Ryobi’s 40V and 36V labels belong to different regional product ranges in the official pages examined. Ryobi’s US catalog and product pages describe a 40V outdoor-tool system, while Ryobi Australia lists 36V batteries for its garden tools. The pages confirm compatibility within each labeled platform, but they do not confirm that a 36V battery can replace a 40V battery, or that the two ranges use identical electrical, connector, or control designs. Treat them as separate systems unless the exact tool and battery documentation for your region says otherwise.
The short answer: 40V and 36V are not proven interchangeable
Ryobi uses the 40V name in its United States materials and the 36V name in its Australian garden-tool materials. That regional naming difference is real, but it is not evidence that the batteries are electrically equivalent or safe to swap. Ryobi’s US 4Ah product page says, “RYOBI 40V batteries are compatible with any RYOBI 40V product.” Ryobi Australia’s 36V HP 8Ah page instead says the battery is compatible with Ryobi 36V garden tools “with a battery slot large enough to accept this battery design.” Those are platform-specific statements, not a cross-region interchangeability promise.

If you own a 40V tool, buy a battery identified for that tool’s 40V platform and region. If you own an Australian 36V garden tool, use the 36V battery and charger information supplied for that Australian or New Zealand range. Do not insert one into the other based only on the number printed on the label.

United States: the 40V range
Ryobi’s US battery catalog identifies a 40V product family. The catalog includes 4Ah, 6Ah, 8Ah and other 40V options, and Ryobi describes the 40V system as containing “over 85” products. That count is Ryobi’s own catalog description, not an independently audited total. The US product pages reviewed use 40V consistently for the batteries and tools in this family.

- 【Battery Specification】Voltage: 40V | Capacity: 7500mAh, Replacement for Ryobi 40V Battery
The US 40V 4Ah High Performance EDGE Battery is model OP40406TA. The 40V 8Ah High Performance EDGE Battery is model OP40806TA. Ryobi’s product information for the 4Ah battery states that 40V batteries are compatible with any Ryobi 40V product. Confirm the exact model and current listing before ordering because a battery’s physical design and included accessories can vary.
Official US references: Ryobi US batteries and chargers catalog, 40V 4Ah High Performance EDGE Battery, and 40V 8Ah High Performance EDGE Battery.
Australia and New Zealand: the 36V garden-tool range
Ryobi Australia presents a 36V battery family for outdoor power tools. Its catalog lists a 36V 4Ah battery and a 36V HP 8Ah battery. The Australian 8Ah page limits compatibility to Ryobi 36V garden tools whose battery slot is large enough for that design. That wording matters: even within a named platform, the tool’s slot and the battery’s physical form must match.
Ryobi Australia’s support catalog also lists an R36SK4 36V 4Ah battery-and-charger kit. The Australian product pages do not state that these 36V batteries can be used in US 40V tools, nor do the US pages authorize 36V batteries in Australian tools.

What the official compatibility statements actually establish
| Region and platform | Officially stated compatibility | What the statement does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| United States, 40V | Ryobi says 40V batteries are compatible with any Ryobi 40V product on the 40V 4Ah product page. | It does not authorize a 36V battery, an Australian battery, or a charger from another region. |
| Australia, 36V | The 36V HP 8Ah battery fits Ryobi 36V garden tools with a battery slot large enough for that design. | It does not say that every 36V battery fits every 36V tool, or that a 40V battery fits a 36V tool. |
| Australia/New Zealand chargers | Ryobi Australia says its AU/NZ chargers can only be used in Australia and New Zealand. | The pages do not establish cross-region charger compatibility with US equipment. |
The safest interpretation is therefore narrow: match the platform label, exact tool, physical slot and regional charger guidance. A number printed on a battery is not a substitute for that check.
Can you use a 36V battery in a 40V Ryobi tool?
Do not assume that you can. The official pages do not describe a 36V-to-40V adapter, cross-platform connector, or approved substitution. They also do not explain whether the labels represent the same electrical design measured or marketed differently. Without that information, forcing a battery into a tool, modifying the connector, or relying on a third-party adapter creates an unverified combination.
Use this decision rule:
- Tool marked 40V: select a battery from the Ryobi 40V range listed for your market and verify the exact model.
- Tool marked 36V: select a Ryobi 36V battery listed for that Australian or New Zealand garden-tool range and check the slot-size condition.
- Label or model unclear: stop and identify the tool from its rating plate, manual, packaging or regional Ryobi support page before buying.
- Battery does not slide in naturally: do not trim plastic, defeat a latch or bridge contacts. A mismatch is a reason to stop, not a fitting problem to overcome.
How to identify the correct platform before buying
- Read the tool label. Look for the printed platform designation, such as 40V or 36V, and record the complete model number. Photograph the rating plate if the lettering is worn.
- Open the regional Ryobi site. US owners should start with the Ryobi US batteries and chargers support page. Australian owners should use the Australian 36V battery guide and the tool’s product page.
- Match the battery family, not just capacity. A 4Ah or 8Ah label describes capacity within a listed range; it does not turn a 36V battery into a 40V battery or vice versa.
- Compare the physical interface. Check the rails, latch, contacts and available slot space against the battery page. Ryobi Australia explicitly makes slot size part of the 36V HP 8Ah compatibility condition.
- Confirm the charger model and region. Use the charger specified for the battery family. Australian guidance limits AU/NZ chargers to Australia and New Zealand, and the reviewed pages do not approve cross-region charger use.
- Keep the records. Save the product page, model number and purchase receipt. Those details make it easier for Ryobi support or a retailer to resolve a compatibility question.

