The safest default for emergency cash is a savings or money market deposit account held directly at an FDIC-insured bank or an NCUA-insured credit union. A fintech app’s advertised APY, partner-bank logo or polished interface does not by itself prove that your balance has deposit insurance.
Use an insured deposit for money you may need at any time, an insured CD for cash with a known future date, Treasury bills when you are comfortable managing a government security and its maturity, and a government money market mutual fund only when you understand that it is an investment without FDIC insurance.

Start with the insurance distinction
“High-yield” describes the interest rate, not the legal protection around the money. Before comparing APYs, identify whether your balance is a bank deposit, a credit-union share, a Treasury security or a mutual-fund investment.

The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation generally insures up to $250,000 per depositor, per insured bank, per ownership category. Qualifying savings accounts, money market deposit accounts and bank-issued certificates of deposit (CDs) can fall within that coverage. The limit applies to the depositor’s total eligible deposits in the same ownership category at that bank, not separately to every account or app.

A traditional FDIC-insured savings account is designed for easy withdrawals while earning interest. Its rate is usually variable, so the bank can change the APY as market conditions and its pricing change.
NCUA-insured credit-union accounts
At a federally insured credit union, the National Credit Union Administration’s Share Insurance Fund generally provides up to $250,000 of federal share insurance for an account holder. Share savings, share certificates and money market share accounts may qualify, subject to the credit union’s ownership and account rules. You may have to meet membership requirements, and account access can differ from a bank’s.
Fintech balances require a separate check
A fintech application may place customer cash at one or more partner banks through a custodial or sweep arrangement. Coverage depends on the legal entity that holds the funds, the accuracy of its records, the ownership category used and the amount already held at each partner institution. If the app or program bank fails, the claims process can also depend on that structure.
Do not infer insurance from a high APY, an app’s branding or a partner-bank logo. Confirm the institution in the FDIC or NCUA verification tools and read the account agreement to see how funds are titled and where they are held.
Match the account to your cash horizon
The right alternative depends on when you might need the money, how certain the date is and whether a temporary decline in value would disrupt your plan.
Emergency fund: insured deposit first
An emergency fund needs reliable access for an unexpected bill, job loss or medical expense. An FDIC-insured savings account, FDIC-insured money market deposit account or NCUA-insured account is generally the simplest fit. You accept a variable rate in exchange for straightforward withdrawals and insurance within the applicable limit.

