Rupee Depreciation and Indian Stocks: Which Sectors Tend to Gain or Lose?

Short answer: A weaker rupee tends to help companies that receive substantial foreign-currency revenue while paying most costs in rupees. It tends to hurt businesses that import fuel, raw materials, finished goods or equipment, or that carry unhedged foreign-currency debt. The sector label alone is not enough: imported content, hedging, contract currency, pricing power, demand and the reason for the rupee move determine the actual effect on earnings and share prices.

There is no reliable, current ranking that makes one Indian sector an automatic winner whenever the rupee falls. Use the framework below to estimate each company’s net foreign-exchange exposure rather than treating “exporter” or “importer” as a complete investment thesis.

What rupee depreciation means for an Indian company

Rupee depreciation means one rupee buys fewer units of a foreign currency, such as the US dollar. A company that invoices a US customer in dollars may record more rupees when those dollars are converted. Conversely, an importer needs more rupees to pay the same dollar invoice.

The accounting effect is only the first step. A company may have dollar revenue and dollar costs, hedge its exposure, reprice contracts, or lose demand if it raises foreign-currency prices. The relevant question is therefore the net position: foreign-currency receipts minus foreign-currency costs, adjusted for hedges, debt and operating responses.

Why nominal and real exchange rates can tell different stories

Do not assume that a headline move in the rupee automatically means Indian goods became cheaper in every meaningful sense. The Reserve Bank of India reported that during 2023–24, “The 40-currency nominal effective exchange rate (NEER) depreciated (y-o-y) by 0.6 per cent, while real effective exchange rate (REER) appreciated (y-o-y) by 0.9 per cent.” RBI Annual Report 2023–24

NEER is a trade-weighted measure of the rupee against several currencies without adjusting for relative prices. REER additionally accounts for inflation or price differences. Thus, a nominal fall can coexist with a real appreciation if Indian prices rise faster than those of trading partners. Competitiveness, margins and demand depend on prices and costs as well as the quoted exchange rate.

The five channels that determine the result

1. Translation of foreign revenue

When billing is in dollars, euros or another foreign currency, a weaker rupee can increase reported rupee revenue if volumes and foreign-currency prices are unchanged. This is most visible in exporters and service companies with offshore billing. It does not guarantee higher profit: imported inputs, overseas payroll, commissions and hedging costs may rise at the same time.

2. Imported inputs and finished goods

Raw materials, components, chemicals, electronics, aircraft fuel and many commodities are priced in foreign currency. Their rupee cost rises after depreciation. A business with thin margins or little pricing power can see profit fall even when its sales are growing.

3. Foreign-currency borrowing

The rupee value of principal and interest on an unhedged dollar or euro loan increases when the rupee weakens. Accounting remeasurement can create a loss before cash is paid, while higher future cash requirements can affect leverage and refinancing. Natural hedges—such as foreign revenue matched to foreign debt—may reduce the exposure, but they must be checked rather than assumed.

4. Pricing, contracts and demand

An exporter may keep its foreign-currency price unchanged and gain rupee margin, cut the foreign-currency price to win market share, or be unable to reprice a long-term contract. Importers may pass higher costs to customers, absorb them, or lose volume. RBI analysis identifies import penetration, pricing behaviour, domestic demand, persistence of the currency move and price elasticity as important determinants of pass-through; oil and gold can have relatively inelastic demand. RBI Annual Report 2012–13

5. The macroeconomic reason for the move

Exchange rates rarely move in isolation. Oil prices, inflation, interest rates, foreign portfolio flows, global growth and risk appetite can all change simultaneously. A rupee fall caused by an oil shock may hurt fuel users even as it helps a software exporter on paper. A fall caused by global risk aversion may coincide with weaker overseas demand and lower stock valuations.

Sector patterns: who may gain and who may lose?

