Yes—an entry dated October 13, 2026, in the CanItRunDoom archive records Classic Doom running on a SONOFF Basic R2 smart switch. The project is credited to Piuppi and named “sonoff-doom.” That establishes a documented project entry, not a reproducible proof that every Basic R2 can play a complete episode. The available record does not say how the port was built, what controls or display it used, or whether it progressed beyond a demonstration.
What was recorded
CanItRunDoom, an archive devoted to the question of whether almost any device can run Doom, lists an item titled “Doom on Sonoff Basic R2.” Its date is October 13, 2026; Piuppi is credited as the maker, and “sonoff-doom” is given as the project name. The archive’s slogan—“Everything can run DOOM, but can it run you?”—captures the point of the exercise: the surprise comes from the host device, not from Doom being a new game.

The companion project description places this entry in a long-running catalogue of unusual ports. Earlier examples in that catalogue span printers, phones, cameras, ATMs, satellites and LEGO displays. A mains-powered smart switch is an especially constrained host because it was designed to operate a relay and connect to a network, not to provide a screen, game controls or a conventional desktop environment.
What a Sonoff Basic R2 is
Related technical reporting identifies this class of Sonoff switch as an embedded device built around an ESP8266 controller. The ESP8266 is a small Wi-Fi microcontroller platform that can be reprogrammed for custom projects, which makes experiments such as this possible in principle. In a normal installation, the switch firmware handles wireless networking, relay control and the product’s other embedded functions; a Doom port would require replacing, extending or otherwise working alongside that software.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The model matters. “Basic R2” identifies a particular product revision, but the archive entry does not publish a component-level inventory, firmware revision, flash and RAM allocation, pin assignments or memory map. Those omissions prevent a reliable claim that another unit with the same retail name has identical capabilities or can be flashed in exactly the same way.
How Doom could fit on a smart switch
Classic Doom was designed for far more capable computers than a Wi-Fi switch, but its software can be adapted to constrained systems. A developer would typically separate the game engine from platform-specific services, then provide replacements for video output, input, timing, storage and—if supported—sound. On a Sonoff, the difficult part is not merely compiling code; it is finding a practical way to show the image and receive commands.

A demonstration could send frames over a network or serial connection, use an external display, or repurpose another connected device for controls. It could also show a limited rendering test rather than a complete game session. None of those implementation choices is identified in the archive record, so they should not be presented as what Piuppi did.

Is it a real playable port or just a demo?
The careful answer is that the sources support calling it a recorded Doom-on-Sonoff project, but they do not establish the level of playability. A full port normally implies that a user can start the game, move, aim and interact with the level at usable speed. The archive entry alone does not say that happened. It also does not confirm a complete Doom episode, audio, a stable frame rate, local buttons, a connected display or any particular input arrangement.

That distinction is important when comparing unusual Doom projects. A video of a title screen, a rendered scene, a timed demo, a single level and a complete game are different technical achievements. For this entry, only the host device, credit, project name and date are directly documented in the cited material.
What would be needed to reproduce it
Anyone investigating the project should treat the following as questions to answer from the author’s repository or documentation before connecting hardware:

- Which Basic R2 board and firmware revision were used?
- What image is displayed, and how is it connected to the switch?
- How are movement, firing and menu actions entered?
- Is the software a native ESP8266 build, a remote renderer, or a hybrid?
- What flash, RAM and storage limits apply?
- How is the original switch firmware backed up, and how can the unit be recovered?
- Does the build include sound, networking, save games or only a visual demonstration?
An ESP8266 USB-to-UART serial adapter is a plausible development accessory for some ESP8266 work, but the reviewed record does not confirm that Piuppi used one. It should therefore be treated as a possible tool, not part of a verified bill of materials.

Electrical safety is not optional
A Sonoff switch is mains-connected hardware. Opening the enclosure, attaching probes, soldering wires or flashing a board while it is connected to household power can expose a person to lethal voltage. The fact that the controller is a low-voltage ESP8266 does not make the complete product a low-voltage project.

- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.

- Disconnect the switch from mains before opening or modifying it.
- Do not rely on the relay’s off state as electrical isolation.
- Use an appropriate isolated, current-limited development setup when working on the low-voltage side.
- Have the work performed or checked by someone competent with mains wiring and local electrical requirements.
- Do not reinstall a modified enclosure if insulation, strain relief or touch protection has been compromised.
Why the entry matters
The appeal is architectural as much as comic. Doom is being used as a stress test for a device whose normal job is switching a load over Wi-Fi. The experiment highlights how far an embedded controller can be pushed when a developer supplies a new software stack and an unconventional way to handle output and input.
It also illustrates why “Can it run Doom?” is not a binary engineering test. The useful follow-up questions are what part of the game runs, at what speed, with which peripherals, and whether another person can reproduce it safely. Until those details are published for “sonoff-doom,” the strongest defensible claim is the narrower one: Piuppi’s project is recorded as Doom on a SONOFF Basic R2, while its implementation and practical playability remain undocumented in the cited sources.
