Short answer: The RTX 5080 is the faster 4K card. TechRadar’s direct tests put it about 5% to 15% ahead of the RTX 5070 Ti, depending on the game and settings. The RTX 5070 Ti can be the better value when its current price is substantially lower, particularly if you also play at 1440p or accept DLSS upscaling in demanding 4K titles. Both cards have 16 GB of GDDR7 and a 256-bit memory bus, so the decision depends mainly on performance, live pricing, power, and your rendering target.

RTX 5080 vs. RTX 5070 Ti: the decision in one minute

Choose the RTX 5080 if you want the highest frame rates in the tested 4K games, use a high-refresh 4K monitor, or want more headroom before lowering settings. Choose the RTX 5070 Ti if the current price gap is large, your main display is 1440p, or you are comfortable using DLSS in some 4K games.

The launch prices are historical reference points, not what you should assume today: NVIDIA announced a US launch price of $999 for the RTX 5080 and $749 for the RTX 5070 Ti on January 6, 2025. TechRadar lists launch dates of January 30, 2025, and February 20, 2025, respectively. Retail prices, stock and partner-card premiums change constantly, so check live listings for both models before calling one a bargain.

In TechRadar’s direct comparison, the RTX 5080 won every listed 4K result. Its advantage was not a fixed percentage: the review summarizes a game-dependent lead of approximately 5% to 15%. That spread matters more than the model names. A 10% lead may be worthwhile for a premium 4K build, but not if it costs far more than 10% extra.

4K performance: what the direct tests show

The table below reproduces TechRadar’s reported averages. Settings and rendering modes are included because a native result, an upscaled result and a generated-frame result are not interchangeable.

Game and test mode RTX 5080 RTX 5070 Ti What the result means
Black Myth: Wukong, 4K with 50% upscaling 75 fps 69 fps Both figures use upscaling; this is not native 4K rendering.
Cyberpunk 2077, 4K native, Ultra 68 fps 59 fps A native-rendering comparison at the stated quality preset.
Dying Light 2, 4K, High Quality 119 fps 103 fps The review’s High Quality test, with no claim that it represents every preset.
Returnal, 4K, Epic 104 fps 89 fps The RTX 5080 has more headroom at the listed Epic setting.
Metro Exodus, 4K native, Ultra 58 fps 56 fps A much smaller gap in this particular title and configuration.

These are reviewer averages, not a guarantee for every patch, driver, CPU or graphics preset. The Black Myth: Wukong figures use 50% upscaling, while the Cyberpunk 2077 and Metro Exodus figures are explicitly native. Do not average those rows together and describe the result as native 4K performance. See the complete comparison at TechRadar’s RTX 5080 versus RTX 5070 Ti review.

What the individual gaps mean

The smallest separation in the table is only two frames per second in Metro Exodus, where both cards are close to 60 fps. Cyberpunk 2077 shows a nine-fps difference, while Dying Light 2 and Returnal show 16-fps and 15-fps gaps respectively. Those differences can affect whether a demanding scene remains above a monitor’s refresh target, but they do not establish a universal advantage for every game.

At a 60 Hz display, either card may feel adequate in a title that stays near or above 60 fps. A 120 Hz or 144 Hz 4K display gives the RTX 5080’s extra headroom more practical value, especially in games represented by the larger gaps. Your processor, memory configuration, driver version, ray-tracing settings and frame-rate cap can also change the observed difference. At 4K, the GPU is more often the limiting component than at 1440p, but a CPU-limited result can still make two cards look deceptively similar.

Native 4K, DLSS upscaling and frame generation

Native 4K

Native 4K means the game renders its image at 3840×2160 before any reconstruction. It is the clearest way to compare raw rendering speed, but the most demanding option. In the cited table, Cyberpunk 2077 at Ultra and Metro Exodus at Ultra are native tests.

DLSS Super Resolution

DLSS Super Resolution renders internally at a lower resolution and reconstructs a 4K output. It can raise the displayed frame rate while changing the workload and image-reconstruction behavior. Black Myth: Wukong’s 75-fps and 69-fps results are specifically labeled as using 50% upscaling.

Frame generation

NVIDIA’s current RTX 5070 family page lists DLSS 4 features, including Super Resolution and Multi Frame Generation, for the 5070 Ti; the 5080 supports the same listed feature family. Frame generation creates additional displayed frames rather than rendering every displayed frame conventionally. A benchmark that includes generated frames should therefore be labeled as such and should not be presented as native rendering performance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When comparing reviews or your own settings, record three items: the internal rendering mode, whether frame generation is enabled, and the displayed output resolution. Two results with the same on-screen resolution can represent very different amounts of conventionally rendered work.