Exposure pattern Possible operating effect of depreciation Evidence to check
Foreign-currency exporters with mainly rupee costs Foreign receipts can convert into more rupees; competitiveness may improve if foreign prices do not rise. Revenue currency, imported inputs, contract repricing, hedges, competitor pricing and overseas demand.
IT and other service exporters Dollar billing can support reported rupee revenue, but onsite costs, salaries, subcontracting and hedges change the net benefit. Geographic revenue, billing currency, wage base, onsite cost, hedge book and contract terms.
Pharmaceutical and engineering exporters Potential conversion or competitiveness benefit when net exports are high; imported ingredients, components and energy can offset it. Export mix, imported active ingredients or parts, energy use, customer contracts, demand and hedging.
Import-intensive manufacturers and consumer businesses Inputs or finished products become more expensive in rupees; margins depend on pass-through and inventory timing. Import share, supplier currency, inventory days, substitutes, pricing power and debt currency.
Oil, aviation and other fuel-sensitive businesses Dollar-linked fuel or commodity costs rise in rupees; regulated prices, taxes and hedges determine who absorbs the increase. Crude or refined-product exposure, pricing formula, taxes, hedges and fare or product pricing.
Businesses with foreign-currency debt Principal and interest can rise in rupee terms when liabilities are unhedged. Currency and maturity of debt, natural hedges, derivative coverage and refinancing needs.
Exporters with high imported content Higher rupee receipts may be substantially offset by more expensive materials. Net foreign-currency position and the share of costs paid abroad.

How the main sectors usually respond

IT and business services

Software and business-process companies often invoice overseas clients in foreign currency while paying a large share of salaries in rupees. Depreciation can therefore lift rupee revenue and operating margin. The benefit is smaller when employees or subcontractors are paid abroad, when contracts are priced in rupees, or when the company has sold forward a large portion of receipts.

Check quarterly disclosures for constant-currency growth, reported-currency growth, onsite versus offshore staffing, hedge notional and maturity, and the sensitivity of operating margin to a one-per-cent currency move. A weaker rupee cannot compensate for falling client demand, project cancellations or wage inflation.

Pharmaceutical exporters

Export sales can translate into more rupees, but pharmaceutical supply chains commonly include imported active ingredients, intermediates, packaging or equipment. Regulatory delays, product-price pressure and competition can dominate the currency effect. The RBI recorded drugs and pharmaceuticals export growth of 9.7 per cent in 2023–24, with pharmaceuticals accounting for 6.4 per cent of merchandise exports; those are trade outcomes, not a measurement of how much depreciation increased pharmaceutical share prices. RBI Annual Report 2023–24

Engineering and capital-goods exporters

Engineering exporters may gain on foreign orders and currency conversion, especially when fabrication and payroll are in India. Imported steel, electronics, machinery, energy and freight can reduce the gain. The RBI reported engineering-goods exports grew 2.1 per cent in 2023–24 while describing broad weakness across merchandise exports and declines in several product groups. This mixed record shows why export growth should not be treated as proof of a currency windfall. RBI Annual Report 2023–24

Import-dependent manufacturers and consumer companies

Companies that import components, chemicals, electronics, edible oils or finished products face an immediate rupee-cost increase. The impact depends on inventory: goods purchased before the fall may support margins temporarily, while replacement costs later rise. Businesses with strong brands or contracts can pass through the increase; price-sensitive sellers may have to absorb it.

Gems and jewellery

An exporter can still be import-intensive. An Economic Times report archived in NSE materials cited almost 90 per cent import content for gems and jewellery during the April–October FY24 export period, meaning a weaker rupee could offset much of the benefit from converting export receipts. Treat that as the report’s dated sector estimate, not a universal current ratio for every jeweller. Archived report

Oil, aviation and transport

Crude oil and many refined products are dollar-linked. A weaker rupee raises fuel costs for airlines, transport operators, chemical producers and other energy users. Airlines may have fare or surcharge mechanisms, but competitive pressure, taxes, hedges and demand determine how much can be recovered. Oil marketing and other regulated businesses can experience timing differences between cost changes and administered prices.

