SafeSpeak is a laptop-based English-speaking practice project made by Nishant Kumar for a shy friend who freezes up when speaking with other people. Its creator describes a low-pressure tool for practicing by typing or speaking, with gentle corrections and Hindi, Hinglish, and English support. The project is presented as a solo practice space—not a replacement for conversations with people.

What SafeSpeak does

Kumar describes SafeSpeak as an English practice partner that runs on a laptop. A learner can type or speak, then practice in one of four built-in situations:

  • Phone calls
  • Greetings
  • Asking for directions

The creator says the app accepts Hindi, Hinglish, and English and offers gentle English corrections. Those details come from Kumar’s project description on DEV Community; they are the creator’s account, not an independent evaluation of how well the app teaches.

How the project is built

Kumar lists Gemma 3 1B running through Ollama, Whisper for local speech transcription, Piper for spoken responses, Streamlit, and Python 3.12. These are the implementation details reported in the project post and may change as the code evolves.

The post outlines a short setup sequence: pull the Gemma model with ollama pull gemma3:1b, install the Python requirements, and launch the Streamlit app. Kumar says the project repository includes a README, quick start, and architecture notes. Use the project’s current instructions for installation rather than assuming the post’s summary commands cover every prerequisite.

What “offline” and “private” mean here

Kumar says SafeSpeak continued working in a test with Wi-Fi turned off after setup, and describes its design as having no cloud APIs or telemetry. That is a useful indication of the intended local workflow, but it is not an independent audit of the source code, dependencies, network traffic, or future versions. Anyone handling sensitive conversations should review the code and the behavior of the specific build they install rather than treating the creator’s description as a blanket privacy guarantee.

How SafeSpeak differs from other practice options

The right choice depends on whether a learner wants private solo practice or is ready to speak with other people, as well as their device and language needs.

Option Practice style and device What the source says
SafeSpeak Solo practice on a laptop Kumar describes text and voice practice, local speech tools, and Hindi, Hinglish, and English support. These are creator-reported details in the DEV Community project post.
Koko Solo practice on iPhone Its official site describes on-device speech recognition, conversation features, offline use, and no account required to start. These are vendor statements, not an independent audit.
SpeakFam Language exchange app with social and AI features Its Google Play listing describes voice notes, voice and video calls, AI conversation partners, and reporting and blocking controls. The listing was updated September 3, 2026, and notes that data-safety practices may vary.

SafeSpeak and Koko are described as solo-practice options for different devices. SpeakFam’s human interaction features may help learners ready to talk with others, but they are a different fit for someone whose priority is private practice without social contact.

What is not established

The available project account does not establish how much SafeSpeak improves fluency, pronunciation, confidence, or long-term learning outcomes; no independent outcome study or statistic is cited. It also does not establish compatibility beyond the described laptop setup or provide an independent privacy assessment. Treat the project as a promising practice tool described by its creator, and check the repository for current requirements and code before relying on it.