Known future date: an insured CD
If you know when the money will be needed, an FDIC-insured CD can provide a fixed term and often a fixed rate. The trade-off is reduced flexibility: withdrawing before maturity may trigger an early-withdrawal penalty, and the proceeds may not be available immediately on the day you request them.
Short-term government cash: Treasury bills
U.S. Treasury bills are short-term U.S. government obligations, not bank deposits. They are not FDIC-insured. You must plan the purchase, settlement and maturity dates, and avoid a forced sale when possible. A Treasury-bill ladder can spread maturities so that part of the cash becomes available regularly instead of all at once.
Brokerage liquidity: government money market mutual funds
A government money market mutual fund invests in high-quality short-term debt and normally offers daily liquidity through a brokerage account. It remains an investment: there is no FDIC deposit insurance, and the yield and value are investment-related. Use it only after accepting that its protections and operations differ from a bank account.
Comparison of the main alternatives
| Option | Protection | Access | Rate or value behavior | Important trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| FDIC-insured savings or money market deposit account | FDIC insurance generally up to $250,000 per depositor at each insured bank within an ownership category | High liquidity through the bank’s stated withdrawal and transfer methods | Variable interest rate | Verify the bank and coverage; rates can reset |
| NCUA-insured credit-union share or money market account | Federal share insurance generally up to $250,000 | High liquidity, subject to membership and institution rules | Usually variable | Membership eligibility and service rules apply |
| FDIC-insured CD or CD ladder | Deposit insurance when issued by an insured bank, within applicable limits | Funds are tied to a fixed term; early withdrawal may be penalized | Often fixed for the term | Less flexibility and maturity-date planning |
| U.S. Treasury bills | U.S. government obligation; not FDIC-insured | Cash is available at maturity; selling earlier can create market and transaction considerations | Return is linked to the security and its maturity | Requires a securities account or purchase process and settlement planning |
| Government money market mutual fund | Investment exposure to high-quality short-term debt; no FDIC insurance | Daily liquidity in a brokerage context | Yield and value are investment-related | Brokerage operations, fund expenses and investment risk |
How to verify a bank or credit union before moving money
- Identify the legal institution. Find the bank or credit union named in the account agreement, not just the consumer-facing app.
- Check the regulator’s directory. Use the FDIC verification tool for banks or the NCUA verification tool for federally insured credit unions. A logo in an advertisement is not a substitute for a directory result.
- Confirm the ownership category. Ask whether the account is individual, joint, trust, retirement or another category. The $250,000 limit is applied by category at each institution.
- Ask how pooled cash is recorded. For a custodial or sweep program, determine whether records identify each customer and how balances are allocated among partner institutions.
- Read the failure procedure. The agreement should explain what happens if the fintech, bank or credit union becomes insolvent, including how you submit a claim and how access may be interrupted.
- Document the arrangement. Save statements, the account agreement, the named institution and the balance assigned to each institution. This makes coverage easier to establish if records must be reconstructed.
Using an FDIC-insured savings or money market deposit account
Why it works for emergencies
These accounts combine deposit insurance, familiar transfers and no maturity date. A savings account is usually the clearest choice when you want a separate reserve with easy access. A bank money market deposit account may add check-writing or other transaction features, but it is still a deposit account only when offered by an insured depository institution under its account terms.
What to monitor
- Coverage concentration: Add all eligible deposits you hold at the same bank in the same ownership category before comparing the total with $250,000.
- Variable APY: A promotional rate can fall, and the account’s future rate is not guaranteed.
- Withdrawal mechanics: Check transfer cutoffs, linked-account delays, ATM availability and any transaction limits before designating the account for an emergency.
- Operational access: Maintain a backup way to reach the bank if an app, password or device is unavailable.
When an FDIC-insured CD or CD ladder is better
A CD is appropriate for money that can remain untouched until a known date. The bank agrees to a maturity term and generally states the interest rate for that term. Because the CD is a deposit, it can receive FDIC insurance when issued by an insured bank and when your total balances remain within the applicable coverage rules.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteSingle CD versus ladder
A single CD is simple but concentrates access on one maturity date. A ladder divides the amount among CDs with different maturity dates. As each CD matures, you can use the proceeds, place them in a liquid insured account or reinvest them at the prevailing term.

- Keep the portion needed for immediate emergencies in an insured savings account rather than locking it up.
- Estimate the amount you can leave untouched and divide it among several maturity dates.
- Confirm each issuing bank’s insurance status and your total deposits in the relevant ownership category.
- Record the maturity date, interest rate, early-withdrawal penalty and renewal instructions for every CD.
- Before a maturity date, decide whether to spend, move or reinvest the proceeds; do not allow automatic renewal to make the money unavailable when you need it.
CD pitfalls
- An early-withdrawal penalty can reduce interest and, depending on the contract, affect principal.
- A higher rate is not useful if the maturity date conflicts with a known cash need.
- Several CDs at one bank still share the bank and ownership-category coverage limit.
How Treasury bills fit a safer cash plan
Treasury bills provide exposure to a short-term U.S. government obligation rather than a deposit account. Their protection is the government’s obligation to pay according to the security’s terms, not FDIC insurance.
Use maturities, not an advertised APY, as the organizing principle
For a Treasury-bill strategy, map each maturity to a future cash need. A ladder can place bills on staggered dates so that a portion matures periodically. Keep a separate insured deposit reserve for expenses that cannot wait for settlement or maturity.
Understand access and sale risk
At maturity, the bill pays according to its terms. Selling before maturity is a securities transaction: market conditions, pricing, settlement timing and any transaction costs can affect the amount and timing of cash. Do not treat a brokerage balance showing a Treasury bill as identical to an instantly withdrawable bank balance.

