What to buy first
In the opening town, take a modest haul to TrashAmerica Pawn, refuel, then prioritize a crowbar. A beginner guide lists the crowbar at $800 and says it opens safes, ATMs, and registers. It lists the Small Backpack at $1,000; the extra carrying capacity can make subsequent loot trips more productive. These are guide-reported, update-sensitive prices, not guaranteed current prices.
- Sell some loot: Get initial cash at TrashAmerica Pawn rather than trying to fund every purchase before your first sale.

How to manage police pursuit
Leave town with a partial haul when backup is approaching. The beginner guide says breaking line of sight and leaving the marked search area can reset pursuit, while wanted stars tend to persist. In practice, do not treat losing the immediate chase as erasing your heat: avoid unnecessary fights and keep driving toward the next resupply point.

Continue the loot-and-sell loop only when it is safe to do so. Spend on survival and logistics before optional firepower: carrying capacity and a useful tool help generate cash, while fuel and vehicle condition keep the escape moving.
Texas to the Mexico border
The route guide describes Texas as the last major resupply opportunity. Before taking the final highway, repair the car and reserve enough cash for fuel and the supplies you plan to use at the gate. The cited guides recommend armor, medkits, a working gun with matching ammunition, and spare fuel if available. Do not count on being able to shop or repair during the gate defense.

A first-run guide says lobby classes and vehicles are persistent purchases, unlike run loot and inventory, which it says are lost on death. Treat that distinction as guide-reported behavior and check the current game if you are deciding whether to invest in a persistent option.
Minimum kit versus extra safety margin

- Survive the defense: The border guide recommends taking cover inside a building, closing the door, healing early, and conserving ammunition.
- Move as soon as the gate completes: Cross during the barrier-open period. The exact defense timer and length of the opening are uncertain after patches, so pay attention to the live sequence rather than relying on a fixed countdown.
- Verify the escape: Look for the “YOU ESCAPED” message and a summary showing borders 4/4. The beginner guide also associates an escape with the International Fugitive badge.
Guides describe the defense as lasting about two minutes, but the exact current timer and barrier window are not established. Treat that duration as an approximation, not a dependable schedule.
Is a higher wanted level required?
No, not for the ordinary first escape described by the guides. Hardened Criminal is a separate challenge: the border guide says it requires escaping at police level 5. The ordinary International Fugitive escape is not presented as requiring that heat level.
