Short answer: Saga’s August 2023 announcement was about blockchain infrastructure, not a finished multiverse. Its Pegasus protocol was designed to let studios provision dedicated application-specific blockchains, called Chainlets, with configurable fees and interoperability. Saga Ethlet was presented as a separate Ethereum-focused scaling direction. The announcements described an ambitious architecture; they did not independently demonstrate a production-ready multiverse, guaranteed Ethereum-level security, or commercial adoption.
What Saga announced at Gamescom 2023
Saga held its inaugural Multiverse Summit during Gamescom 2023 in Cologne, Germany, aboard the Blue Rhapsody yacht on the Rhine. The company positioned the event as a meeting point for traditional games, Web3 games, entertainment and technology companies. Reported participants included Unity, Samsung, ESL FACEIT Group, The Sandbox, ConsenSys, Immutable, Avalanche and Polygon. Saga also showcased projects from its Innovator Program, including Shrapnel, Cosmic Exodus and AILAND’s shooter project.
The central announcement was Pegasus, a protocol intended to automate the creation of dedicated blockchains for games and other applications. Saga also unveiled Saga Ethlet, described as an Ethereum scaling product combining sidechain-like speed with Ethereum-derived security and one-click deployment. The contemporary announcement establishes a product direction, not independent evidence that Ethlet was production-ready, had demonstrated Ethereum-equivalent security, or had achieved load-tested performance.
Coverage of the event appeared on August 25, 2023, with the GamesBeat page later showing an update dated June 18, 2025. The summit and its announcements are therefore historical events, not proof of what is available or commercially successful in 2026.

What Pegasus was supposed to do
Pegasus was a protocol release rather than a game or virtual world. Saga’s documentation describes an architecture built around a security chain, a platform chain that provisions and maintains networks, and application-specific Chainlets where computation occurs. Saga’s overview is available at https://docs.saga.xyz/.
- Automatic provisioning: a developer requests a configured blockchain instead of building an independent validator network from scratch.
- Dedicated blockspace: the application is isolated from unrelated traffic competing on a shared chain.
- Shared security: Saga validators and interchain-security mechanisms are intended to secure Chainlets, subject to the actual validator, service and governance assumptions.
- Interoperability: Chainlets can communicate with the Saga main chain and supported external networks through systems including Inter-Blockchain Communication (IBC).
- Configurable execution: a Chainlet can use selected virtual-machine, denomination, fee-account and upgrade settings.
A useful comparison is cloud infrastructure: provisioning a dedicated Chainlet is meant to resemble requesting an isolated application environment rather than placing every workload on one shared server. That analogy explains the operating model; it is not a claim that a Chainlet has the same properties as a cloud instance.
What a Chainlet is—and why a game might want one
A Chainlet is Saga’s term for an application-specific blockchain. The proposed advantage is control. A studio can separate gameplay transactions from unrelated activity, set its own fee behavior, plan upgrades independently and distribute different workloads across multiple chains. Saga calls this horizontal scaling and uses terms such as “fully elastic” and “near limitless scalability”; those are architectural claims, not independently verified performance results.

Problems with a shared chain
Games can create bursts of transactions when a popular event, item drop or launch brings in many players. On a shared network, unrelated applications can consume blockspace at the same time, while gas prices and confirmation times change with demand. That volatility complicates onboarding and game-economy design.

What dedicated capacity can improve
- More predictable capacity during game-specific demand spikes.
- Control over whether players pay fees, the studio sponsors them, or another account receives them.
- Freedom to choose a denomination, execution environment and application upgrade schedule.
- Isolation of gameplay activity from speculative or financial traffic elsewhere on the network.
What it does not solve
A Chainlet does not automatically produce good game design, player retention, liquidity, legal rights to digital items or trust in a token economy. It also adds work: wallet integration, account recovery, RPC and explorer operations, monitoring, contract security, upgrades, funding and cross-chain messaging.
How Saga’s “multiverse” interoperability would work
Saga’s thesis was that separate game worlds could remain independently operated while exchanging assets, messages, permissions, player-related state or economic value where developers support it. The summit coverage specifically cited IBC as a way for Chainlets, the Saga chain and other networks to communicate. See the event report at GamesBeat and Saga’s recap at Saga’s event article.

