An 18V ONE+ pack belongs in a tool specified for 18V ONE+, while a 40V pack belongs in a 40V tool. Some Ryobi chargers, including the PCG007 and the legacy P137, can charge both battery families. That dual-platform charger capability does not make the batteries electrically or mechanically interchangeable in tools.
What the 18V ONE+ and 40V labels actually mean
A battery platform is more than the number printed on a pack. The voltage, terminal arrangement, physical rails, control electronics and the tool’s firmware or protection circuitry are designed as a system. Ryobi uses “18V ONE+” to identify one system and “40V” to identify another. The tool, battery and charger must each support the same system unless the manufacturer explicitly says otherwise.

Ryobi’s ONE+ platform page describes more than 300 compatible products. Its battery documentation says an 18V ONE+ battery is compatible with any Ryobi 18V ONE+ product. That is a platform-specific promise: it applies to products carrying the 18V ONE+ designation, not to every Ryobi cordless tool.

The company’s storm-preparation product listing places 18V ONE+ and 40V battery models in separate sections and does not state that either family can power tools from the other. Treat the voltage family printed on the tool and battery as a hard compatibility boundary.

Are Ryobi 18V and 40V batteries interchangeable?
No. An 18V ONE+ battery is not a drop-in replacement for a 40V battery, and a 40V battery is not a drop-in replacement for an 18V ONE+ battery. A tool designed for one family should be used only with packs identified for that family in its manual or on its product label.
| Question | Answer | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Will an 18V ONE+ battery work in a 40V tool? | No; the platforms are separate. | The tool label, manual and battery requirement must all specify 40V. |
| Will a 40V battery work in an 18V ONE+ tool? | No; the platforms are separate. | The tool must identify itself as an 18V ONE+ product. |
| Can an 18V ONE+ battery move among 18V ONE+ tools? | Yes, where the tool is an 18V ONE+ product. | Confirm the ONE+ marking and the exact tool model. |
| Can a 40V battery move among 40V tools? | Use only where Ryobi identifies the pack and tool as compatible 40V products. | Read the model-specific manual; the broad 18V ONE+ compatibility statement does not cover 40V. |
| Can one charger charge both families? | Some named chargers can; ordinary single-platform chargers cannot be assumed to. | Check the charger model’s official compatibility statement. |
Do not force a pack into a slot, remove or alter terminals, or rely on a third-party adapter to bridge the families. The official material reviewed does not establish an approved adapter solution or its safety. Without an explicit Ryobi approval for the exact tool, battery and adapter combination, it is not a supported configuration.
How to identify the correct battery for a tool
The safest method is to start with the tool rather than the battery you already own. Use this sequence whenever you are buying a replacement, adding a tool or accepting a used tool from someone else.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Read the platform marking on the tool. Look for “18V ONE+” or “40V” on the housing, nameplate, packaging or product listing.
- Find the exact model number. Record the letters and numbers from the tool label. Similar-looking tools can belong to different voltage families.
- Open the model’s manual or official product page. Confirm the required battery family and any stated pack restrictions before ordering.
- Match the family first, then capacity. For an 18V ONE+ tool, select an 18V ONE+ pack. For a 40V tool, select a 40V pack. Only after that decision should you compare amp-hour capacity or physical size.
- Check the charger separately. A charger that accepts both families can simplify charging, but it does not change the battery requirement printed on the tool.
- Keep the receipt and model information. If a pack does not seat correctly or the tool refuses to start, the model number lets Ryobi support verify the combination without guesswork.
Which tools belong to each battery family?
18V ONE+ tools
The 18V ONE+ family is the broad, cross-product platform. Ryobi says its ONE+ collection contains more than 300 compatible products, and the company’s statement is explicit: “With 30 years of battery compatibility, RYOBI™ 18V ONE+™ batteries are compatible with any RYOBI™ 18V ONE+™ product.” That makes an existing 18V ONE+ battery useful when expanding within the same labeled platform.
The number of products does not mean that every Ryobi cordless product uses 18V ONE+. A tool must carry the ONE+ designation or be identified by its manual as an 18V ONE+ model. If a listing says only “Ryobi cordless” without a platform, stop and verify the model before buying a pack.

40V tools
Ryobi lists 40V batteries as a distinct family. The available material does not provide a comparable 40V tool count, nor does it establish a universal rule that every 40V pack fits every 40V product. For a 40V purchase, use the exact tool and battery model numbers and follow the compatibility list in that tool’s documentation.
When comparing the families, compare the jobs you actually need to do and the tools that perform them. Do not infer that a higher voltage automatically makes a particular tool faster, or that an amp-hour number can be compared directly between the two systems. Motor design, load, control electronics and pack configuration all affect real runtime and output.
Can one Ryobi charger charge both 18V and 40V batteries?
Yes, but only with a charger that Ryobi specifically identifies as dual-platform. This is a charger feature, not a tool-battery interchangeability feature. A dual-platform charger has charging circuitry and a physical interface intended to recognize both families; the tool still accepts only its own platform.
Ryobi PCG007
Ryobi describes the PCG007 as “Compatible with Any RYOBI 18V ONE+ or 40V Battery.” That wording applies to charging. It does not say that an 18V battery can run a 40V tool or that a 40V battery can run an 18V ONE+ tool.
Ryobi advertises two example charge times for the PCG007: a 4Ah 18V ONE+ EDGE battery in 15 minutes and a 6Ah 40V battery in one hour. These are manufacturer claims for those named capacities, not independent test results and not a universal time for every pack. A different capacity, battery generation, temperature or charger condition can produce a different result.

