Short answer: The Ryzen 5 9600X is the better-value choice for most new gaming PCs, while the Ryzen 7 9700X earns its premium when eight cores improve your work in rendering, encoding, compiling or other heavily threaded tasks. Both are 65 W Zen 5 processors for AM5 and DDR5, so neither needs to be treated as a high-power desktop chip.
Ryzen 5 9600X and Ryzen 7 9700X specifications
| Specification | Ryzen 5 9600X | Ryzen 7 9700X |
|---|---|---|
| Architecture | AMD Zen 5 | AMD Zen 5 |
| Cores / threads | 6 / 12 | 8 / 16 |
| Maximum boost clock | Up to 5.4 GHz | Up to 5.5 GHz |
| Total cache | 38 MB | 40 MB |
| Rated TDP | 65 W | 65 W |
| Socket and memory | AM5, DDR5 | AM5, DDR5 |
The 9700X adds two cores and four threads, but its rated TDP is the same as the 9600X. TDP is a thermal-design rating, not a complete measurement of wall power, temperatures or energy used over time. The available review material does not provide independent review-wide temperature or watt-hour totals.

Gaming performance: the 9600X is the value pick
Tom’s Hardware tested with a GeForce RTX 4090 at 1080p to expose CPU differences. Its August 14, 2024 retest replaced earlier gaming data after Intel microcode and power-limit changes; those changes affect the Intel comparison, not AMD’s Zen 5 architecture.
| Processor | Review price | Gaming result in Tom’s 1080p retest |
|---|---|---|
| Ryzen 5 9600X | $280 | 4% behind the $300 Core i5-14600K and 12% ahead of the Ryzen 5 7600X at stock settings |
| Ryzen 7 9700X | $360 | 8% behind the $400 Core i7-14700K and 12% ahead of the Ryzen 7 7700X at stock settings |
Those are controlled 1080p results, not a promise of the same gap in every game. A slower graphics card or a higher resolution usually makes the GPU the limiting component, reducing the visible difference between these CPUs. With a discrete GPU, the 9600X therefore delivers the most compelling balance of frame-rate potential and purchase price for a mainstream AM5 build.
#1 Best Overall
- This dominant gaming processor can deliver fast 100+ FPS performance in the world's most popular games
- 8 Cores and 16 processing threads, based on AMD "Zen 5" architecture
- 5.5 GHz Max Boost, unlocked for overclocking, 40 MB cache, DDR5-5600 support
- For the state-of-the-art Socket AM5 platform, can support PCIe 5.0 on select motherboards
- Cooler not included
What PBO changes
Tom’s Hardware measured an additional 8% for the 9600X with Precision Boost Overdrive (PBO) and DDR5-6000 with EXPO, and an additional 8% for the 9700X with PBO. These are not stock results: PBO changes boost behavior, memory configuration and power behavior. Keep that distinction in mind when comparing reviews or planning cooling.
Productivity and threaded workloads
The two extra cores make the 9700X the more appropriate processor for sustained parallel work. HotHardware measured about 482 GOp/s of arithmetic throughput and 3.42 Gpix/s multimedia throughput on the 9700X, versus more than 342 GOp/s and 2.63 Gpix/s on the 9600X. The same suite included SANDRA, AIDA, Geekbench, PCMark 10 Applications, Crossmark, browser tests and 7-Zip; the 9700X generally led in the multi-threaded portions.
Rank #2
- The world’s fastest gaming processor, built on AMD ‘Zen5’ technology and Next Gen 3D V-Cache.
- 8 cores and 16 threads, delivering +~16% IPC uplift and great power efficiency
- 96MB L3 cache with better thermal performance vs. previous gen and allowing higher clock speeds, up to 5.2GHz
- Drop-in ready for proven Socket AM5 infrastructure
- Cooler not included
Both chips showed strong single-thread performance. In HotHardware’s Crossmark result, the 9700X edged past the Core i5-14600K, while the 9600X outran the Ryzen 7 7800X3D in that particular test. A benchmark result is workload-specific, so it should not be read as a universal gaming or application ranking.
- Choose the 9700X for regular rendering, video encoding, software compilation, compression or other jobs that can keep eight cores busy.
- Choose the 9600X when gaming is primary and heavier work is occasional, since six Zen 5 cores still provide strong single-thread and general desktop performance.
Power, noise and cooling expectations
AMD rates both processors at 65 W, which is a useful efficiency signal and allows a sensible AM5 air-cooling build. It does not establish identical temperatures or noise: cooler quality, fan curves, case airflow, motherboard limits and PBO settings all matter. The review data supplied here does not include a standardized, review-wide temperature or energy comparison, so claims that one chip runs a specific number of degrees cooler would be unjustified.

