Which new cars and SUVs made the 2026 safety shortlist?
The IIHS and Consumer Reports guide, updated May 27, 2026, includes vehicles that meet its stated screening criteria: a starting price under $45,000, a Consumer Reports Safety Verdict of Best, good IIHS seat-belt reminder ratings, and an IIHS Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick+ award. The price ceiling is an eligibility criterion, not a promise that every trim or transaction will cost less than $45,000.

How to compare safety ratings
Check crash protection and crash avoidance
IIHS assesses both crashworthiness—how well a vehicle protects occupants in a crash—and crash avoidance and mitigation, technologies intended to prevent a crash or lessen its severity. Consider both categories, and look up results for the specific model year rather than relying on a nameplate or an award from another year. IIHS describes the principle plainly: “A safe vehicle will have good crashworthiness ratings.”

Use NHTSA ratings as separate evidence
NHTSA’s 5-Star Safety Ratings are distinct from IIHS results. NHTSA identifies which model-year 2026 vehicles have been selected for crash testing; not every vehicle has a rating under the program. If a rating is unavailable, that does not mean the vehicle received zero stars. Check what has actually been tested and compare available results alongside IIHS assessments.
Confirm exact model-year and build coverage
A model’s safety award can have qualifications tied to its model year, equipment, or production date. The 2026 list itself specifies that the Palisade must be built after November 2025 and the Sorento after September 2025. Verify that the particular vehicle you are considering falls within the applicable award and rating coverage before buying.

What matters most for a new driver?
IIHS’s guidance is aimed principally at parents of teen drivers, but its vehicle-selection criteria also help adult novices. It advises against vehicles that are too small, too old, or too powerful. For young drivers, IIHS recommends a curb weight of at least 2,750 pounds, electronic stability control, and strong crashworthiness ratings. It also advises looking for four- or five-star NHTSA ratings alongside good IIHS performance.
Electronic stability control has been required on most passenger vehicles since model year 2012, according to IIHS. For a used vehicle, IIHS specifically calls attention to a good driver-side small-overlap front crash-test rating. These are screening criteria, not a substitute for checking a particular vehicle’s test results and equipment.

Why teen drivers need a separate safety lens
IIHS says teen drivers are about three times as likely as drivers age 20 and older to die in a crash, attributing the elevated risk to immaturity and inexperience. This is a teen-driver comparison, not a statistic for every new driver, and the cited guidance does not identify the statistic’s original study year. IIHS senior research scientist Rebecca Weast said in the May 27, 2026 release that the list is curated for teens because driving carries extra risk for them, while its suggestions can also suit drivers of any age seeking affordability alongside crash protection and avoidance.
Vehicle choice is only one part of risk reduction. NHTSA says novice teen drivers rarely crash while supervised and face their highest crash rates during the first six months of unsupervised driving. It also reports that all 50 states and the District of Columbia use a three-stage graduated driver licensing system that limits high-risk situations. Families can pair a suitable vehicle with supervised practice and the applicable licensing rules in their state.

What to check before buying a used car
- Look up the exact vehicle’s crash-test record. Match the model year and, where relevant, production date to the IIHS result; pay particular attention to the driver-side small-overlap front rating identified in IIHS young-driver guidance.
- Check stability control and vehicle suitability. Confirm the vehicle has electronic stability control, and consider whether its size, age, weight, and performance are appropriate for the driver.
- Check for open recalls. Use the vehicle identification number (VIN) or license plate with the NHTSA recall lookup accessible through its vehicle-safety resources. IIHS says NHTSA advises checking for new recalls about every six months.
