow; 20.1% GAAP operating margin; 34.1% non-GAAP operating margin | A full-year view of growth, cash generation and the difference between GAAP and adjusted profitability |
| Salesforce Q2 FY27, quarter ended July 31, 2026 | $11.3 billion revenue, up 11% year over year; $33.5 billion current remaining performance obligation (cRPO), up 14%; Agentforce ARR above $1.5 billion | A more recent quarter with a forward-looking contracted-revenue indicator and an AI adoption metric reported by the company |
| Salesforce FY27 outlook, updated August 26, 2026 | $46.1 billion–$46.4 billion revenue, up 11%–12%; slightly above 3 percentage points of growth attributed to Informatica | Company guidance that includes acquired revenue; it should not be read as organic growth |
| IBM Q1 2026, quarter ended March 31, 2026 | Management expected more than 5% full-year constant-currency revenue growth; $11.8 billion in cash, restricted cash and marketable securities at quarter end | An outlook and liquidity snapshot, not realized full-year performance or a matched-quarter comparison with Salesforce |
Salesforce’s cRPO is the value of contracted revenue expected to be recognized in future periods. It is useful for visibility, but it is not the same as next-quarter revenue, cash flow or profit. The Agentforce ARR figure is also company-reported; definitions and product packaging can evolve as the offering develops.

IBM’s “more than 5%” figure is a constant-currency outlook. Currency movements can make reported growth differ from that rate. Because the available IBM information does not provide a comparable Q2 revenue, margin, cash-flow or backlog set, a precise growth and profitability ranking would overstate what these periods establish.
Salesforce’s growth case—and what could weaken it
Subscription expansion and contractual visibility
Salesforce’s FY26 revenue reached $41.5 billion, a 10% year-over-year increase. In Q2 FY27, revenue rose 11% to $11.3 billion, while cRPO grew 14% to $33.5 billion. A faster increase in cRPO than quarterly revenue can indicate stronger future contract commitments, although recognition timing, renewals and deal duration all affect the relationship.
The FY27 revenue outlook of $46.1 billion to $46.4 billion implies 11%–12% growth. Salesforce said slightly more than three percentage points of that growth would come from Informatica. The August outlook also incorporated expected contributions from pending Contentful and Fin transactions. Fin’s acquisition was completed on September 10, 2026, according to Salesforce’s investor news listing; the August guidance was issued before that completion. Therefore, the headline guidance is reported-company growth, not an organic-growth forecast.
Agentforce and Data 360
Salesforce reported Agentforce ARR above $1.5 billion in Q2 FY27 and CEO Marc Benioff said, in the FY26 results release, “Agentic AI is a tailwind for our business, and we’re well on our way to $63 billion in revenue in FY30.” That sentence is management’s strategic view and long-range target, not a guaranteed result.
For an investor, the practical questions are whether customers are paying for agents as incremental products, whether usage produces sustainable gross margin, and whether implementation work increases or reduces consulting and support costs. A rising ARR figure can coexist with high sales incentives, experimentation or product substitution. Look for renewals, attach rates, cash conversion and margin behavior over several reporting periods rather than treating one AI metric as proof of a completed transformation.
Acquisition integration
Informatica, Contentful and Fin change the scope of the company being measured. Acquisitions can add data, content or financial-workflow capabilities and create cross-selling opportunities. They can also add integration costs, purchase-accounting effects and execution risk. When comparing Salesforce’s growth with a stand-alone software company, separate reported growth, acquired growth and any organic-growth measure that management discloses.

