Safari can keep ordinary browsing data current across your Mac, iPhone, and iPad, while profiles separate selected work and personal data and Private Browsing reduces what Safari saves locally. These features solve different problems. iCloud synchronization is for continuity, profiles are persistent contexts, Private Browsing is a temporary session, and extensions add capabilities but require explicit installation and permission choices.
This guide explains what each feature actually does, how to configure it, what crosses device boundaries, and which privacy expectations are realistic.

What Safari syncs through iCloud
When Safari is enabled in iCloud on devices using the same Apple Account, Apple says the following regular Safari data can stay up to date: bookmarks, Reading List items, history, open tabs, Tab Groups, profiles, selected settings, and whether supported extensions are turned on or off. The exact options and device support depend on the Safari and operating-system versions installed. Apple’s current overview is Keep Safari in sync across your devices with iCloud.
Recommended Free Tools
| Safari item | What synchronization means | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Bookmarks | Bookmarks can appear and update on the other signed-in Apple devices. | Only devices with Safari enabled in iCloud participate. |
| Reading List | Reading List entries follow your iCloud Safari data. | Availability depends on compatible software and the same Apple Account. |
| History | Regular browsing history can be kept current across devices. | Private Browsing activity is excluded from the shared history. |
| Open tabs | Safari can show open regular tabs from your other devices. | Private tabs and private windows are not included. |
| Tab Groups | Regular Tab Groups can be available on your other devices. | Profile-specific Tab Groups remain associated with their profile. |
| Profiles | Profiles can synchronize when Apple’s compatibility requirements are met. | Synchronization does not turn profiles into secure, separate identities. |
| Selected settings | Some Safari settings follow the iCloud Safari service. | Not every setting is guaranteed to replicate between every device. |
| Extension state | The enabled or disabled state of a supported extension can be shared. | The extension package may still need to be installed locally. |
Private pages are deliberately outside the normal continuity model. On Mac, private pages are not put in iCloud open tabs, and a private window is not transferred by Handoff. On iPhone, private tabs do not appear in History or in the other-device tab lists. Thus, seeing regular tabs on another device is expected; seeing a private tab there is not.

How to turn on Safari syncing
Enable the service on every device you want to participate. Use the same Apple Account, keep compatible software installed, and make sure Safari is selected in iCloud settings. Apple’s device-specific labels can change, so use the current controls shown in its iCloud Safari guide.
- Sign in consistently. Check that the Mac, iPhone, and iPad use the same Apple Account. Different accounts create separate iCloud data sets.
- Enable Safari in iCloud. On each device, open the Apple Account iCloud settings and turn on Safari.
- Allow time for propagation. Keep the devices connected to the internet and give Safari time to upload and download changes. A newly opened tab may not appear instantly.
- Check software compatibility. Profiles and extension sharing require Safari versions that support those features. If one device is older, an item may be unavailable there even though syncing is enabled elsewhere.
- Test with ordinary data. Add a non-sensitive bookmark or open a regular tab, then verify it on another device. Do not use a private tab for this test because private content is intentionally excluded.
Safari profiles: persistent separation, not a security boundary
Profiles are designed for ongoing contexts such as work, school, and personal browsing. A profile keeps its own history, cookies, website data, and Tab Groups. A site that is signed in inside one profile can therefore ask you to sign in again in another because the cookie and site-data stores are separate.
Profiles do not isolate every Safari feature. Passwords and AutoFill information saved in iCloud Keychain can remain available across profiles. Treat a profile as an organizational boundary, not as an independent account, sandbox, or protection against someone who can use your unlocked device. Apple explains the Mac behavior in Use profiles in Safari on Mac.

Create and manage a profile on Mac
- Open Safari and choose Safari > Settings.
- Select Profiles.
- Use the add control to create a profile, then give it a recognizable name and choose its visual details.
- Choose the profile when opening a new window or tab so its history, cookies, website data, and Tab Groups stay with that context.
New profiles have extensions turned off by default. An extension can be available to more than one profile, but its use is managed separately in each profile. This prevents an extension enabled for personal browsing from automatically running in a newly created work profile.

Create a profile on iPhone
- Open Settings > Apps > Safari.
- Tap New Profile and follow the prompts to name and configure it.
- Switch profiles from Safari when you want the associated cookies, site data, history, or Tab Groups.
Apple documents the iPhone workflow in Create multiple Safari profiles on iPhone. Profiles can sync between supported devices when they use the same Apple Account and Safari is enabled in iCloud. A profile created on one device may therefore become available on another, but the receiving device still needs a compatible Safari version.
Before deleting a profile
Deleting a profile removes its associated history and website data. Apple’s retention details for favorites or bookmarks vary by device and the exact deletion workflow, so review the Mac or iPhone instructions before confirming. Export or manually record anything you need first; do not assume deleting a profile merely hides it.
Private Browsing on Mac
Private Browsing changes what Safari saves and shares for that session. Apple’s Mac guide states: “When you browse privately, the details of your browsing aren’t saved, and the websites you visit aren’t shared with your other Apple devices.” The full instructions are at Browse privately in Safari on Mac.

- Choose File > New Private Window.
- Browse in that window; close it when the private session is finished.
In a private Mac window, visited pages and AutoFill information are not saved in the usual Safari records. Private pages are not stored in iCloud open tabs, and Handoff does not transfer private windows to another Apple device.

