Ryobi’s 18V battery system dates to 1996, and the company says its later switch to lithium-ion kept the platform compatible. The tools changed color along the way, too: Ryobi says it moved from navy blue to “hyper green” in 2008. I’m glad the batteries stayed in the family. I’m still not sold on the green.
Ryobi’s 18V platform began with a Ni-Cd drill
Ryobi dates the launch of its 18V battery system to 1996, when its first cordless drill used a nickel-cadmium (Ni-Cd) battery. The company’s US ONE+ timeline says it introduced lithium-ion technology in 2007 while maintaining compatibility with the ONE+ platform.

That continuity is the useful part of the story: a battery platform can outlast a particular battery chemistry. Ryobi’s history describes the change as an evolution within ONE+, rather than a complete break with the system. Compatibility is Ryobi’s claim, however—not a guarantee that every battery and tool combination across every generation has been independently verified here. Check the product’s own compatibility details before buying a replacement or adding a tool.

Ryobi says it chose green to stand out
The battery story and the color story are separate decisions. On its UK anniversary page, Ryobi dates its move from navy blue to “hyper green” tools to 2008, saying the change was intended to “stand-out from competition.” That is the company’s explanation for the color, not an independent finding about how shoppers responded.

The result is a platform that may be convenient to extend and hard to mistake for anything else. Personally, I’ll take the battery continuity; the green remains a matter of taste.
ONE+ scale depends on which market you’re looking at
Ryobi presents ONE+ as a wide-ranging system, but its published counts are market-specific and should not be combined into one global total.

These are current claims on different regional pages, with different wording and scope—not a like-for-like comparison or a single worldwide catalogue count. Ryobi’s UK anniversary page also says that 100 million+ batteries have been sold worldwide since 1996. It does not give a distinct measurement date for that total, so it should be read as the company’s stated milestone rather than a figure confirmed as reached in a particular year.

Ryobi’s timeline puts the 18V system’s launch in 1996; its UK page marks 30 years of ONE+ compatibility in the 2026 anniversary context. For anyone already invested in the platform, the appeal is straightforward: Ryobi says its lithium-ion era continued the ONE+ system rather than replacing it. Whether the tool color is a bonus or an eyesore is entirely up to the person holding it.
