What Rust admin commands do
Rust server commands are console instructions interpreted by the dedicated server. They are separate from ordinary player chat commands and normally require an authorization level. Owners have the highest built-in authorization; moderators have a narrower set of powers. A command can also be unavailable because the server build, plugin set or execution context does not support it.

- Moderating players with kicks, bans, mutes and unbans.
- Moving, observing or temporarily protecting players.
- Testing gameplay with inventory, health and food controls.
- Changing the environment, weather and entities.
- Saving, restarting, profiling and diagnosing the server.
Run commands in the server console, or send them through a configured RCON connection. In either case, confirm the target and command syntax before executing a destructive action.
Give yourself owner or moderator access
Use the console to identify the Steam64ID
- Open the dedicated-server console or an authorized console session.
- Run
users. The output lists connected players, including their Steam64IDs. - Copy the complete Steam64ID for the account you intend to authorize.
Steam64ID targeting is safer than relying on a display name, because names can be duplicated or changed.

Grant owner access
Run:
ownerid <Steam64ID> "Name"Replace the angle-bracketed value with the numeric ID and use the player’s current name in quotes. Owner access has the largest blast radius: an owner can generally perform every administrative action exposed by the server.
Grant moderator access
Run:
moderatorid <Steam64ID> "Name"Use moderator access for staff who need routine moderation without unrestricted ownership powers. The exact command set available to a moderator depends on the current server build and command authorization rules.
Reconnect before testing
The authorization change is not active in the existing session. Disconnect and reconnect the newly authorized account before testing an admin command. Facepunch’s server guidance explicitly requires a reconnect after adding an authorization entry so the auth level is applied.
Authorize an offline player through users.cfg
When nobody is connected, edit:
rust/server/server.identity/cfg/users.cfgKeep each entry’s Steam64ID and name accurate. Stop or restart the server according to your hosting panel’s procedure before relying on a file change, and reconnect the account afterward to confirm the effective authorization.
Identity and command discovery
users
users prints connected players and their identifiers. Use it before a ban, teleport or inventory action to avoid acting on the wrong person.
find
find searches the command registry. For example:
find teleport
find weather
find banThis is the quickest way to detect renamed commands or build-specific alternatives. If a command from an old list fails, run find <term> rather than repeatedly guessing its syntax.

version reports server version information that helps you match behavior to the build you are actually running. Record it when troubleshooting commands that worked previously.

Moderation commands
Moderation commands affect real players, so verify the Steam64ID and document the reason before execution. Keep a staff log with the operator, target, time, reason and any duration your server build supports.

Ban duration support and argument order are version-sensitive. If a command rejects a duration or reason, inspect its current help output with find and the live Facepunch reference instead of importing syntax from another release.
Teleportation and observation
Move yourself to a player
teleport2me is intended to bring a selected player to your position. Confirm the target before running it, especially during a live raid or support incident.
Move to a map marker
teleport2marker moves the authorized user to the position represented by a map marker when supported. Marker behavior can depend on the client and server build.
Teleport to coordinates
teleportpos accepts a position using the syntax exposed by the current command help. Copy coordinates carefully; an incorrect axis or value can place a player inside terrain or outside a safe play area.
Teleport any target
teleportany provides broader teleport targeting on builds that expose it. Treat it as a high-impact command and test it on a controlled server before using it on a populated community server.
Inspect and spectate
debug.lookingat reports information about the entity under your crosshair. spectate is available on supported builds for observing gameplay without normal player movement. These tools are useful for investigating reports while minimizing interference.

Player assistance and testing
Temporary invulnerability
Use god true to enable god mode and god false to disable it where the command is authorized. Turn it off before evaluating combat balance or handing control back to a normal player.
Noclip movement
noclip toggles free movement on builds that expose the command. It is useful for inspecting bases and terrain, but it can bypass normal defenses and should not be left enabled accidentally.
Give items
give and inventory.give create or grant items according to the current item-name and quantity syntax. Use the command’s live help to confirm spelling and quantity limits. Record test grants so they are not mistaken for player-earned resources.
Restore basic needs
heal, eat and drink assist a player or a test account when those commands are available to the current authorization level. They are appropriate for support cases and controlled testing, not for silently altering competitive play.