Downloads are the important exception. A file downloaded from a private window remains on the Mac even though Safari omits that download from the private window’s downloads list. Anyone with access to the computer can still find the file through the system’s storage tools.
Private Browsing on iPhone
On iPhone, open Safari, tap the Tabs button, and switch to Private Browsing. Private tabs are not listed in Safari History and do not appear in the tab lists for your other devices. Apple’s current instructions are in Browse the web privately in Safari on iPhone.
On a passcode-protected iPhone, Safari locks private browsing when it is not in use, although Apple notes that the lock may not happen immediately. This protects the open private-tab view from a casual look at the phone; it does not erase files you downloaded or make a website forget a visit.
Extensions that can access browsing data are off by default in iPhone Private Browsing. If a particular extension is essential, check its Safari extension settings and the access choices available for that private session rather than assuming it runs exactly as it does in a regular tab.

Private Browsing is not anonymity, and Private Relay is different
Private Browsing primarily controls Safari’s local record-keeping and cross-device sharing. It does not promise that websites, network operators, employers, schools, or internet providers cannot observe or associate traffic. The cited Apple guides describe what Safari saves and shares; they do not make a blanket anonymity claim.
iCloud Private Relay addresses a different layer. Apple describes it as an optional iCloud+ feature with regional availability limits. It is not required for private tabs, Safari profiles, or ordinary iCloud Safari synchronization. Conversely, enabling Private Relay does not turn a regular Safari window into a Private Browsing session. Choose the feature according to the problem: use Private Browsing to reduce Safari’s local records, and consider Private Relay when you need the separate network-privacy service Apple offers in supported regions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Safari extensions: install deliberately and review access
Extensions add functions such as content controls, productivity tools, or page transformations. Because an extension can potentially access webpage content, installation is also a permission decision. Apple recommends the Mac App Store as the safest and easiest discovery and installation route; Apple reviews extensions distributed there. If Automatic Updates is selected in App Store settings, installed extensions can update automatically. See Get extensions to customize Safari on Mac.
Install and manage extensions on Mac
- In Safari, choose Safari > Safari Extensions to discover an extension.
- Install it through the Mac App Store, then return to Safari.
- Open Safari > Settings > Extensions.
- Turn the extension on or off and review its website-access controls. Restrict access when the extension does not need to read every page.
Install only extensions you recognize and understand. A useful feature is not a reason to grant unrestricted access to sensitive banking, health, workplace, or private pages.
Best Value
Use an extension with profiles
An extension may be installed for Safari yet disabled in a particular profile. New profiles start with extensions off, and the extension’s profile availability is managed separately. Open the profile’s extension settings and enable only the add-ons that fit that context.
Use extensions across Apple devices
Cross-device extension availability requires several conditions: compatible support on the receiving device, the same Apple Account, Safari enabled in iCloud, and the relevant extension-sharing settings. iCloud can synchronize an extension’s installation state (for example, on or off), but that does not guarantee that the extension package is automatically installed on every device. If an extension is missing on an iPhone or iPad, verify that it supports that platform and install it locally when prompted or when the App Store offers it.
Apple’s permission and management details are also covered in Use Safari extensions on your Mac. Availability is not the same as automatic installation, and an extension that works on Mac may have different capabilities or access controls on iPhone or iPad.
Which feature should you use?
| Need | Best fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Continue ordinary browsing on several Apple devices | iCloud Safari sync | Bookmarks, Reading List, regular history, open tabs, Tab Groups, profiles, selected settings, and extension state can follow you. |
| Keep work and personal logins and site data apart over time | Safari profiles | Each profile has separate history, cookies, website data, and Tab Groups. |
| Leave fewer Safari records for a temporary session | Private Browsing | Private pages are excluded from normal history and cross-device tab sharing. |
| Reduce exposure at the network-privacy layer | iCloud Private Relay, where available | It is an optional iCloud+ service, not a replacement for profiles or private tabs. |
| Add a page-level capability | Safari extension | Extensions add functions but may receive webpage access, so permissions should be limited. |
Common problems and fixes
“My bookmark or tab is missing on another device.”
- Confirm both devices use the same Apple Account.
- Check that Safari is enabled in iCloud on each device.
- Make sure the item was created in a regular window, not Private Browsing.
- Check software compatibility and allow time for the iCloud update to complete.
“A profile exists on my Mac but not my iPhone.”
- Verify Safari is enabled in iCloud on both devices.
- Confirm that each device runs a Safari version supporting profiles and synchronization.
- Check that you are looking in Safari’s profile switcher rather than the default profile.
“The extension is on one device but absent on another.”
- Check whether the extension supports the second platform.
- Confirm the same Apple Account, Safari iCloud sync, and extension-sharing settings.
- Install the extension locally if it was not automatically installed.
- Open the device’s Safari extension settings and enable it for the active profile; new profiles leave extensions off.
“A website asks me to sign in again after changing profiles.”
That is expected when the new profile has separate cookies and website data. Sign in within that profile if you want the site to remember the session there. Passwords saved in iCloud Keychain may still be offered because password availability is not isolated in the same way as cookies.
“I downloaded something privately and can still find it.”
Private Browsing changes Safari’s record of the download, not the file’s presence on the Mac. Check the computer’s download folder or other storage locations and remove the file separately if necessary.
Quick Recap
A practical privacy checklist
- Use a profile when you need a durable work, school, or personal context.
- Use a Private window or Private tab for a temporary session that should not enter normal Safari history or shared tab lists.
- Remember that downloads and other files can remain on the device after private browsing.
- Review every extension’s website access and keep unnecessary extensions off, especially in profiles containing sensitive work or financial sessions.
- Use iCloud Safari sync for regular continuity, but do not expect private tabs to appear on another device.
- Consider Private Relay separately if your concern is network privacy and the service is available in your region.
