What has been built at Ramenskoye?
RBC-Ukraine reported on March 21, 2026, that satellite images shared by AviVector and dated March 15–19 showed construction in the central and southern parts of Ramenskoye airfield. A Russian technology outlet also described structures measuring 110 by 77 meters, attributing the imagery to the Military Informant Telegram channel. That attribution means its account is not a wholly independent confirmation of the measurements. The outlet’s report

What could the hangars contain?
The most plausible possibility in the available reporting is aircraft associated with strategic aviation, particularly the Tu-160 and Tu-95MS bombers reported at Ramenskoye. The reported dimensions and the outlets’ shelter interpretation support that possibility, but they do not confirm the intended use of these specific buildings. They could serve another aviation purpose, including maintenance, and the sources do not establish whether each hangar is intended to house a bomber.

RBC-Ukraine reported three Tu-160s, one Tu-95MS, and one Tu-22M3 at the airfield in March 2026. It also noted that one Tu-160 had left or been relocated between March 18 and 19. Would the hangars protect aircraft?
RBC-Ukraine said the structures could conceal aircraft from visual observation and help protect them from shrapnel. That is the outlet’s interpretation, not an independently verified engineering assessment. Concealment and physical protection are different: a building may make aircraft harder to see without being able to withstand a particular weapon.

The reporting does not provide an engineering rating for the Ramenskoye structures or establish how they would perform against drones, missiles, or other attacks. A Russian technology outlet reported that a model of a Tu-160 shelter had been shown to Defense Minister Andrei Belousov, but that does not confirm the mission or specifications of the buildings under construction. What other airbases can—and cannot—tell us
Construction reported at other Russian airbases provides context, not proof about Ramenskoye. In June 2026, The War Zone reported at least 17 apparent bomber-sized shelters under construction at Engels Air Base, based on Planet Labs imagery dated June 20. It said such shelters might offer some protection from smaller drones and obscure aircraft from observers, while noting that their protection level was unclear. The Moscow Times reported on July 14, 2025, that imagery analyzed by the Institute for the Study of War showed defensive construction at Khalino and Saki after Operation Spider’s Web. Those sites likewise do not establish what the Ramenskoye structures are for. The Moscow Times report

- Whether the Ramenskoye buildings are intended as aircraft shelters, maintenance facilities, or another kind of aviation infrastructure.
- Which aircraft, if any, will be housed in each structure.
- How much protection the buildings would provide against any specific weapon or attack.
- How construction has progressed since the satellite imagery dated March 15–19, 2026.
The available reporting relays open-source interpretations of satellite imagery; it does not include an official statement confirming the buildings’ mission or an independent engineering assessment.
