With a compatible USB-C PD source, it can negotiate a supply level up to 20 V for projects that need more than ordinary USB power. It does not generate 20 V from any USB connection: the source must offer a suitable PD profile, and the connected load must stay within the negotiated supply and the board’s documented limits.
What the PD Micro does
PD Micro is built around an ATmega32U4 running at 5 V and 16 MHz, and is designed for Arduino Pro Micro-style compatibility and pinout. Its USB-C power-delivery communication uses an FUSB302 PHY on the CC pins. A TPS62175 DC-DC converter and a P-channel MOSFET load switch are part of the documented design. The project also lists five voltage-indicator LEDs, three current-indicator LEDs, and a two-position 3.5 mm terminal block for the switched power output. These are specifications published by the project, not independent test results. PD Micro project repository

The board is listed at 1.6 × 0.7 inches, roughly 0.3 inches longer than a Pro Micro. Crowd Supply described it as bringing 5–20 V USB-C PD output to Pro Micro-style Arduino projects, including uses such as motor control or high-power LEDs. The value is that the microcontroller can request a suitable supply and control whether that supply reaches a separate load, rather than requiring a separate power source for every project. Crowd Supply campaign
Where the 20 V comes from
USB-C alone does not guarantee a 20 V supply. PD Micro negotiates with a USB-C PD source, such as a compatible adapter, and can select only a power option that the source makes available. The project’s “up to 20 V” description is therefore a selectable negotiated level, not a voltage the board boosts from an arbitrary USB port. The required source depends on the voltage and current the project load needs. PD Micro project repository

The documented output path includes a load switch controlled by the board. Project code can check the negotiated voltage and current before enabling that switch, which lets a sketch avoid connecting a load when the available supply is unsuitable. The repository cautions that PD Micro itself does not provide USB PD over-current protection. If a load draws too much, the source’s protection may activate; the resulting voltage dip can reset the board’s microcontroller. Design around the negotiated supply and the project’s actual current needs rather than treating the terminal block as an unrestricted power supply. PD Micro project repository

Initialize the PD user-device object with an appropriate maximum power option. A 20 V maximum is a request ceiling, not a guarantee that the attached source will provide that level.

Enable the load switch only when the negotiated values meet the load’s requirements. If they do not, leave the output off or request a suitable option supported by the source.
The project documentation and library describe these behaviors; they are not a guarantee that every charger, cable, or load combination will behave identically. PD Micro project repository

When PPS matters
PD Micro’s project documentation describes USB PD 3.0 Programmable Power Supply (PPS) support. PPS can allow a compatible source and board to negotiate voltage in 20 mV steps, with requested current limits in 50 mA steps. The repository lists possible source-dependent voltage ranges of 3.3–5.9 V, 3.3–11 V, 3.3–16 V, or 3.3–21 V. Those ranges are not universal adapter capabilities: the attached source must support the relevant PPS range, and the library must qualify it. If PPS is unavailable or not qualified, the library falls back to a conventional PD power option. The firmware also documents clock prescaling when requesting PPS below 4.5 V. Recommended Free Tools
A PPS-capable adapter is only necessary if the project specifically needs PPS’s finer voltage control. For a conventional fixed PD level, use a source that supports the required PD option; neither PPS nor a particular charger wattage is universally required by the board description.