IBM’s growth case—and what could weaken it
A diversified route to enterprise spending
IBM’s combination of software, consulting and infrastructure gives it several ways to participate in an enterprise technology budget. Consulting can help clients plan and deploy AI or hybrid-cloud systems; software can generate recurring license or subscription revenue; infrastructure can support specialized workloads. The trade-off is that these businesses have different sales cycles, capital requirements and sensitivity to corporate spending.
IBM’s Q1 2026 release said management expected more than 5% full-year constant-currency revenue growth. That is a forecast, not a reported result. To assess execution, an investor should examine subsequent quarterly revenue by segment, software recurring indicators, consulting bookings or backlog, infrastructure demand and the effect of currency translation.
Hybrid cloud and AI are broad strategic themes
The 2025 annual report’s strategy discussion establishes IBM’s priorities, but it does not independently demonstrate that IBM’s AI or hybrid-cloud offerings will outgrow Salesforce’s applications. IBM’s breadth can help it sell multi-year transformation programs, yet broad positioning can make it difficult to isolate which products are creating incremental economic value.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsEvaluate IBM’s AI claims through customer adoption, software revenue, consulting utilization, renewal rates and cash generation. A large services engagement may produce important revenue without creating the same recurring economics as a software subscription. Conversely, consulting can deepen relationships and create a channel for later software sales. The investment question is how those pieces work together in reported results, not which company uses the more prominent AI vocabulary.
Profitability, cash flow and capital returns
Salesforce’s disclosed cash profile
For FY26, Salesforce reported $15.0 billion of operating cash flow and $14.4 billion of free cash flow. It also reported a 20.1% GAAP operating margin and a 34.1% non-GAAP operating margin. These measures answer different questions: GAAP includes required accounting expenses, while non-GAAP excludes the items defined in the company’s reconciliation. Compare like with like and read the reconciliation before using adjusted margins in a valuation model.
Salesforce reported $1.6 billion in FY26 dividends. A May 28, 2026 announcement set the quarterly dividend at $0.44 per share. That amount is a per-share distribution, not a yield; yield requires a date-specific share price. Dividend policy can change, and a rapidly rising share price can reduce yield even when the cash dividend rises.

IBM’s income profile
IBM’s Q1 release noted that its quarterly dividend had been increased for 31 consecutive years. That record may appeal to investors who prioritize continuity, but a streak does not guarantee future increases, total return or a particular yield. The available IBM information here does not provide a date-matched yield, payout ratio, free cash flow or operating margin, so it cannot support a direct income or profitability ranking against Salesforce.

IBM reported $11.8 billion in cash, restricted cash and marketable securities for the quarter ended March 31, 2026. Cash is only one part of capital allocation. Review debt maturities, pension obligations, acquisitions, buybacks, capital spending and the cash required to support consulting and infrastructure operations before deciding how dependable distributions are for your portfolio.
Valuation is the missing decision axis
Operating growth does not establish whether either stock is cheap or expensive. The available disclosures contain no date-matched share prices or comparable valuation multiples. Do not infer relative value from Salesforce’s higher growth, IBM’s dividend history or the size of either company.
Before investing, record the same-day price and shares outstanding for both companies, then calculate measures that fit their business models:
- Forward price-to-earnings: use a clearly identified earnings estimate and note whether it is GAAP or adjusted.
- Price-to-free-cash-flow: use a consistent trailing or forward cash-flow period and account for unusual working-capital movements.
- Enterprise value to operating measures: include debt and cash when comparing companies with different capital structures.
- Free-cash-flow yield: divide a defined annual free-cash-flow figure by the current market value; do not substitute a dividend yield.
- Growth-adjusted comparisons: test whether the premium paid for faster growth is supported by durable margins, retention and cash conversion.
Use the same date, currency convention and accounting basis for both stocks. A multiple from one quarter or market close cannot fairly be compared with a figure from another date.