Specifications that matter for 4K

Specification GeForce RTX 5080 GeForce RTX 5070 Ti
CUDA/shader cores in the cited comparison 10,752 8,960
Memory 16 GB GDDR7 16 GB GDDR7
Memory interface 256-bit 256-bit
Memory bandwidth 960 GB/s 896 GB/s
Interface PCIe 5.0 x16 PCIe 5.0 x16
Reference graphics power in the comparison 360 W 300 W
NVIDIA reference required system power Not stated in the cited NVIDIA specification 750 W

The RTX 5070 Ti figures for 8,960 CUDA cores, 16 GB GDDR7, a 256-bit interface and 300 W total graphics power are confirmed on NVIDIA’s RTX 5070 family specifications page. NVIDIA also lists 750 W required system power for its reference configuration. Add-in-card manufacturers can change clocks, dimensions, connectors and power limits, so the exact card you buy takes precedence over a generic model specification.

Memory capacity does not separate these cards

Both cards have 16 GB of GDDR7 on a 256-bit bus in the direct comparison. That means you should not choose the 5080 on the assumption that it has more VRAM. The 5080’s advantage comes from its larger shader count and higher listed bandwidth in this comparison, while game engines and settings determine how much that advantage appears on screen.

  • Powered by the NVIDIA Blackwell architecture and DLSS 4. System Requirements: Minimum 850W PSU with 16-pin 12V-2x6 (12VHPWR) connector required. Verify before purchasing.
  • Military-grade components deliver rock-solid power and longer lifespan for ultimate durability. Compatibility: 348mm (13.7") length, 3.6 slots, 4.3 lbs. Confirm case clearance and slot spacing. GPU bracket included.

  • 3.6-slot design with massive fin array optimized for airflow from three Axial-tech fans
  • Phase-change GPU thermal pad helps ensure optimal thermal performance and longevity, outlasting traditional thermal paste for graphics cards under heavy loads

Equal capacity also does not make the two cards interchangeable. A game can be limited by shader throughput or bandwidth before it exhausts 16 GB, which helps explain why the 5080 leads in several tests despite identical memory capacity. Conversely, a title with a different workload can narrow the gap, as Metro Exodus does in the cited results.

Power, connectors and case compatibility

The reference comparison lists 360 W for the RTX 5080 and 300 W for the RTX 5070 Ti. A 60 W difference affects heat, cooling capacity and the power-supply margin, although the final draw depends on the partner card and workload. NVIDIA’s 750 W system-power figure applies to its reference RTX 5070 Ti configuration; it is not a universal recommendation for every computer or every board design.

Before ordering, open the exact product page for the partner card and verify:

  • Its stated total graphics power and recommended system power.
  • The required power connector or adapter and the number of separate cables your supply provides.
  • Card length, height, thickness and whether adjacent expansion slots will be blocked.
  • Radiator, front-fan and drive-cage clearance in your case.
  • Your power supply’s age, efficiency, native connectors and warranty condition, not just its wattage label.

The cited sources do not establish one universal PSU wattage for every RTX 5080 model. Do not turn the 5080’s 360 W comparison figure into a blanket system requirement; evaluate the complete build and the manufacturer’s instructions.

Price and value in 2026

Use launch prices only as historical context

NVIDIA’s January 6, 2025 announcement set the US launch prices at $999 for the RTX 5080 and $749 for the RTX 5070 Ti. Those numbers describe the launch positioning, not today’s street price, a sale price or guaranteed availability. The announcement is archived at NVIDIA Investor Relations.

Calculate the real price-performance gap

When you see a current listing, compare the exact card’s price with an in-stock RTX 5080 and RTX 5070 Ti from the same market. A simple calculation is:

price per frame = current card price ÷ average fps in the games and settings you actually use

Use matched benchmarks wherever possible. If your target games resemble the cited suite and the 5080 costs only a little more than its performance advantage, the premium is easier to justify. If it costs substantially more, the 5070 Ti’s lower price can leave more budget for a faster monitor, storage or a future upgrade. Because no reliable same-day prices are established here, a current value verdict must come from the listings you can actually buy.

Also compare like-for-like partner cards. A heavily factory-overclocked RTX 5070 Ti, a compact model with a smaller cooler and a premium RTX 5080 are not equivalent shopping entries. Include shipping, tax, warranty length and return terms when calculating the real difference.

Which card fits your gaming target?

