He also says Jake Fraser-McGurk has matured and improved his fitness over winter; a red-ball place, however, remains something the batter must earn in a crowded lineup.
South Australia’s target: contend for both trophies
South Australia enter the 2026–27 season after winning consecutive Sheffield Shield titles and a One-Day Cup across the two years before this campaign, according to the South Australian Cricket Association’s 17 September 2026 report. Harris has made clear that recent success is a platform, not a reason to lower expectations.

“We want those two trophies sitting next to me this time next year,” Harris said in the SACA report. His stated aim is for South Australia to compete each season for a Shield final and the One-Day Cup. The qualification matters: the team did not win both competitions last season.
The Shield standard and the One-Day Cup gap
South Australia’s results in the two competitions give Harris’s ambition a practical edge. The team retained the Shield, but finished fifth in the 2025–26 One-Day Cup, according to Cricket.com.au’s 2026–27 season preview. That makes the one-day trophy more than an opportunity to repeat recent success; it is also an area where the side needs to improve.

Harris told Cricket.com.au, “We want to win three in a row. We want to win the one-day trophy.” The first goal is a prospective Shield three-peat, while the second addresses the competition in which South Australia fell short last season.
Why Harris is wary of complacency
The previous Shield campaign began with two losses, as reported by Cricket.com.au and CricTracker. Harris’s account, carried by CricTracker, describes frustration in the group and direct conversations among coaches and players about lapses. Cricket.com.au says the side reassessed and refocused after three or four rounds. These are reported accounts of the campaign’s early turn, rather than a separate statistical analysis of its recovery.

For Harris, the lesson is to pursue the season’s goals without assuming that past titles make the next campaign easier. Cricket.com.au reported the team’s winter mantra as “where your feet are.” Harris explained the approach: “But by doing that, you’ve got to stay in the present. Make sure you play every ball, bowl every ball. In that moment, be the best you can be.”
It is a team standard built around attention and accountability: identify lapses, address them openly, and bring the focus back to the match in front of the players. That approach does not guarantee another trophy; it describes how Harris wants the group to work toward one.

Fraser-McGurk’s development and red-ball opportunity
Harris sees encouraging signs in Fraser-McGurk’s preparation. CricTracker, reporting Harris’s comments and attributing them to The West Australian, quoted him saying: “(Fraser-McGurk) has been excellent this pre-season, he’s matured a lot this winter and worked very, very hard on his game.” Harris also praised the batter’s fitness and strength.
Fraser-McGurk wants to play red-ball cricket, but Harris has not presented a place as guaranteed. He praised the player’s batting and white-ball form while describing competition for spots among several batters. As reported by CricTracker, Harris’s position was that Fraser-McGurk could put himself in contention through his performances; selection depends on how he goes and on the balance of the batting group.

That distinction keeps the development story grounded. Harris’s comments point to a stronger pre-season and a player seeking a broader role, not a confirmed red-ball selection or a promised date for one. A September 2025 Cricket.com.au preview had described Fraser-McGurk’s second Adelaide season as difficult after a breakthrough first campaign and noted Harris’s discussion of technical adjustments; that is historical context, not a current form assessment.