| If your priority is… | Salesforce may provide… | IBM may provide… | What to verify before buying |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct exposure to enterprise applications and CRM | A concentrated platform tied to customer-facing workflows, data and AI agents | Less direct CRM exposure within a broader technology mix | Customer retention, expansion, product attach rates and competitive pressure |
| Higher disclosed recent growth | 11% Q2 FY27 revenue growth and 14% cRPO growth | A stated expectation of more than 5% full-year constant-currency growth | Matched periods, organic growth, currency effects and the next IBM quarterly release |
| AI monetization tied to an applications platform | Agentforce ARR above $1.5 billion and Data 360 expansion potential | Hybrid-cloud and AI services, software and infrastructure exposure | Paid adoption, renewal economics, margins and cash conversion |
| Long dividend history | $0.44 quarterly dividend announced May 28, 2026 | Quarterly dividend increased for 31 consecutive years, according to the Q1 release | Current yield, payout ratio, debt service and future cash requirements |
| Broader enterprise-technology diversification | More concentrated in applications and data products | Software, consulting and infrastructure in one company | Segment trends, cyclicality and the effect of services and hardware margins |
This is a framework, not an allocation recommendation. A concentrated applications position may complement a portfolio that already owns diversified industrial or infrastructure businesses. IBM’s breadth may be useful to an investor who wants one holding spanning services, software and systems, but it does not remove company-specific or technology-cycle risk.
Best Value
A practical comparison process before you place an order
- Define the job of the position. Write down whether the holding is intended to provide application growth, income, diversification, inflation protection or a long-term compounder. A stock cannot be evaluated without a portfolio role.
- Set a time horizon and loss limit. AI adoption and enterprise contracts can take years to mature. Decide how much volatility and drawdown you can tolerate before looking at a forecast.
- Align the reporting periods. Use Salesforce’s quarter ended July 31, 2026 alongside IBM’s corresponding reported quarter when available. Until IBM’s Q2 2026 information is available, label the comparison as mismatched.
- Separate reported from organic growth. Adjust Salesforce’s FY27 guidance for the stated Informatica contribution and the acquisition effects described in the August release. For IBM, distinguish constant-currency guidance from eventual reported revenue.
- Read cash flow and margins together. Check whether operating cash flow, free cash flow and GAAP margins improve with revenue. Keep Salesforce’s 34.1% non-GAAP margin separate from its 20.1% GAAP margin.
- Test the AI thesis. Track paid customers, ARR definitions, usage, renewal rates, product attach and incremental costs. Treat management targets, including the $63 billion FY30 statement, as scenarios rather than base-case facts.
- Measure the income requirement correctly. Convert each dividend per share into a yield using the same current share price date, then test payout sustainability against cash flow and debt obligations.
- Calculate valuation on one date. Record price, market capitalization, enterprise value and the earnings or free-cash-flow denominator used. Re-run the calculation after major earnings releases or acquisitions.
- Stress the downside. Model slower enterprise spending, weaker renewals, delayed AI adoption, acquisition integration costs, currency changes and higher financing costs. Decide in advance which evidence would invalidate your thesis.
- Size the position for uncertainty. Diversify across companies and sectors, and avoid making either stock an outsized holding solely because its recent growth or dividend history is attractive.
Key risks that can change the decision
Acquisition and integration risk at Salesforce
Informatica is already included in the FY27 growth framing, while the August guidance also referred to pending Contentful and Fin transactions. Combining products, sales teams, data architectures and accounting systems can delay expected synergies. Acquired revenue can make the top line look healthier even if the pre-acquisition business slows, so monitor organic growth and post-close margins separately.
AI execution and measurement risk
Agentforce ARR and IBM’s AI strategy are company-reported indicators. Neither proves that AI will create durable, high-margin revenue. Customers may run pilots without broad deployment, vendors may bundle features into existing subscriptions, and infrastructure or services costs may rise before revenue scales.
Period and currency risk
Salesforce’s latest disclosed quarter in this comparison is newer than IBM’s. IBM’s outlook is stated in constant currency, while reported results will reflect exchange rates. A conclusion drawn from unmatched quarters or mixed currency conventions can be wrong even when every individual number is accurate.
Valuation and concentration risk
Without current prices and multiples, there is no evidence here that one stock offers a better expected return. Salesforce’s concentration can amplify changes in CRM spending and application competition. IBM’s diversified portfolio can mask weakness in one segment and expose investors to consulting utilization, infrastructure cycles and execution across several businesses.
Income is not guaranteed
Salesforce’s $0.44 quarterly dividend and IBM’s 31-year increase streak describe policy at specific points in time. They do not establish future increases, a current yield or protection from share-price losses. Investors depending on portfolio income should verify the latest declaration, ex-dividend date, payout ratio and cash-flow coverage.
How to keep the comparison current
Update the analysis after each company’s next earnings release. For Salesforce, record revenue growth, cRPO, Agentforce ARR, organic growth commentary, acquisition integration and GAAP cash generation. For IBM, obtain the next quarter’s reported revenue by segment, constant-currency performance, software indicators, consulting demand, infrastructure trends, cash flow and capital allocation.
Then refresh same-day prices and valuation ratios. A portfolio decision can change even when the business descriptions remain the same: a higher share price may remove a valuation margin of safety, while a weaker quarter may reduce confidence in the growth thesis. Keep the original assumptions beside the updated figures so you can tell whether the thesis changed because of business performance, price or both.

Salesforce fits investors seeking more concentrated exposure to CRM, enterprise applications and an emerging agentic-AI platform, provided they are comfortable with acquisition integration and the need to prove AI monetization over time. IBM fits investors who prefer a mix of software, consulting and infrastructure and place meaningful weight on a long dividend-increase record, while accepting slower stated growth and a more complex operating model.
The evidence available here supports a business-model and disclosed-performance comparison, not an individualized buy decision. Before choosing, align the periods, separate organic from acquired growth, verify IBM’s newer results, calculate current valuation and test each position against your own risk tolerance, time horizon, liquidity needs and existing diversification.
