Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesNo VPN can be called universally safest on the available evidence. A “no-logs” label, one audit, or a company’s home country does not guarantee privacy. Instead of trusting a winner’s claim, check six things: the scope and date of independent audits, the detail behind the logging policy, kill-switch behavior, DNS and IP leak safeguards, app transparency, and how ownership and jurisdiction fit your risks.
Why there is no single safest VPN
A VPN can route some of your network traffic through an encrypted tunnel and mask your IP address from some observers. It does not make you anonymous or secure every device, account, app, or activity. Tom’s Guide frames the common question as “Which VPN is 100% safe?”; the practical answer is that no provider can be declared safest for every user from the evidence available. Tom’s Guide’s VPN safety guidance also cautions that audits can miss issues.

The right choice depends on what you need to protect and against whom. Compare providers only when the evidence covers similar products, platforms, and security questions. The cited sources do not establish a neutral, current, like-for-like test of providers across all six checks, so they do not support a defensible “safest VPN” ranking.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →1. Check what an independent audit actually examined
Do not stop at “independently audited.” Look for the report itself and check the auditor, publication date, scope, and findings. An audit may examine a particular app, server infrastructure, logging policy, or set of company processes; evidence about one area does not automatically cover the others. An audit also describes a system at a point in time, not a permanent guarantee.

IVPN CEO Nick Pestell made that limitation explicit in a June 19, 2026 company statement: “Audits are a snapshot in time: any VPN service receiving a ‘no-logs’ stamp from independent evaluators can update its systems and start collecting sensitive data the following day.” This is a warning from a VPN company’s CEO, not an independent study finding.
For example, DuckDuckGo’s help page says the company works with Securitum on periodic audits and links to a 2025–2026 no-log policy audit and a 2024 security audit. Read the reports to establish what each covered before drawing conclusions about the service. DuckDuckGo VPN audit information

2. Read the logging policy for specifics
Find out what the provider says it collects, why it collects it, and how long it keeps it. Check separately for connection records, traffic data, DNS requests, IP addresses, and diagnostics. A broad “no logs” statement is less useful than a clear policy that defines these categories and explains any exceptions.
Then distinguish a provider’s assurance from supporting evidence. A scoped audit may offer evidence about the systems or policy it examined. A legal case in which a provider could not produce particular records may also be relevant, but it does not prove that no data is ever collected or retained. Tom’s Guide describes such cases as useful evidence while noting that third-party audits can miss issues; neither point establishes a universally safest provider. Tom’s Guide on VPN safety evidence
3. Verify kill-switch availability and behavior
A kill switch is intended to block network traffic if the VPN tunnel drops, reducing the chance that traffic continues outside the tunnel. Check whether the feature is available on your operating system, whether it is enabled by default, and what the provider says it blocks. Feature descriptions are not the same as independent tests of behavior on your device.

A VPN tunnel is not the only part of the connection to check. Review whether the provider explains how it routes DNS requests and how it handles possible exposure of your IP address, WebRTC information, or IPv6 traffic. These are distinct leak paths, so a general “leak protection” claim is less informative than a description of which risks the service addresses.
Proton says its DNS queries run through the encrypted tunnel. That is a provider statement, not an independent test of every app and configuration. A 2025 report authored by NordVPN lists DNS, IP, WebRTC, and IPv6 checks among its testing methods; it illustrates the separate failure modes to consider, but it is not a neutral comparison of VPN providers. 5. Assess how much outsiders can review
Open-source apps and published audit reports give outsiders material to inspect. They do not, by themselves, prove that every backend control, server, or company practice is secure. Check what is open to review and whether published audit reports cover the parts of the service that matter to you.
Proton says its apps are open source and that it publishes audit results. Those are Proton’s claims; the scope of any particular audit still depends on its report. Proton VPN feature information

6. Put ownership and jurisdiction in context
Record who owns and operates a VPN, where the company is based, and where its servers are physically located. These details can help you understand which organizations and laws may be relevant, but a country label alone does not establish how much data a service collects or how securely it operates.

Match the checks to your threat
Before choosing, identify what you are trying to reduce: exposure of traffic on a network, disclosure of your IP address, or collection of activity data by the VPN provider. A VPN may help with some network-level risks, but it is only one part of a wider security picture. CISA’s secure-network-access guidance is organizational guidance, not a consumer VPN ranking. Quick Recap
- For concern about provider data collection, prioritize a specific logging policy and evidence that covers the relevant systems and time period.
- For concern about traffic escaping when a connection fails, check kill-switch support and behavior for your operating system.
- For concern about address exposure, look for clear DNS, IP, WebRTC, and IPv6 safeguards rather than relying on a generic privacy claim.
- For broader confidence, review app code and audit reports while noting what those materials do not cover.
How to make a defensible choice
- Write down the risks you want to reduce and the devices or operating systems you use.
- Read the provider’s logging policy for specific data types, retention, and exceptions.
- Open the latest relevant audit report and verify its auditor, date, scope, and findings.
- Check feature documentation for kill-switch and DNS, IP, and IPv6 protections on your platform.
- Review what app code and audit material are publicly available, then consider ownership and server location as context.
- Choose based on evidence relevant to your use, and avoid treating a badge, country, or single report as a lasting guarantee.
