Rust’s Livestock Update, released by Facepunch on 1 October 2026, adds farmable cows and sheep, lets players turn raw or spoiled meat into low grade fuel, and makes players repair Bandit Camp’s helipad before Air Wolf sells air vehicles at the start of a wipe. Facepunch says the communal repair is intended to keep early air-vehicle access from arriving too quickly; the update does not establish a measured change in acquisition time. The patch also adds new critters, recipes, loot rooms and building and gameplay changes.
What cows and sheep add to Rust’s farming loop
Players can capture wild cows and sheep, raise them, and breed them to pursue desirable genetics. Livestock have needs, and Facepunch cautions that their genes do not work exactly like plant genes, so plant-breeding methods may not carry over. When the new navmesh is enabled, NPCs can enter player structures and interact with doors, which can affect how animals move through a base. Facepunch’s Livestock Update describes the new system.

- Cows: provide milk.
- Sheep: provide wool.
- Both: produce dung and can be harvested for meat, bones and leather.
Grown cows and sheep can be led to a Stable and offered to its new vendor. The offer is randomized and influenced by gene quality. If a player rejects an offer, the vendor makes two more; after those are rejected, it will not buy that animal from that player for 15 minutes. Sheep wool can also be traded there, with the offer based on the amount submitted and a maximum of 400 wool per trade, according to Facepunch.

Milk can be consumed or used in recipes. Refrigerate it for four hours, then skim it to produce Skimmed Milk and Cream. Facepunch says milk generally extends tea effects, while cream can increase their potency. The official changelist names new milk and cream items, creamy and milky tea variants, beef and mutton, Shepherds Pie and Beef Pie.

How to use raw or spoiled meat in the Biofuel Generator
The Biofuel Generator converts organic matter—including raw or spoiled meat—into low grade fuel. Fill it with material, stir it by hand, and let it process; Facepunch says it needs another stir after around 30 minutes. That interval is an approximate developer description, not a guaranteed timer. Electrical IO can signal when stirring is due, and the amount of fuel produced depends on the material’s calorific value.
Facepunch developer Ian Henderson described the change as “A way to finally make use of raw or spoiled meat. The Biofuel Generator converts organic matter to low grade, but it must be stirred by hand!”

Why Air Wolf will not sell air vehicles at the start of a wipe
Air Wolf’s helipad at Bandit Camp begins a wipe in disrepair. Players must transfer a specified amount of resources from their inventory by hitting the helipad with a hammer to repair it. The repair is communal and remains complete for that wipe, after which the vendor can sell air vehicles.

Facepunch says the gate is meant to require shared investment and prevent air vehicles from spawning too quickly early in a wipe, while eventually opening the vendor to everyone. That is the stated design intention, not a measured reduction in the time it takes players to obtain an aircraft. Server admins can alter the behavior with vehicle.padrepairsrequired and vehicle.setrepairablepads, as noted in the changelist.

Other notable changes in the Livestock Update
World details and loot
Decorative frogs, rabbits, squirrels, sea turtles, crabs and jellyfish appear in suitable biomes. Facepunch describes them mostly as set dressing and says they are heavily budgeted for performance. The update also adds Powergrid loot rooms to multiple monuments; accessing them requires power generated at Power Plant and different numbers of Heavy Fuses.
Building and combat feel
Sandbag barricades can now be stacked through four stages, with the final form resembling a pillbox. Throwing grenades, C4 and satchels receives client prediction intended to make throws feel smoother, especially at higher ping; the server corrects the result if client and server states differ.

Monument timing, decay and diagnostics
At Oil Rig, crude pumping takes 15 minutes to begin producing. At Power Plant, Heavy Fuse decay scales with server population: on servers with ten or fewer players it lasts four times longer, reaching its previous lifespan at 100 or more players. The F8 overlay now includes detailed frame timing. These are patch-note specifications from Facepunch, not independent performance measurements. The update post also says its new navigation system has been optimized to at least double its performance since the prior patch, without publishing an independent benchmark methodology.