Environment, weather and world controls
Change time
env.time changes the world clock. A typical form is:
env.time <value>Use the value format documented by the server’s current command help. Time changes affect every connected player, lighting, visibility and some event behavior, so announce them on a live server.
Control time progression
env.progresstime controls whether world time advances when supported. Verify the resulting state after running it; a paused clock can make a test environment appear broken to players.

Weather
Weather commands vary by build. weather.load is documented as a way to load weather settings, while other weather controls may appear in find weather. Test fog, rain and visibility changes with a small staff group before applying them globally.
Events and NPCs
Event and NPC commands are not identical across releases. Discover them with find event or find npc, then read the command-specific help. Avoid assuming that a command found in a plugin guide exists on an unmodified server.
Entity and building operations
These commands operate on the entity you are looking at or on a selected target:
ent killremoves the targeted entity. It can permanently destroy a building part, deployable or other object.ent locklocks the targeted entity where supported.ent unlockremoves that lock.ent whoreports ownership or related entity information.
Use debug.lookingat first to verify the object under your crosshair. A misidentified target is an easy way to damage a player’s base or remove the wrong deployable.
Server operations and diagnostics
Save and restart
server.save requests a save before maintenance. server.restart restarts the server where supported; warn players, allow them to log out safely and follow your host’s restart procedure.
Persist configuration
writecfg writes current configuration values to the server’s configuration files. Use it after deliberate configuration changes, not as a substitute for backups or version control.
Check performance
fps provides a quick performance reading in supported contexts. global.dump produces diagnostic information that can help with deeper troubleshooting. Collect diagnostics during a reproducible problem and avoid exposing logs that contain credentials or player data.
Profiling caution
Facepunch notes that leaving the profiler enabled slightly reduces performance, while recording a profile can degrade performance significantly. Enable profiling only for the shortest interval needed, stop it afterward and avoid diagnosing a busy public server during peak hours unless the impact is acceptable.
In-game console versus WebRCON

Configure RCON safely
Facepunch’s server startup guidance uses settings including:
+rcon.port <port>
+rcon.password <strong-password>
+rcon.web 1The RCON port is distinct from the server and query ports. Choose a strong, unique password, keep it out of public screenshots and scripts, restrict inbound access at the firewall or router and rotate it if staff membership changes. Use a maintained WebRCON client or administration panel, and test the connection from an approved network before opening access more broadly.
Self-hosting and rented hosting decisions

Grant the least authority needed. Review the users.cfg file and in-game authorization periodically, remove former staff and rotate RCON credentials when access changes.
A safe command workflow
- Identify the target. Run
usersand match the Steam64ID, not just the display name. - Check the command. Run
find <term>and read the current help for argument order and authorization. - Assess impact. Decide whether the action affects one player, an entity, the environment or the entire server.
- Announce disruptive changes. Warn players before restarts, time changes, weather changes or broad inventory operations.
- Execute once. Avoid repeated attempts that can duplicate items, stack bans or move the wrong target.
- Verify the result. Recheck the player, entity, ban list or server state with the relevant command.
- Record the action. Log operator, target, command, reason, time and duration where applicable.
- Persist deliberately. Use
writecfgor a controlled configuration change only when you intend the setting to survive. - Back up before destructive work. Save the server and retain a restorable copy before entity, world or configuration changes.
Common failures and fixes
“Command not found” or unknown command
Run find <term>, check version, and compare the result with the current Facepunch reference. The command may have been renamed, removed, restricted to a different context or supplied by a plugin that is not installed.

Confirm the Steam64ID, ensure the command was entered on the correct server, then fully reconnect. Authorization changes do not take effect in the existing session.
RCON connects but commands fail
Check that you used the RCON port rather than the server or query port, that +rcon.web 1 matches the client’s connection method, and that the password has no accidental spaces. Review firewall rules and server logs without publishing the credential.
A teleport or entity command affects the wrong object
Stop and identify the target again with users or debug.lookingat. Names, crosshair position and stale coordinates are common causes; do not repeat the command until the target is unambiguous.
Performance drops during diagnostics
Stop profiling and recording after collecting the required interval. Because profiling can reduce performance—and recording can reduce it substantially—schedule deep diagnostics during a maintenance window when possible.
Keeping a command list current
Use the live Facepunch command reference as the syntax authority because server builds can change command names, arguments and permissions. The Rust Wiki is a useful searchable companion, but verify every entry against Facepunch before deploying it to staff documentation. Keep your internal list stamped with the server version, authorization requirements, examples tested on your own instance and a rollback note for destructive commands.