Companies with foreign-currency debt

Infrastructure, shipping, renewable-energy and other capital-intensive businesses may borrow abroad. Examine whether debt is naturally hedged by foreign revenue, covered with forwards or swaps, or left open. An issuer filing hosted by NSE notes that foreign-currency movements can affect competitiveness and reported results and cautions that hedging may not be sufficient to prevent losses. What the trade data can—and cannot—tell you

Historical export numbers provide context, not a stock-picking signal. In 2023–24, the RBI reported the pharmaceutical and engineering figures above alongside weakness in several merchandise categories. In 2022–23, merchandise exports were US$450.4 billion, up 6.7 per cent, while imports were US$714.0 billion, up 16.5 per cent. The difference illustrates India’s trade composition; it does not isolate the causal effect of depreciation on company profits or share returns. RBI Annual Report 2022–23

Stock prices also incorporate expectations. If investors anticipated a rupee fall, exporter shares may have risen before reported earnings improved. If depreciation signals an oil shock or capital outflow, the broader market can fall despite a translation benefit for some companies. The available official material does not establish a current sector-index ranking or a causal percentage of stock returns attributable solely to the rupee.

A practical company-by-company analysis

  1. Map revenue currency. Read the annual report and latest quarterly filing for the percentage of sales billed in rupees and foreign currencies, by geography and contract type.
  2. Map costs in the same currencies. Identify imported materials, fuel, freight, overseas payroll, royalties, software licences and other dollar or euro expenses.
  3. Calculate a net exposure. Compare expected foreign-currency receipts with payments for the same period. Separate recurring operating exposure from one-off capital expenditure.
  4. Review debt and leases. Record currency, principal, maturity, interest rate and any natural hedge from foreign revenue.
  5. Inspect hedges. Note forwards, options and swaps, notional amounts, strike rates, maturity dates, counterparties and whether accounting is cash-flow or fair-value hedge accounting. A hedge changes exposure; it does not guarantee a profit.
  6. Test pass-through. Look for escalation clauses, surcharge formulas, customer renegotiation history and the time lag between input inflation and price changes.
  7. Assess demand and competition. Determine whether foreign customers can switch suppliers, whether the company competes on price, and whether a weaker rupee changes its market share.
  8. Run scenarios. Model a 5 per cent and 10 per cent rupee fall, keeping volumes, prices, input costs and hedge coverage explicit. Then model an accompanying oil-price increase or demand slowdown instead of assuming a stand-alone currency move.
  9. Compare disclosures over time. Reconcile the sensitivity estimate with actual quarterly foreign-exchange gains or losses and cash-flow movements. Investigate unexplained changes rather than relying on a single management comment.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Calling every exporter a winner: imported content and foreign costs can absorb the translation benefit.
  • Using sector averages as company data: two firms in the same industry can have opposite net exposures because of contracts and hedges.
  • Confusing revenue with profit: higher rupee sales do not prove higher operating cash flow.
  • Ignoring timing: inventories, hedge maturities and contract resets can delay the effect by quarters.
  • Treating historical trade growth as a forecast: the cited RBI figures describe 2022–23 and 2023–24, not current results.
  • Assuming a hedge removes all risk: derivatives can leave basis, rollover, counterparty and volume risk, and may not cover the entire exposure.
  • Reading the currency move in isolation: oil, rates, inflation, capital flows and global demand may be more important to valuation.

How to interpret a filing when the disclosure is incomplete

Some companies disclose only a broad statement that a one-per-cent rupee move affects profit. Treat that as a starting sensitivity, not a complete model. Ask whether it includes revenue, costs, debt and derivatives; whether it is pre-tax or after-tax; and which reporting date and exchange-rate assumption apply.

If the filing gives no currency split, use segment geography, import purchases, trade payables, borrowing notes and derivative tables to build a cautious range. Mark assumptions clearly and avoid presenting an inferred exposure as management guidance. The most decision-useful observation period is the latest quarter and trailing year, because hedge books and contract mixes change.

Bottom line for investors

Rupee depreciation generally favours a company with net foreign-currency revenue, rupee-heavy costs, limited imported content and effective demand. It generally pressures a company with dollar-linked inputs, fuel exposure, weak pricing power or unhedged foreign debt. Because those characteristics vary widely within each sector, inspect current filings and hedge disclosures before drawing a conclusion. A sector name is a screening tool—not a prediction of which Indian stock will rise.
