For a Ryzen 9 7900X, start with an AM5 motherboard and choose the chipset, expansion, and connectivity that match your build. AMD lists X670E, X670, B650E, B650, X870E, X870, B840, and B850 as supported chipsets, so an X670E board is one option—not a requirement. The ASUS TUF GAMING X670E-PLUS WIFI and MSI X670E GAMING PLUS WIFI are two concrete X670E candidates, but available specifications do not establish that either delivers higher gaming performance.
What motherboard should you get for a Ryzen 9 7900X?
Get a motherboard with an AM5 socket, then select a chipset and board layout based on the ports, storage, networking, and expansion you will use. AMD lists eight supported chipset families for the 7900X; the full list and platform details are on its Socket AM5 chipset overview.

The 7900X is a 12-core, 24-thread processor with a maximum boost clock of up to 5.6 GHz and a default TDP of 170 W, according to AMD’s product specifications. Those are CPU specifications, not evidence that a particular motherboard will raise game frame rates. No controlled, independent gaming comparison between the board examples below is established here, so choose on compatibility and features rather than an FPS ranking.

| Board | What official documentation establishes | What to verify before buying |
|---|---|---|
| ASUS TUF GAMING X670E-PLUS WIFI | ASUS includes it in its X670 series specifications as an AM5 X670E model. | Check the current board revision’s CPU/BIOS support, memory validation list, slot and lane-sharing details, storage and USB connections, networking, dimensions, troubleshooting features, and local price. |
| MSI X670E GAMING PLUS WIFI | MSI’s datasheet identifies it as a Socket AM5 board. | Check the current board revision’s CPU/BIOS support, memory validation list, slot and lane-sharing details, storage and USB connections, networking, dimensions, troubleshooting features, and local price. |

How to choose the right AM5 board
Choose the chipset for your expansion needs
X670E is compatible, but AMD also lists B650 and B650E, as well as X670 and newer X870E, X870, B840, and B850 options. Decide how many graphics, storage, and add-in-card connections you need, then check the exact board manual for PCIe generations, available slots, and lane sharing. A chipset name alone does not tell you whether a specific board has the right layout for your build.
Rank #2
- The best for creators meets the best for gamers, can deliver ultra-fast 100+ FPS performance in the world's most popular games
- 12 Cores and 24 processing threads, based on AMD "Zen 4" architecture
- 5.6 GHz Max Boost, unlocked for overclocking, 76 MB cache, DDR5-5200 support
- AMD AM5 Socket: Supports AMD Ryzen 7000 Series Processors
- DDR5 Compatible: 4*DIMMs with AMD EXPO & Intel XMP Memory Module Support
Check memory support against the exact board
The 7900X supports DDR5 in two memory channels. AMD lists DDR5-5200 for its two-DIMM configurations and DDR5-3600 for its four-DIMM configurations. These figures describe AMD’s listed configurations, not a guarantee that every kit will run at those speeds; memory kit, motherboard support, and BIOS all matter. Before purchase, consult the board’s validated memory list and confirm the kit and configuration you intend to use.

Match storage and I/O to the devices you own
Count the M.2 drives, SATA devices, rear USB connections, and internal USB headers your build requires. Then verify the exact board specification and manual, including whether installing one device disables or shares a slot or port. The cited summaries do not establish a complete port-by-port comparison between the ASUS and MSI examples.

- DDR5 Compatible: 4*DIMMs with AMD EXPO & Intel XMP Memory Module Support
- Commanding Power Design: Twin 14+2+1 Phases with 70A Power Stage Digital VRM Solution, 8-Layer 2X Copper PCB
- Cutting-Edge Thermal Design: 6mm Heatpipe, Fully Covered MOSFET Heatsinks, M.2 Thermal Guard, PCIe Ultra Durable Armor
- Next Gen Connectivity: PCIe 5.0, PCIe 5.0 NVMe x4 M.2, Front and rear USB-C
Check networking and physical fit
Confirm the board’s Ethernet and Wi-Fi specifications against your network needs, and make sure its form factor fits your case. Do not assume that two X670E boards have identical network generations, dimensions, or expansion arrangements; verify the exact model details in current manufacturer specifications.
Consider setup and troubleshooting features
For a new build, useful differences can include BIOS flashback, diagnostic indicators, fan headers, and the board’s thermal design. Verify these on the exact model and revision. They can affect setup convenience and component planning, but they are not proof of higher gaming frame rates.
Rank #4
- AMD Socket AM5: Supports AMD Ryzen 9000 / Ryzen 8000 / Ryzen 7000 Series Processors
- DDR5 Compatible: 4*DIMMs
- Power Design: 14+2+2
- Thermals: VRM and M.2 Thermal Guard
- Connectivity: PCIe 5.0, 3x M.2 Slots, USB-C, Sensor Panel Link
Plan for cooling and memory alongside the board
The boxed Ryzen 9 7900X does not include a thermal solution. AMD states, “Liquid cooler recommended for optimal performance.” That is AMD’s guidance; it does not establish that a specific cooler is necessary for every workload or setup. Choose a cooler appropriate to your case and intended use, and check the case and motherboard clearance requirements.
AMD lists a maximum operating temperature (Tjmax) of 95°C for the processor. This is a stated processor limit, not a recommended temperature target for every operating condition.