What 4Ah and 8Ah tell you—and what they do not
Amp-hour capacity is a separate specification from the platform label. Ryobi lists 4Ah and 8Ah options in both the US 40V material and the Australian 36V material. Within a confirmed platform, capacity can help you choose between a smaller, lighter battery and a higher-capacity option, but the pages supplied do not give a universal runtime figure.
Do not convert an Ah number directly into a promised mowing, trimming or blowing time. Actual runtime depends on the tool, load, operating conditions, battery condition and other variables that are not standardized by the product pages. Compare capacity only after confirming that both batteries belong to the same tool platform and fit the same tool.
When a 4Ah battery may make sense
- You want the lower-capacity option listed for your platform.
- Your tool’s documentation names a 4Ah battery as compatible.
- You prefer to verify fit and charger support with a smaller battery before adding another pack.
When an 8Ah battery may make sense
- Your platform lists an 8Ah model and the tool’s slot accepts that physical design.
- You want the higher-capacity option for a compatible workload, accepting that the product pages do not promise a specific runtime.
- You are buying the Australian 36V HP 8Ah model and have confirmed the tool has a slot large enough for it.
Chargers are part of the compatibility decision
A battery and tool can be the right platform while the charger is still wrong for the region or model. Ryobi Australia states that its AU/NZ chargers can only be used in Australia and New Zealand. That is a regional restriction, not evidence that an Australian charger is suitable for a US 40V battery.

Use the regional support page or product listing to confirm the match. If a retailer bundles a battery and charger, check that both items are intended for your country and platform; do not assume that a plug adapter resolves an electrical or control-system difference.
For support questions, Ryobi US directs customers to have a compatible tool and charger available when seeking battery assistance. Providing those model numbers is more useful than describing the battery only as “36V” or “40V.”
Why the voltage number alone cannot answer the question
The reviewed Ryobi pages do not explain why US materials use 40V while Australian materials use 36V. They do not state whether the regional batteries share the same chemistry, connector, voltage-measurement convention, communication system or tool interface. They also do not say that one label is a nominal value and the other a maximum value. Those explanations may appear elsewhere, but they are not established by the product information used here.
That uncertainty changes how you should compare products. A 40V label is not automatically “more powerful” than a 36V label when the products are sold in different regional systems. There is no independent published performance test in the supplied material that compares output, runtime, cutting speed or battery life across the two ranges. Any ranking based solely on the printed number would go beyond the documented evidence.
Troubleshooting common purchase and fit problems
The battery is from the right brand but will not latch
Check the platform designation and complete model numbers first. Then compare the tool’s slot with the battery design. For the Australian 36V HP 8Ah battery, slot size is an explicit condition of compatibility. Do not sand the rails or remove the latch; obtain the battery model specified for the tool.

The battery fits physically but the tool will not start
Remove it and verify the platform and region. Physical insertion alone is not an approval of the electrical or control interface. Check the tool manual and the matching regional product page, then contact Ryobi support with both model numbers if the documentation is inconclusive.
A US retailer lists a 40V battery while your tool was bought in Australia
Do not use the listing as proof of cross-region compatibility. Confirm the Australian tool model and the 36V battery guidance first. Regional catalogs can use different labels, product designs and chargers.
The charger is missing from a used-tool purchase
Identify the battery and tool models before buying a charger. Australian guidance restricts AU/NZ chargers to those countries, and the reviewed pages do not establish cross-region charging. A battery-and-charger kit may be simpler when the exact standalone charger is unavailable, but the kit still must match the platform and region.
You are considering a third-party adapter
The official pages reviewed do not approve adapters that convert between Ryobi 36V and 40V systems. Without an explicit manufacturer approval for your exact tool and battery, an adapter is an unverified setup. Choose a battery listed for the tool instead.
A practical buying checklist
- Write down the tool’s complete model number and country of purchase.
- Record whether the tool is labeled 40V or 36V.
- Open the matching regional Ryobi catalog, not a listing from another market.
- Choose the battery family first; choose 4Ah or 8Ah only after platform compatibility is confirmed.
- Verify rails, latch, contacts and slot clearance, especially for the Australian 36V HP 8Ah design.
- Match the charger model and country requirements.
- Keep the product page and receipt in case the battery must be exchanged.
- Stop if the listing omits a model number, region or compatibility statement.
Which battery should you buy?
For a US 40V tool
Start with the Ryobi US 40V catalog and select a battery identified for the 40V platform. The OP40406TA 4Ah and OP40806TA 8Ah High Performance EDGE batteries are documented examples. Ryobi’s US statement covers compatibility among 40V products, but you should still verify the tool model and the charger supplied for your purchase.
For an Australian or New Zealand 36V tool
Use the Australian 36V battery pages. The 36V 4Ah battery and 36V HP 8Ah battery are documented examples; the latter requires a garden-tool slot large enough for its design. If you need both components, the R36SK4 36V 4Ah battery-and-charger kit appears in Ryobi Australia’s support catalog. Confirm that your tool is in the covered 36V garden-tool range before ordering.
For a tool brought across borders
Do not infer compatibility from the tool’s brand or from a battery’s number. Identify the exact tool model, the market for which it was sold and the charger requirements. If the regional documentation does not explicitly match the battery and tool, ask Ryobi support before connecting them.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteBottom line
Ryobi’s 40V and 36V batteries are documented as separate regional platforms: 40V in the US materials and 36V in the Australian garden-tool materials. The official pages confirm within-platform compatibility, but they do not confirm that a 36V battery works in a 40V tool or explain whether the two labels describe identical electrical designs. Match the exact platform, model, physical slot and regional charger, and never use the voltage number alone as a compatibility test.
