Safari then adds the Develop menu to its menu bar, where its web-development tools are available.
What “Safari Developer Mode” means on a Mac
When people ask how to enable Safari Developer Mode, they usually mean the setting that reveals Safari’s Develop menu. Apple’s current interface labels that control Show features for web developers; there is not a separate checkbox called Developer Mode.

Turning on the setting exposes Safari’s developer features, including the tools used to inspect and test web pages. Apple describes these tools as a way for web developers to check that sites work with standards-based web browsers. The same Advanced settings area also makes Safari’s Developer and Feature Flags settings available.

The feature is built into Safari. You do not need to download a developer edition, install a plug-in, buy an add-on, or connect a special accessory. The only requirement for this procedure is Safari running on a Mac.

Enable the Develop menu in Safari
- Open Safari on your Mac.
- In the macOS menu bar, choose Safari > Settings. On some older Safari or macOS releases, the window may use the word Preferences instead of Settings; use the Safari application’s settings command if that is what your interface displays.
- Click Advanced in the Settings window.
- Select Show features for web developers.
- Look at Safari’s menu bar. A Develop menu should now appear.
Apple’s instruction is: “If you don’t see the Develop menu in the menu bar, choose Safari > Settings, click Advanced, then select ‘Show features for web developers.’” The checkbox is the key step; simply opening the Advanced pane does not enable the menu until the option is selected.
Confirm that developer features are enabled
Check for the Develop menu
With Safari active, inspect the menu bar at the top of the screen. The new Develop item should sit among Safari’s other menus. Its presence confirms that the web-developer features are enabled for the current Safari installation and user account.
Check the Advanced setting
If you are unsure whether the change was saved, return to Safari > Settings > Advanced. The Show features for web developers checkbox should remain selected. Selecting it is what exposes the Develop menu; clearing it hides that menu again.
Open the tools you need
Choose the relevant command from Develop to use Safari’s developer tools. The exact commands and their arrangement can vary with the Safari and macOS release, but the menu is the entry point for the tools. If your goal is to inspect a page, use the Web Inspector command shown in your version of Safari. If you are testing a site, review the other developer commands available in that menu.

Because Apple changes labels and tool organization over time, follow the wording displayed in your own Develop menu rather than looking for a command whose name belongs to a different release.
Where to find Web Inspector after enabling the menu
Web Inspector is one of the developer tools exposed through the Develop menu. First enable Show features for web developers as described above, then open Develop and select the Web Inspector option presented by your Safari version.
If Web Inspector is not visible, do not assume that Safari needs a separate download or extension. Recheck that the Advanced checkbox is selected and that Safari—not another application—is the active app when you open the menu. The available command names can differ across Safari releases and localized interfaces.

Troubleshoot a missing Develop menu
1. Verify the exact checkbox
Go to Safari > Settings > Advanced and look specifically for Show features for web developers. The current Apple wording is important: Safari does not require a control labeled “Developer Mode.” If the option is unchecked, select it.

2. Make sure Safari is the active application
The macOS menu bar belongs to whichever application is in the foreground. Click a Safari window, then look at the menu bar again. You will not see Safari’s Develop menu while another application owns the menu bar.
3. Check the Advanced pane again after reopening Settings
Close the Settings window, reopen it from Safari > Settings, and return to Advanced. Confirm that the selection persisted. If it is no longer selected, enable it again and then check the menu bar.
4. Account for translated labels
On a localized version of macOS, the menu and checkbox may be translated. Look in Safari’s Advanced settings for the option corresponding to showing features for web developers. The language changes the wording, not the location of the control: it remains in Safari’s Advanced settings.
5. Distinguish the menu from a tool window
Enabling the feature reveals the Develop menu. It does not necessarily open a tool window automatically. If you expect Web Inspector or another panel to appear immediately after checking the box, open the Develop menu and choose the tool you need.

Settings, menu, and tools: how they relate
| Item | Where you find it | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Show features for web developers | Safari > Settings > Advanced | Enables Safari’s web-development features and reveals the Develop menu. |
| Develop menu | Safari’s macOS menu bar after the checkbox is enabled | Provides access to Safari’s developer commands and tools. |
| Web Inspector | From the Develop menu, using the command shown in your Safari version | Opens Safari’s page-inspection tool for examining a website while you work. |
| Developer and Feature Flags settings | Safari’s Advanced settings after web-developer features are enabled | Provides the additional settings Apple exposes for development and feature testing. |
The checkbox is the switch that connects the other two areas. If it is off, the Develop menu is hidden; if it is on, the menu and the associated developer settings become available.
Safari and macOS version differences
The procedure is based on Apple’s current wording, but Safari’s interface is tied to the Safari and macOS release installed on your Mac. You may notice one of these differences:
- Settings versus Preferences: Some older releases use Safari > Preferences. Open the application’s settings window and find its Advanced pane.
- Different menu arrangement: The Develop menu can contain a different order or set of commands in another release. Use the command labels shown on your Mac.
- Translated labels: A localized system translates Safari, Settings, Advanced, Develop, and the web-developer option. The control remains in Advanced settings.
- Additional Advanced controls: Apple’s documentation notes that enabling the feature also exposes Developer and Feature Flags settings. Their exact presentation can change with the installed release.
These differences do not change the core path: open Safari’s settings, select the web-developer option in Advanced, and then use the Develop menu.

Common questions about enabling Safari Developer Mode
Is “Developer Mode” the name of a Safari setting?
No. “Developer Mode” is a common description, but Apple’s current control is Show features for web developers. Select that checkbox in Safari’s Advanced settings to reveal the Develop menu.
Do I need a separate version of Safari?
No. Apple’s procedure uses the Safari app already installed on the Mac. The developer features are built in and are enabled from Settings.
Do I need to pay or install a plug-in?
No. The documented procedure calls for no purchase, download, plug-in, or physical accessory. The Advanced checkbox controls access to the built-in features.
Why can’t I see the Develop menu after selecting the option?
First confirm that the checkbox is still selected at Safari > Settings > Advanced. Then click a Safari window so Safari owns the macOS menu bar. If the interface is translated, look for the equivalent wording in the Advanced pane. Finally, remember that enabling the feature reveals a menu; it does not automatically open Web Inspector.
Will changing the Mac’s language remove the feature?
No. Localization changes the labels but not the location of the control. Look in Safari’s Advanced settings for the translated option that shows web-developer features.
A practical checklist
- Safari is open and is the active application.
- You chose Safari > Settings (or the older Preferences command).
- You opened Advanced.
- Show features for web developers is selected.
- The Develop menu appears in Safari’s menu bar.
- You opened the desired developer tool from that menu.
If every item is true, Safari’s developer features are enabled and ready to use. If the checklist stops at the fourth item, revisit the Advanced pane; if it stops at the fifth, verify that Safari is the foreground application and account for translated labels.
