1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor a gaming-first PC, choose the Ryzen 7 9800X3D if its price fits your budget. In TechSpot’s 2024 test suite, it averaged 30% higher gaming performance than the Ryzen 7 9700X, though the gap varied by game and system. For productivity, there is no clear winner established here: compare the processors in your actual applications and check current local prices before deciding.
How much faster is the 9800X3D in games?
TechSpot measured a 30% average gaming-performance lead for the Ryzen 7 9800X3D over the Ryzen 7 9700X across its 2024 review suite. That is a result from one tested suite, not a promise of the same FPS increase in every game or PC. The individual results illustrate why the average needs context:

These figures describe TechSpot’s tests; results can differ with a different GPU, resolution, game version, settings, or system configuration. A CPU difference is most likely to matter when the processor is limiting performance—for example, when targeting high frame rates. If the graphics card is the limit, changing CPUs may produce a smaller difference. Read the full TechSpot Ryzen 7 9800X3D review for test conditions and results.
Which is better for productivity?
The available comparison does not establish a productivity-performance winner. Both are Zen 5 desktop processors with 8 cores and 16 threads, but that alone does not show how they compare in a particular workload. Rendering, compiling, encoding, and other applications can behave differently; use benchmarks for the applications you actually run before paying extra for one CPU on productivity grounds.
#1 Best Overall
- The world’s fastest gaming processor, built on AMD ‘Zen5’ technology and Next Gen 3D V-Cache.
- 8 cores and 16 threads, delivering +~16% IPC uplift and great power efficiency
- 96MB L3 cache with better thermal performance vs. previous gen and allowing higher clock speeds, up to 5.2GHz
- Drop-in ready for proven Socket AM5 infrastructure
- Cooler not included
The 9700X has a lower listed default TDP, which may suit a build prioritizing lower rated power. TDP is a product specification, not a direct measurement of electricity use or a guarantee of cooler operation under every workload. AMD recommends a premium air cooler for optimal 9700X performance. Neither CPU includes a thermal solution according to AMD’s product listings, so include a compatible cooler in the system budget.
Specification differences that matter
| Specification | Ryzen 7 9800X3D | Ryzen 7 9700X |
|---|---|---|
| Architecture | Zen 5 (AMD) | Zen 5 (AMD) |
| Cores / threads | 8 / 16 (AMD) | 8 / 16 (AMD) |
| Maximum boost clock | Up to 5.2 GHz (AMD) | Up to 5.5 GHz (AMD) |
| Base clock | 4.7 GHz (AMD) | 3.8 GHz (AMD) |
| L3 cache | 96 MB (AMD) | 32 MB (AMD) |
| Default TDP | 120 W (AMD) | 65 W (AMD) |
The 9700X’s higher listed boost clock does not by itself make it the faster gaming CPU: TechSpot’s tested suite favored the 9800X3D overall. The specifications explain that the chips differ in cache, clocks, and rated power, but they cannot substitute for workload-specific testing. See AMD’s Ryzen 7 9700X specifications for its product details.

Price and value: check your market before buying
There is not enough comparable, current pricing here to declare either CPU the better value. AMD’s US store listing showed the 9800X3D at $479 and out of stock when accessed on October 4, 2026; that is a dated US store snapshot, not a general street price or a live price guarantee. A reliable current 9700X price for the reader’s market was not established. Check local prices for both CPUs, plus cooler cost, before calculating cost per frame or choosing on price alone. The AMD US Store 9800X3D listing may show a different price or availability now.

Motherboard and cooling checks before you buy
Both processors use the AM5 platform, but socket compatibility is not the only check. AMD lists AM5 and supported chipsets for the 9700X, including A620, B650/B650E, X670/X670E, X870/X870E, B840, and B850. Verify the exact motherboard’s CPU support list and required BIOS version for whichever processor you choose; do not assume that every AM5 board will work without an update. Consult the board maker’s support page for its specific instructions.

AMD’s product listings say neither processor includes a thermal solution. For the 9700X, AMD recommends a premium air cooler for optimal performance. Choose a cooler that fits the CPU, motherboard, and case, and account for the cooling demands of your own workloads; no specific cooler model is established here.

- Choose the 9800X3D when gaming is the priority, you want the stronger result from the cited game suite, and the price and cooling requirements work for your build.
- Consider the 9700X when its lower listed 65 W default TDP is a better fit for your build or its live local price is more attractive—and your workload-specific performance needs support that choice.
- For a mixed gaming and productivity PC, weigh the games and applications you use most. The gaming evidence favors the 9800X3D, but the evidence here does not settle productivity performance or current value.
AMD’s October 31, 2024 launch release said the 9800X3D delivered approximately 8% average FPS uplift over the 7800X3D in AMD’s own testing. That is a manufacturer-reported comparison with a different processor, not a result for the 9700X matchup. The release also included a promotional statement from AMD senior vice president and general manager of Computing and Graphics Jack Huynh; it is AMD’s launch messaging, not an independent performance assessment. See the October 31, 2024 AMD launch release.