- This dominant gaming processor can deliver fast 100+ FPS performance in the world's most popular games
- 8 Cores and 16 processing threads, based on AMD "Zen 4" architecture
- 5.4 GHz Max Boost, unlocked for overclocking, 80 MB cache, DDR5-5200 support
- For the state-of-the-art Socket AM5 platform, can support PCIe 5.0 on select 600 Series motherboards
- Cooler not included
At stock settings, either CPU can suit a quiet system with a competent tower air cooler. If you enable PBO, use DDR5-6000 EXPO, or apply motherboard limits that permit higher sustained boost, expect power and cooling requirements to change from the 65 W stock design target.
AM5 motherboard and DDR5 requirements
- Use an AM5 motherboard. Both processors require AMD’s AM5 platform; an AM4 board cannot accept either chip.
- Install DDR5 memory. DDR4 is not compatible. Tom’s Hardware used DDR5-5600 for its default tests and DDR5-6000 with PBO and EXPO.
- Check BIOS support before buying. Confirm that the exact motherboard has firmware support for Ryzen 9000, particularly if the board has been sitting in older stock.
- Match memory tuning to your goal. Keep DDR5-5600 as the stock-review reference, or use a validated DDR5-6000 kit and EXPO when you deliberately enable PBO.
- Budget for the platform. Compare the CPU, AM5 motherboard and DDR5 kit together; a cheaper processor can lose its value advantage if the board or memory choice costs substantially more.
HotHardware reported roughly 52 GB/s aggregate memory bandwidth and about 63 ns latency with its G.SKILL kit. Those figures describe that test system, not a guaranteed result for every DDR5 kit or motherboard.

Which processor should you buy?
Buy the Ryzen 5 9600X when
- Your priority is gaming with a discrete graphics card.
- You want Zen 5 performance while keeping the CPU portion of an AM5 build under control.
- Your demanding workloads are intermittent rather than continuously multi-threaded.
- You are willing to use PBO and DDR5-6000 only as an optional tuning step, not as a stock-performance assumption.
Buy the Ryzen 7 9700X when
- You regularly render, encode, compile or run other workloads that scale across eight cores.
- You want more thread capacity without moving beyond AMD’s 65 W-rated desktop class.
- The current street-price difference is justified by the time saved in your applications.
When neither is the obvious answer
If you already own an AM5 processor, first compare the measured gain in your actual games or applications with the cost of replacing it. Likewise, at 1440p or 4K with a mid-range GPU, CPU differences may be too small to justify a platform purchase based on benchmark percentages alone. Current retail pricing, motherboard cost and your graphics card should decide the final value calculation.
Verdict
The Ryzen 5 9600X is the standout mainstream option: it combines efficient 65 W operation, strong single-thread results and competitive 1080p gaming performance at the lower reviewed price. The Ryzen 7 9700X is the better specialist choice for sustained threaded productivity, where its eight cores provide a clear hardware advantage. Both are credible Zen 5 foundations for a new AM5/DDR5 system, but the 9700X is not automatically faster in every game and PBO results should never be confused with stock behavior.
