A Russian attack struck a Liberian-flagged civilian cargo ship at a port in Odesa Oblast on 3 October 2026, killing a sailor and injuring three crew members, Ukrainska Pravda reported, citing the Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority. The report says the dead crew member was a motorman and that all 13 crew members were evacuated to a safe location.
What was reported about the 3 October attack
Ukrainska Pravda’s report, published on 3 October 2026 by Roman Petrenko, describes the vessel as a civilian cargo ship flying Liberia’s flag. It attributes the casualty and evacuation information to the Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority.
- Location and date: a port in Odesa Oblast, on 3 October 2026.
- Vessel: a Liberian-flagged civilian cargo ship.
- Casualties reported: one motorman killed and three crew members injured.
- Evacuation reported: all 13 crew members were taken to a safe location.
The report does not identify the ship or its cargo, specify the weapon used, or describe the extent of damage. The Odesa Sea Port Authority’s news index does not surface a directly matching incident statement, so the details above remain attributed to Ukrainska Pravda’s account rather than presented as independently confirmed here.
How this differs from other recent vessel attacks
Two other reported attacks in September involved different ships and dates. They are separate incidents, not additional details about the 3 October attack.

Odesa maritime corridor context
The 3 October casualty report comes amid repeated attacks on maritime logistics in the region, but broader figures describe cumulative damage or earlier cargo volumes—not damage caused by this particular strike.
- Infrastructure and vessels damaged: a Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine report published on 14 September 2026 said that 1,173 port infrastructure facilities and 274 civilian vessels had been damaged or partially destroyed since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion.
- Cargo handling: the same 14 September report said cargo handling in Greater Odesa ports had fallen by more than 15 times after 22 July 2026.
- Maritime-corridor shipments: a Ministry for Recovery, Infrastructure and Transport report dated 14 April 2026 said that more than 190 million tons of cargo, including more than 110 million tons of grain, had been transported through the corridor since its launch in September 2023. These are the ministry’s figures as of that report, not a current total.
In its 14 April report, the ministry quoted Deputy Prime Minister Oleksii Kuleba, identified there as Deputy Prime Minister for Restoration of Ukraine and Minister for Development of Communities and Territories, saying: “Despite the repeated attacks, the work of seaports remains stable. Emergency and restoration work is ongoing on the ground. Ukraine continues to ensure the functioning of the maritime corridor, which is critically important for the export of Ukrainian products, in particular agricultural products, and supporting global food security”. The statement concerned corridor operations in April; it was not a comment on the 3 October incident.
