A sales deck is more likely to earn a useful next step when it reflects the buyer’s situation, connects relevant product facts to outcomes, supports claims with credible proof, and leaves room for conversation. These practices can make a presentation clearer and more persuasive; they do not guarantee a conversion.
1. Start with the buyer’s situation
Before building slides, learn about the prospect’s company, industry, goals, and challenges. Open by showing what you understand about the business and what the buyer is trying to achieve—not with a history of your company or a list of awards unless those details directly matter to the decision.

The practical test for each slide is: “What’s in it for the prospect?” Salesforce’s guide cites its State of Sales Report as finding that 59% of business buyers say salespeople “fail to grasp the unique goals they aim to achieve,” while 86% of buyers say they are more likely to buy when vendors understand their objectives. Salesforce’s article does not identify the report edition or year, so these figures should not be treated as current measurements of all buyers. Read Salesforce’s sales presentation guidance.

Turn discovery into an opening
Use what you learned in discovery to frame the meeting around the buyer’s priorities. State the problem or opportunity as the buyer described it, then check that you have understood it correctly. If the buyer corrects or adds context, adjust the presentation rather than pressing ahead with a prebuilt story.

2. Connect product facts to buyer outcomes
A feature describes what a solution does. A benefit explains why that fact may matter to this buyer. An application makes the connection concrete by showing how the buyer could use it in their own situation. Salesforce Trailhead teaches this facts-benefits-applications progression as part of relationship selling, grounded in what the seller learns through questioning. See the Trailhead lesson on presenting solutions.
Build the connection, not a feature inventory
Choose a small number of product facts that address priorities the prospect has actually expressed. For each one, make the reasoning visible: what the solution does, what advantage that could create, and how it could apply to the prospect’s workflow or goal.

For example, instead of listing a reporting feature on its own, explain which information it makes available, why that visibility could help with a stated decision, and where the buyer would use it. Treat the outcome as a possibility unless you have evidence that supports a stronger claim. Do not present an expected benefit as a guaranteed result.

Choose evidence for relevance and traceability
When deciding which proof to include, ask three questions: does it address the buyer’s stated challenge, can you trace and explain the evidence behind it, and is the outcome clear? A story about a customer with a similar problem may be more useful than a larger but unrelated statistic. Explain what the evidence establishes and avoid implying that one customer’s result predicts another’s.
Keep product facts distinct from conclusions drawn from them. A verified capability is a product fact; a claim that it will improve a buyer’s outcome needs evidence of its own. A statistic used only for visual impact can weaken trust if its source, context, or relevance is unclear.

4. Make the presentation a conversation with a next step
A deck should support a meeting, not replace one. Keep the material concise enough to pause, invite questions, clarify objections, and adapt to what the buyer says. Salesforce’s guide discusses Guy Kawasaki’s 10/20/30 rule as a guideline—not a universal law—so tailor the length and format to the audience and meeting rather than forcing a fixed slide count.
Use a flexible story arc
A useful sequence is buyer context and agenda, the problem or opportunity, the proposed solution and buyer-specific benefits, supporting proof, a concise value summary, and a demonstration if it helps answer the buyer’s questions. Reserve time for objections and discussion instead of filling every minute with slides. Treat this as a starting point, not a mandatory order.

Close by agreeing on what happens next
End with a concrete follow-up action, such as confirming who will review a proposal, scheduling a technical discussion, or identifying what information is needed to make a decision. Before closing, ask whether you have missed anything. Niraj Kapur, author of Salesforce’s guide, recommends the question, “Is there anything I’ve missed?” It is an invitation to surface concerns, not a substitute for listening or resolving them. Highspot’s presentation guidance likewise emphasizes buyer-focused storytelling, proof, and next steps; it is publisher advice, not evidence that a particular deck formula independently causes conversion.
Quick Recap
Check the deck before the meeting
- Does the opening reflect the prospect’s business and stated priorities?
- Can the buyer see how each selected product fact relates to a benefit and a practical application?
- Does each claim have relevant, supportable evidence, with facts separated from inferences?
- Is there enough time for questions, objections, and a clearly agreed follow-up action?
