Run Retro Raspberry Pi Projects from CDs and DVDs: What Works and What to Choose

You can use a USB optical drive to read discs on a Raspberry Pi and, with suitable software and a stable mount path, use original media in some emulators. The disc is project or game media—not a boot device: Raspberry Pi OS still needs separate boot storage, such as a microSD card or supported USB storage.

What optical media can—and cannot—do on a Raspberry Pi

A CD or DVD can provide files to Raspberry Pi OS, including game data for software that can read it. Raspberry Pi’s tutorial covers reading discs and mounting them for emulators; it does not describe booting a Pi from CD or DVD. Keep the operating system on its own boot storage. Raspberry Pi documents microSD as common boot media and USB mass-storage boot for supported models, with USB power requirements to consider (Raspberry Pi computer documentation).

That distinction matters for a retro project: connecting a disc drive does not by itself make a game playable. You also need an emulator or other application that supports the disc format and can access its contents.

Choosing a USB optical drive and connection

Modern USB drive

Raspberry Pi’s 22 April 2024 tutorial demonstrates a Raspberry Pi 5 connected to an Asus SBC-06D2X-U CD/DVD/Blu-ray writer. The drive has two USB-A connectors; the tutorial connects both to the Pi 5’s USB 3 ports and says a similar drive may work. This is an example setup, not a guarantee that every drive is compatible. Check the drive’s connection and power needs against your Pi model.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

The tutorial says Raspberry Pi 5 can power most modern USB disc drives, while describing a different experience with Raspberry Pi 4. Treat that as model- and drive-dependent rather than a promise that a Pi can power any optical drive. In its Pi 5 setup, the tutorial also reports unexpected read-speed issues with powered hubs and recommends the Pi’s own ports. That observation applies to the documented setup, not every hub or drive. See the Raspberry Pi optical-drive tutorial for its wiring example and qualifications.

SATA DVD drive with a USB adapter

A SATA DVD drive plus a USB adapter is another possible arrangement; the Raspberry Pi tutorial mentions this approach in connection with an earlier Raspberry Pi 4 setup. It requires an adapter, and the power needs still depend on the specific drive and Pi. There is no verified cost or current-availability comparison here, so choose based on the hardware you already have and the connection and power requirements—not an assumed price advantage.

Mounting discs and keeping a path stable

Ordinary file access

On Raspberry Pi OS Bookworm, the tutorial describes automatic mounting when a disc is inserted. The system places it under a uniquely named, non-permanent directory in /media/<user>/. This is generally convenient for browsing files, playback, burning, or software installation, but the directory name is not a fixed mount point to rely on between insertions.

Emulators that expect the same path

Some emulators, including some PCSXR and DOSBox-family software, may expect each swapped disc to appear at the same location. If the mount directory changes for a new disc, software configured to read the old path may not find it.

The Raspberry Pi tutorial describes two approaches: DOSBox-X has GUI options for assigning different paths to the same mounted drive, and pmount can create temporary mount points under /media. The tutorial describes pmount as allowing users in the plugdev group to do this without elevated sudo privileges or an fstab entry. Exact commands and package availability depend on the installed distribution release; check those details for your image rather than treating the tutorial’s approach as a tested command sequence for every current setup.

Direct disc use is different from transferring RetroPie game files

Raspberry Pi’s RetroPie guide describes a separate method for transferring game files with a USB flash drive. It is not a method for mounting an optical disc directly in an emulator:

  1. Choose a RetroPie image appropriate for your Raspberry Pi model.
  2. Format a USB flash drive as FAT32 or exFAT and create a folder named retropie at its root.
  3. Connect the drive to RetroPie and let it create its folder structure.
  4. Copy game files into the matching folders under /retropie/roms.

Use game files you have the right to use. Raspberry Pi’s RetroPie installation guide advises against pirated content and points to homebrew and official game releases as legitimate examples.

Which setup fits your project?

  • Choose a USB optical drive if you want a direct USB connection and your Pi has suitable ports and enough power for that particular drive. The documented Pi 5 example uses both USB-A plugs.
  • Consider a SATA drive with a USB adapter if you already have that hardware and can meet its connection and power needs.
  • Plan for a stable mount path if an emulator must find swapped discs at the same location; ordinary automatic mounting may use a different directory for each insertion.
  • Use the RetroPie USB-transfer workflow when your goal is to copy supported game files into RetroPie’s ROM folders rather than have an emulator read original optical media directly.
