The Russell Hobbs Diamond Elite RHC590 is a corded steam iron with a 350 ml tank, manufacturer-rated 50 g continuous steam and a 220 g steam shot. Those figures describe published specifications, not independently verified ironing performance. CHOICE lists the model’s specifications, but its expert rating and detailed test results are not publicly visible, so there is not enough accessible evidence to call it a proven performer.
Is the Russell Hobbs RHC590 a good iron?
On paper, the RHC590 is a feature-rich corded iron: it has a long 3 m cord, vertical steam, automatic shutoff, and self-clean and anti-scale features. Whether it removes creases well, glides smoothly in use, or feels comfortable over a long ironing session cannot be established from the accessible independent review information.

Russell Hobbs promotes the soleplate as “2x smoother” and “over 2x more durable” than its standard ceramic soleplate. These are the manufacturer’s comparisons, not published independent test results. The manufacturer’s 2023 booklet also calls it “our most powerful iron”; that is promotional wording, not an independently established ranking.

Which model is this—and why the distinction matters
The RHC590 is the Diamond Elite model named in Russell Hobbs’ Australia/New Zealand instructions and 2023 booklet. Russell Hobbs’ UK page instead lists a Diamond Elite Iron as model 27000. Although that page gives several similar feature figures, it does not establish that the UK model and RHC590 are electrically or technically equivalent. Check the model number, voltage and plug for your region rather than treating the names as interchangeable.
How to use and care for the RHC590
Choose water and temperature carefully
- Follow garment care labels and sort clothes from the lowest to highest temperature setting.
- Tap water is permitted. In hard-water areas, the manual advises distilled water suitable for irons. Do not use chemically descaled or softened water.
- Do not fill above the tank’s maximum mark.
Use vertical steam safely
Set the iron to maximum temperature for vertical steam. Keep the hot soleplate away from hanging fabric, and check that steam or heat cannot damage anything behind it. Leave four seconds between steam bursts to allow the temperature to build again.

Clean the iron and limit scale
Use the Self Clean function at least monthly in normal-water areas and more often where water is hard. Russell Hobbs warns that returned products with scale-related faults may incur a repair charge under warranty.
Unplug the iron and let it cool before cleaning. Avoid harsh or abrasive cleaners, solvents and scourers on the soleplate; they may damage its coating.

Does the RHC590 turn itself off?
Yes. The manual says it switches off after about 30 seconds when left motionless lying down, or about eight minutes when left upright. CHOICE’s public specification listing gives the same intervals. Automatic shutoff is a safety feature, not a substitute for unplugging the iron when you have finished.