Ryobi P137
Ryobi also describes the P137 as a dual-platform charger that charges and maintains 18V ONE+ and 40V batteries. Its listed features include status indicators and simultaneous charging and maintenance functions. The cited product page is an older Spanish-language Ryobi page, so treat P137 as a legacy model and verify current availability, regional voltage requirements and support before purchasing one.

Why charger compatibility does not prove battery compatibility
A charger and a tool perform different electrical jobs. The charger regulates current into a battery and communicates with that battery’s protection system. The tool draws power from a battery under load and expects a particular voltage range, connector arrangement and control behavior. A charger can be engineered with two charging bays or two charging modes while the tools remain locked to their respective platforms.
That is why the PCG007 can be useful to a household that owns both families without creating a cross-platform battery system. You can charge both types with one approved device, but you must return each pack to a tool from its own family.
How to choose between 18V ONE+ and 40V when buying tools
Start with the tools, not the advertised voltage
Write down the exact tools you plan to buy over the next year, then note the platform printed on each. If most of your planned tools are 18V ONE+, staying in that ecosystem lets existing packs serve additional ONE+ products. If your required tool is specified as 40V, buying an 18V pack first will not create a substitute; you will need a 40V battery for that tool.
Account for batteries and chargers you already own
An existing battery stock has value only within its labeled family. Count usable packs, their capacities and the chargers that support them. A dual-platform charger may reduce the number of chargers on a workbench, but it does not remove the need to own the correct battery family for each tool.

Compare runtime for the actual task
Use the battery capacity recommended for the exact tool and workload. Amp-hours indicate stored charge within a battery’s voltage system; they are not a common performance currency between 18V and 40V. A 6Ah 40V pack and a 6Ah 18V pack do not represent the same stored energy simply because the amp-hour labels match.
Check availability at the time of purchase
Ryobi’s product pages and regional catalogs can change. Verify that the tool, replacement pack and charger model are currently sold in your country and that the plug and charging requirements match your region. Current price and marketplace availability are not stable specifications.
Buying a replacement battery: a model-first checklist
- Tool model: copy the complete model number, including suffixes.
- Platform: confirm the tool says 18V ONE+ or 40V.
- Approved pack family: select a battery named for that platform in the tool documentation.
- Capacity: choose the amp-hour rating appropriate for the task and the tool’s stated limits.
- Physical fit: do not assume a pack fits because its voltage label looks similar; rails and terminals must align without force.
- Charger: verify that your charger supports the selected family, or choose a documented dual-platform model such as PCG007.
- Condition: inspect used or stored packs for damage and follow the battery and tool manuals for charging and storage.
If a seller lists only “Ryobi battery” and omits the platform, ask for the exact model number and a photograph of the label. The family designation is more useful than a generic compatibility claim.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshooting common compatibility problems
The battery will not slide into the tool
Stop rather than applying pressure. Recheck the platform marking and model number. An 18V ONE+ pack should not be forced into a 40V tool, and a 40V pack should not be forced into an 18V ONE+ tool. If both labels appear to match, inspect the rails for debris and consult the exact manual; do not file, bend or modify the connector.

The battery fits but the tool will not start
Confirm that the pack is charged on a charger approved for that family and that it is fully seated. Then verify the tool’s model-specific battery requirement. A physical fit alone is not proof that the electrical and control systems are compatible.

The charger accepts one family but not the other
Read the charger model printed on its housing and compare it with the official compatibility statement. PCG007 is identified by Ryobi as compatible with both 18V ONE+ and 40V batteries. P137 is also described as dual-platform but is a legacy model. A charger without a clear two-family statement should be treated as single-platform until Ryobi confirms otherwise.
The advertised charge time does not match your experience
Compare your pack with the exact examples used in Ryobi’s PCG007 claims: 4Ah 18V ONE+ EDGE and 6Ah 40V. Different capacities and conditions will change charging time. The published figures are not a guarantee for every battery, and they are not independent laboratory measurements.
Practical safety rules
- Use the voltage family specified by the tool manufacturer.
- Use a charger whose model documentation names your battery family.
- Never bridge the platforms with improvised wiring, altered terminals or an unapproved adapter.
- Stop using a pack or charger that is damaged, unusually hot, swollen or emitting an odor, and follow the manufacturer’s service guidance.
- Keep battery and charger model numbers available when contacting Ryobi support.
These rules are especially important when buying used equipment, where a mismatched battery may be included in the same listing as the tool.
Bottom-line buying decisions
| Your situation | Most defensible approach |
|---|---|
| You already own 18V ONE+ packs and need another ONE+ tool | Choose a tool explicitly marked 18V ONE+ and verify the model’s pack requirement. |
| You need a tool labeled 40V | Budget for a compatible 40V battery; an 18V ONE+ pack is not a substitute. |
| You own both families and want fewer chargers | Consider a documented dual-platform charger such as PCG007; keep the batteries assigned to their own tools. |
| You found a used P137 charger | Confirm regional availability, condition and current support because the cited P137 information comes from a legacy Spanish-language page. |
| A listing claims “all Ryobi batteries fit” | Reject the blanket wording until the exact tool, battery family and charger model are identified. |
The reliable rule is simple: match the tool to its specified voltage family, then evaluate capacity and charging convenience. Ryobi’s dual-platform chargers can make ownership of both systems easier, but they do not turn 18V ONE+ and 40V into one interchangeable battery ecosystem.