Choose the RTX 5080 for performance-first 4K

  • You want the higher result in the cited 4K comparison and prefer not to reduce settings as quickly.
  • You own or plan to buy a high-refresh 4K display and want more GPU headroom.
  • You are willing to pay the live premium and accommodate the higher reference power figure.
  • You want the strongest conventional rendering result of these two cards, while still using DLSS selectively when a game demands it.

Choose the RTX 5070 Ti for value and mixed resolution gaming

  • Your current price gap is large enough that the 5080’s measured advantage does not justify the extra spend.
  • You mostly play at 1440p and use 4K only occasionally.
  • You are comfortable enabling DLSS in the most demanding 4K games.
  • Your case or power supply makes the 300 W reference-class design easier to accommodate.

Tom’s Guide’s 2026 graphics-card roundup describes the RTX 5070 Ti as a versatile 1440p choice and reports more than 60 fps at 4K in some of its tests. Those tests are not a controlled, game-for-game comparison against the RTX 5080, so use them as broader context rather than as a replacement for the direct table above. See Tom’s Guide’s 2026 roundup.

A practical buying and installation checklist

  1. Define the output. Decide whether your priority is native 4K, upscaled 4K with DLSS, or 1440p. Write down your monitor’s refresh rate and the games you play most.
  2. Set a live-price limit. Check an in-stock RTX 5080 and RTX 5070 Ti on the same day. Ignore launch MSRP when calculating the current premium.
  3. Match the benchmark mode. For each important game, note resolution, quality preset, ray tracing, upscaling mode and frame generation. Compare like with like.
  4. Check the complete PC. Confirm case clearance, motherboard slot layout, power connectors, power-supply condition and the card maker’s recommended system power.
  5. Install current software. Update the motherboard firmware if the manufacturer requires it, install a current NVIDIA driver, and remove an old driver cleanly if you are changing GPU brands.
  6. Validate after installation. Check that the card is fully seated, every required connector is latched, fans have clearance, and the monitor cable is connected to the new GPU rather than the motherboard output.
  7. Test your own games. Run a repeatable section at native 4K first, then test DLSS and frame generation separately. Record average and observed low performance using the same settings for both cards if you are comparing them.

Common mistakes when comparing the RTX 5080 and RTX 5070 Ti

Comparing generated frames with rendered frames

A high displayed frame rate with Multi Frame Generation does not mean the GPU is rendering that many complete frames natively. Keep generated-frame results in a separate column from native or upscaled rendering results.

Assuming 16 GB makes the cards equivalent

Equal VRAM capacity does not erase differences in shader resources, bandwidth or game behavior. Conversely, the 5080’s faster results do not mean every game will show a large gap; Metro Exodus in the cited test is a useful reminder.

Using one review’s percentage as a universal rule

TechRadar’s approximately 5%–15% lead is a summary of its tested suite. It is not a promise for every engine, patch, driver or quality preset. Look for results in the games you actually play.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Buying by the GPU name instead of the partner-card design

Two cards using the same GPU can differ in length, slot thickness, cooler, factory power limit and connector arrangement. The model family tells you the class of GPU; the exact listing determines whether it fits your system.

Treating launch MSRP as a current deal

The $999 and $749 figures are January 2025 launch prices. A card priced above or below them today may still be sensible or poor value depending on stock, warranty and the competing model’s current price.

It can be, particularly with DLSS in demanding games. TechRadar recorded 59 fps in native Ultra Cyberpunk 2077, 56 fps in native Ultra Metro Exodus and higher results in less demanding test conditions. The right expectation is selective 4K gaming rather than a promise of maximum native settings in every title.

How much faster is the RTX 5080?

TechRadar summarizes its lead at approximately 5% to 15%, depending on the game and test mode. The listed differences range from two fps in Metro Exodus to 16 fps in Dying Light 2, so the practical benefit depends heavily on your games and monitor.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does the RTX 5080 have more VRAM?

No. The direct comparison lists 16 GB of GDDR7 and a 256-bit memory interface for both cards. The 5080’s advantage comes from its listed shader count and bandwidth, not a larger memory pool.

Is a 750 W power supply required for the RTX 5070 Ti?

NVIDIA lists 750 W required system power for its reference configuration. Add-in-card specifications and complete-system loads vary, so check the exact manufacturer’s recommendation, connectors, and the condition of your existing supply.

Is the RTX 5080 worth the extra money?

It is easier to justify for native 4K, high-refresh displays and buyers who value the higher results in the cited suite. The RTX 5070 Ti is more compelling when the live price gap is large or your main target is 1440p. Compare current listings rather than relying on the $999 and $749 launch prices.