Interoperability is a transport mechanism, not a ready-made multiverse. For a character or item to be useful in another game, studios still need compatible identity and metadata standards, destination-game rules, intellectual-property permissions, economic incentives, secure relayers or bridges and a reason for players to make the journey. A technically transferable sword can still be unusable, overpowered, unsupported or legally unavailable in the receiving game.
Pegasus and Saga Ethlet are different proposals
| Product | Purpose described in 2023 | What the available material establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Pegasus | Automated provisioning and operation of dedicated Chainlets, with shared security and interoperability. | A protocol and infrastructure direction documented by Saga; Chainlet operation has concrete later billing and launch procedures. |
| Saga Ethlet | An Ethereum-oriented scaling solution intended to combine sidechain-like speed, Ethereum security and one-click deployment. | An announced product direction. The supplied contemporary sources do not establish production status, exact security mechanism, data-availability assumptions, independent benchmarks or broad adoption. |
“Ethereum security” is not self-explanatory. A serious evaluation would need to identify the settlement and proof mechanism, trust assumptions, data availability, upgrade controls and audits. Those details are not established by the announcement sources alone.

Saga’s 2023 messaging emphasized predictable or hidden gas costs and the ability to use currencies other than SAGA in applications. Later documentation makes a crucial distinction: the studio pays to provision and operate a Chainlet even when the player sees no blockchain fee.
Rank #4
| Cost or obligation | How it is described |
|---|---|
| Setup | A mainnet Chainlet launch requires a setup fee. |
| Upfront funding | The launch instructions require a deposit covering 30 days of epoch fees: Saga’s launch guide. |
| Recurring operation | Billing uses epoch charges, validator pricing and the selected Chainlet type; see Chainlet billing. |
| Historical estimate | Rebecca Liao was quoted in 2023 estimating approximately $500 per chain per month. That was a 2023 estimate, not a current universal price. |
| Token exposure | Later documentation describes SAGA-token deposits and escrow. The cited material does not establish a single August 2026 dollar price. |
Saga’s billing example uses a one-day epoch and illustrates a setup cost of 10 psaga plus 30 × 10 psaga in daily epoch charges. It is an example, not a universal current tariff. If escrow is depleted, documentation says a Chainlet can eventually be halted or removed after a grace period. A zero base fee may improve onboarding but can also invite spam; Saga’s CLI documentation explicitly warns about that risk.
What launching a Chainlet involves
Saga documents two routes. Exact Chainlet types, versions and fees change, so the current documentation should be checked before a launch.
Web App route
- Use a compatible wallet, such as Keplr, and obtain the required tokens.
- Open app.saga.xyz and select Launch.
- Choose a Chainlet type and version.
- Set the name, token denomination, credit period and optional EVM account.
- Approve the setup fee and required upfront deposit.
Command-line route
- Install SagaCLI and configure the wallet and platform-chain endpoints.
- Run
sagacli chainlet list-typesto view available types and versions. - Select the required type, version, project name, genesis account, denomination and fee policy.
- Submit the launch transaction and maintain the billing escrow.
Saga’s quickstart page lists CLI version 0.4.11 and uses SagaOS 0.5.17 in its example. Those are page-specific documentation signals, not guaranteed current versions. The documented example is:

--genesis-account <EVM-address>:<token-amount>
--denom <your-token-denom>
--fees 2500upsaga
Consult the mainnet quickstart and SagaCLI documentation before reproducing it.
What the adoption numbers actually show
GamesBeat reported that Saga said 224 projects had entered its Innovator Program in under 12 months and that 80% were gaming-oriented. Those are company-reported program figures. They do not mean 224 games launched, reached mainnet, attracted active players, generated revenue or made blockchain functionality central to gameplay. The sources do not provide conversion rates from program participation to production use.
The same caution applies to descriptions such as “permissionless,” “gasless,” “high performance” and “limitless.” They describe Saga’s positioning or goals. Independent evidence would require reproducible throughput and latency tests under realistic game workloads, uptime data, bridge and messaging capacity, cost per active player, security audits and production deployment records.
The practical decision for a game studio
- Throughput: Can the selected Chainlet handle peak player activity, not just a laboratory benchmark?
- Security: Which risks are covered by Saga validators, and which remain in contracts, bridges, relayers, governance and operations?
- Total cost: Include setup, epoch, validator, RPC, storage, monitoring and token-price exposure—not only the historical $500 estimate.
- User experience: Can players use invisible or sponsored transactions, recover accounts and play without managing seed phrases?
- Interoperability: Are partner games committed to shared standards, and what happens if one game changes or shuts down?
- Necessity: Would a conventional backend, an L2 or another appchain stack solve the product problem with less complexity?
Shared security can remove the need to recruit an entirely independent validator set, but it does not protect a flawed game contract or an unsafe asset bridge. A dedicated chain improves isolation and control at the price of another operational dependency.

Saga’s important 2023 idea was infrastructure abstraction: make application-specific blockchains easier for game studios to provision, customize and connect. Pegasus and Chainlets addressed real pain points around shared blockspace, fee volatility and application control. But the summit demonstrated a proposal and ecosystem vision, not a proven consumer multiverse. The unresolved test is whether dedicated chains produce better games and durable player communities rather than simply adding more networks to maintain.
