No public evidence names one winner among Sabre, Amadeus and Travelport for travel portals. The right GDS depends on the markets you sell in, the airlines and other products you must sell, whether you need traditional GDS content, NDC content or both, how much post-booking servicing you handle, and the contract you can negotiate. What the vendors’ own documentation does show is how each one packages its APIs and how you get access. This article sets that out, then gives you a method for choosing with your own test cases.
What the public documentation does and does not tell you
All three vendors publish technical material about their own products. None of it is an independent comparison. The material does not give matched figures for inventory by market, per-transaction cost, or performance. Any article that ranks the three on those points, this one included, would be guessing. What you can compare today is the integration model, the access route and the way each vendor describes GDS versus NDC content.

The three providers as they describe themselves
Sabre
Sabre’s developer hub says its Travel Solution APIs let you connect to the Sabre platform to build B2C or B2B travel applications. Its listed use cases include corporate travel portals, web-based booking engines, cruise booking engines and rental-car reservation systems. The hub also lists current API collections and quickstart material. That confirms Sabre targets portal and booking-engine builders. It does not show that a given airline’s content is available to you, that you will qualify for production access, or how Sabre compares on cost or quality. Confirm the access path, API versions and production eligibility with Sabre directly.

Amadeus’s developer site now carries a notice that the Amadeus for Developers Self-Service portal “has been decommissioned on July 17th” and that the site is for the Amadeus Enterprise API Portal only. The notice as displayed gives no year, so treat any third-party claim about an exact closure date with caution. The portal says you can request access to more than 100 Enterprise APIs and test them in an enterprise sandbox. That count is Amadeus’s own catalog figure. It says nothing about how much of it is relevant to your portal.

- IMMERSIVE TRAVEL THEME: A thematic board game for players who enjoy travel planning, European destinations, route-building decisions, exploration, and medium-weight strategy.
The practical consequence is that a new portal should not plan its prototype around Amadeus’s old self-service route. Start from the Enterprise API request process.
Amadeus also markets Amadeus Web Services to travel sellers who want custom applications. It describes SOAP, XML or HTTP integration and sends prospects to contact sales. The product page claims a “99.5% guaranteed server accessibility rate” and “100 billion transactions” processed every year. Both are Amadeus’s own statements. They measure different things and have no stated methodology, and neither is comparable with anything Sabre or Travelport publishes. Ask for the actual service-level agreement and its measurement period before treating the 99.5% figure as a commitment.
Travelport
Travelport documents two distinct API approaches, and they should not be treated as one product.

- Universal API: Travelport describes a single connection that can aggregate its GDS content with low-cost carriers, high-speed rail, merchandising and non-GDS hotel content. Its standards section lists SOAP 1.1, XML 1.0, HTTP 1.1 and TLS 1.2. The overview states that “the Universal API schema is normalized so that it can be used across any of the content providers.” It also says provider-specific functionality still differs, and your application has to handle those differences. Normalization reduces your parsing work but does not remove carrier-specific behavior.
- TripServices: These are REST/JSON APIs. The getting-started page offers trial credentials and says production and pre-production credentials are supplied at provisioning. It documents OAuth 2.0 authentication, with a fresh token required every 24 hours. Flight capabilities are organized into search, pricing and fare rules, booking, seats, ancillaries and ticketing. Check current versions and access requirements before you commit to an architecture.

“Not stated” means the vendor’s public documentation reviewed here did not give the figure. It does not mean the capability is missing.
GDS content versus NDC content
Travelport defines a GDS as an aggregation and distribution system for travel content such as air, hotel and car rental. It contrasts that with NDC, a way for airlines to distribute content directly to online travel agencies. Its documentation says TripServices supports both, but airline-specific processes cause differences, and some functionality exists for only one distribution method. NDC access requires provisioning with Travelport and registration with the NDC airline. NDC content is fulfilled by the airline, while GDS content is fulfilled through the GDS in the workflows Travelport describes.
That is Travelport’s documentation, and you should not assume Sabre and Amadeus work identically. Ask each vendor the same questions:

- Which of your target airlines are available as GDS content, which as NDC, and which as both?
- Does each carrier require its own registration or agreement, and how long does that take?
- For NDC bookings, who handles changes, refunds and disruption: the airline, the vendor, or your own support team?
- Which functions, such as seats, ancillaries or exchanges, work for one channel but not the other?

List the countries, currencies, languages and regulatory contexts you sell in. Ask each vendor for written confirmation of content and booking availability for those points of sale. Do not accept a general claim of global reach.
2. Supplier and product coverage
List the airlines, hotel sources, car, rail and ancillary inventory you actually need. Confirm each one by supplier and by market. A portal whose revenue depends on three airlines should care far more about those three than about any catalog size.

3. Distribution type
Decide where traditional GDS content is enough and where NDC or direct connections matter. Check carrier-specific eligibility, ticketing, servicing and disruption handling.
4. The full booking lifecycle
A search result does not prove a sellable offer or a servable booking. Test price confirmation, booking, payment and ticketing, retrieval, changes, cancellations, seats, ancillaries and customer support, including the failure cases. Travelport’s documented TripServices flow, for example, runs through search, optional pricing, booking workbench steps, ticketing, and optional seats and ancillaries. Map each vendor’s equivalent flow and note who owns each step when something goes wrong.

Compare:
- REST/JSON versus SOAP/XML, where the vendor offers both
- Authentication and credential lifecycle (for example, Travelport’s 24-hour OAuth token)
- Schemas and how much carrier-specific logic your code must handle
- Sandbox quality, API versioning and deprecation policy
- Observability, error handling, documentation and support responsiveness
A newer interface does not automatically lower total integration cost. If your team already runs SOAP integrations reliably, a REST rewrite may not pay for itself.

6. Commercial and operational terms
No public documentation reviewed here gives comparable current prices. Get written proposals that cover setup fees, transaction or segment fees, minimum commitments, content or incentive terms, support, service levels, implementation help and termination. Put the vendor’s reliability claims, such as Amadeus’s 99.5% figure, into the contract if they matter to you.
7. Migration and resilience
Work out how bookings, traveler profiles, ticket servicing and reconciliation would behave if you migrated or if a provider had an outage. Decide whether you need one provider or a second one as a fallback. If you may add a second vendor, keep your own internal booking model separate from any vendor’s schema, so that a switch means replacing one adapter.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Run the same proof of concept with each vendor
- Pick a fixed set of test cases: your top routes, the airlines you must carry, adult, child and infant passengers, a restrictive and a flexible fare, and at least one change and one cancellation.
- Request test access: the Enterprise API Portal for Amadeus, the developer hub for Sabre, and trial credentials or provisioning for Travelport.
- Run every case in each provider’s authorized test environment, from search through ticketing and servicing.
- Record results with timestamps, along with errors, missing functions and workarounds. Live content, NDC support and APIs all change.
- Ask each vendor which results would differ in production, and for which carriers.
- Weigh the scores against the commercial proposals, not before them.
Be honest in your internal records about what was actually run versus what the vendor said would work.
Choosing an integration partner
If you bring in an implementation firm, judge it on the same evidence: authorization with the specific provider you chose, workflows it has delivered in production (not only search), servicing and ticketing expertise, maintenance scope after launch, references, and contract terms. A partner that is strong on one vendor’s APIs is not automatically strong on another’s.
Verdict
Pick the vendor whose content, access terms and servicing workflows hold up in your own test cases for your own markets. Do not pick on brand size or on catalog and uptime claims. Use the vendors’ documentation to shortlist, and use a like-for-like proof of concept plus written commercial terms to decide.