Money market account versus money market mutual fund
The names are similar but the legal products are different.
Money market deposit account
A bank money market account is a deposit product. At an FDIC-insured bank, qualifying balances are covered within the FDIC limits. At a federally insured credit union, a comparable money market share account may receive NCUA share insurance. The rate is generally variable, and the institution’s transaction rules apply.
Money market mutual fund
A money market mutual fund is a mutual-fund investment. As the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau explains, it is an investment rather than a savings or checking account even when the fund permits check writing. Investor.gov likewise notes that a money market fund has no FDIC insurance because it is not a bank product.

The fund’s portfolio, expenses, liquidity arrangements and market conditions affect its yield and value. Daily redemption availability in a brokerage account is useful, but it does not convert the fund into an insured deposit.

Fees, minimums and tax or operational considerations
Compare the complete arrangement, not only the headline rate.
- Deposits: Check minimum balances, monthly fees, transfer limits, overdraft terms and whether a promotional APY expires.
- CDs: Compare the early-withdrawal penalty, minimum opening amount, renewal policy and maturity notice process.
- Treasury bills: Account for brokerage or purchase fees if applicable, settlement timing and the work required to reinvest maturities.
- Money market funds: Review the fund expense ratio, brokerage charges, redemption procedures and the possibility that yield changes with portfolio conditions.
- All options: Keep records of statements and tax documents and verify the current terms before acting. Rates and account rules change.
A practical decision framework
- Set the required access time. If the money may be needed today or tomorrow, begin with an insured deposit.
- Separate immediate reserves from planned cash. Do not lock the entire emergency fund into CDs or securities merely to pursue a higher rate.
- Choose the protection you actually want. Select FDIC or NCUA insurance for deposits; select Treasury bills for direct government-security exposure; select a money market fund only if investment risk and the lack of FDIC insurance are acceptable.
- Check concentration. Add balances by institution and ownership category so that an attractive rate does not push an account above the relevant insurance limit.
- Test the operating path. Make a small transfer, confirm the expected settlement or withdrawal time and verify that you can access the account without relying on a single device.
- Review on a schedule. Recheck the institution, APY, fees, maturity dates and coverage whenever you add a substantial balance or a promotional period ends.
Common failure modes and fixes
“The app says FDIC insured, so every dollar is covered.”
Fix: Identify the actual insured bank, the ownership category and the amount allocated there. Ask whether balances are spread across partner banks and how that allocation appears on statements.
“My emergency fund is in a CD, but I need it before maturity.”
Fix: Keep a liquid insured reserve outside the CD. If you must withdraw early, read the penalty terms first and compare the cost with other available cash sources.
“The brokerage shows cash, so it must be a bank deposit.”
Fix: Determine whether the balance is a bank sweep deposit, a Treasury security or a money market mutual fund. The protection and access rules differ for each.
“I bought Treasury bills for a bill due before maturity.”
Fix: Match security maturities to spending dates and retain an insured cash buffer. Selling early can introduce pricing and settlement uncertainty.
Best Value
“Two accounts at the same bank each show $250,000 of coverage.”
Fix: Recalculate the total by ownership category. Separate account numbers do not automatically create separate insurance limits.
Examples of sensible allocations
Variable income and uncertain expenses
Keep the core emergency reserve in an FDIC-insured savings account or NCUA-insured share account. The priority is immediate access and verified insurance; a variable rate is a secondary consideration.
Home purchase scheduled for a known month
Hold the amount needed before closing in a liquid insured deposit. Money with a later, reliable date may be divided among insured CDs whose maturities precede the expected payment, provided the penalties and coverage are understood.

Use a government money market mutual fund only for the portion you can treat as an investment and whose daily liquidity is sufficient. Keep money needed for same-day certainty in an insured deposit and coordinate Treasury-bill maturities with planned withdrawals.
Check rates and terms at the time you act
Rates are not permanent. The FDIC’s national-rate and rate-cap table published on August 18, 2025 covers savings accounts, money market accounts and several CD maturities, but it is a dated reference rather than a promise of the rate available when you open an account. Recheck the institution’s current disclosure, the regulator’s insurance status, fees, withdrawal rules and maturity terms immediately before transferring money.
