The crucial limitation: the pot is not suitable for induction stovetops, so induction users cannot use its defining searing feature. It is a practical one-pot option if you have a compatible cooktop and do not mind hand-washing the pot and lid.
What the RHSC650 offers
Russell Hobbs Australia lists the current matte-black RHSC650BLK as a 200W, 6L slow cooker with a removable non-stick searing pot, digital timer and three settings: High, Low and Warm. The manufacturer says it serves up to eight people. Other listed features include wrap-around heating elements, a tempered-glass lid, cool-touch handles and an auto function that starts on High and switches to Low after the cooking temperature is reached. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent performance measurements. Russell Hobbs Australia’s RHSC650BLK product page lists an Australian RRP of AUD 99.95; Russell Hobbs New Zealand lists the same model family at NZD 199.99. CHOICE’s public listing gives the RHSC650 a 2.9kg weight and dimensions of 25 × 39 × 26cm (H × W × D), alongside its stated 6L capacity and two-year warranty. Its Expert Rating and cooking-performance scores are behind member access on the page reviewed, so the public listing does not establish that CHOICE recommends or rejects the cooker. No. The RHSC650 series manual explicitly says the pot is “Not suitable for induction stovetops.” It permits stovetop use on gas and electric cooktops, but does not make the same allowance for induction. If you have induction, you can still use the appliance as a slow cooker; you just cannot use the pot for the stovetop searing step described by the manufacturer. Check your cooktop type before buying. Read the RHSC650 series instructions and warranty manual.

How the searing pot works
- Lift the removable pot out of the slow-cooker base and place it on a compatible gas or electric stovetop.
- Sear or sauté ingredients in the pot as you would in a frying pan. Do not use the lid while searing; the manual also advises working in batches rather than overcrowding the pot.
- Use oven mitts to return the pot to the base, then select the slow-cooking setting and time.
Use wooden, silicone or heatproof-plastic utensils. The manual warns against metal spoons, spatulas, tongs, forks and knives because they can damage the non-stick coating.
Timer, settings and warm operation
The manual describes a timed LOW or HIGH cycle selectable from 30 minutes to 10 hours in 30-minute increments; the displayed default is six hours. When the programmed cooking time ends, the cooker switches to WARM. After a further 10 hours on WARM, it returns to standby. Russell Hobbs recommends LOW for recipes calling for six or more hours and HIGH for recipes calling for up to six hours. These are manufacturer instructions, not independent measurements of the settings’ temperatures or accuracy.

The Australian product page separately describes an auto function that begins on High and changes to Low once cooking temperature is reached. That description is distinct from choosing a timed LOW or HIGH cycle yourself; the page does not provide an independently measured temperature threshold.
Cleaning, capacity and warranty
The pot and lid are not dishwasher-safe according to the manual. Wash them by hand with hot, soapy water and a cloth or sponge; avoid scouring pads. Wipe the base clean and do not immerse it. Although CHOICE’s public listing marks the bowl as fridge-suitable, the product-specific manual says not to refrigerate the cooker or cooking pot, so follow the manual’s instruction.

The 6L capacity is marketed as enough for up to eight servings, but the manual says ingredients should not fill the pot beyond three-quarters, allowing room for expansion. Warranty documentation states a two-year parts-and-workmanship period for goods bought in Australia or New Zealand, subject to its terms and proof-of-purchase requirements; regional conditions apply.
Food-safety points in the manual
- Thaw meat, poultry, fish and seafood fully before cooking.
- Make sure food becomes piping hot throughout.
- Boil dried kidney beans for at least 10 minutes before adding them; raw or undercooked kidney beans are poisonous.
- Do not use the appliance to reheat previously cooked food.
What public reviews and testing can—and cannot—tell you
At the time accessed in 2026, ProductReview.com.au showed a 4.4 rating across 16 reviews for its RHSC650 listing. Accessible owner comments praise the removable pot’s light weight, the convenience of stovetop browning, straightforward controls and ease of cleaning. Other owners report that LOW runs too hot for some recipes or note the lack of induction compatibility. These are individual experiences, not controlled tests; the aggregate rating can change and does not establish how accurately the cooker holds a particular temperature. CHOICE’s public page exposes specifications, but its Expert Rating and low/high cooking-performance scores were member-only in the page reviewed. No public numerical test score is available there to substantiate a claim about cooking performance. Treat the manufacturer’s settings guidance as operating advice, not independent validation.
Who should consider the RHSC650?
- A good fit: You want to brown ingredients and slow-cook them in one removable pot, have a gas or compatible electric stovetop, and value a lighter insert.
- A poor fit: You rely on induction for stovetop cooking, want a dishwasher-safe pot and lid, or require publicly accessible independent cooking-performance scores before choosing.
When comparing it with another slow cooker, check whether its insert can sear on your cooktop, capacity against your usual batch size, timer and warm behavior, cleaning requirements, insert weight and material, and the availability of independent performance results. Similar capacity or a similar feature list alone does not establish equivalent cooking performance.
