Short answer: the RTX 5070 is the faster and more feature-forward choice in the available evidence, but only by a modest margin. TechSpot measured a 6% RTX 5070 lead over the RTX 4070 SUPER in its tested 4K results, while NVIDIA gives the 50-series card Multi Frame Generation in supported games. The RTX 4070 SUPER can still be the better buy when it is substantially cheaper and already meets your target frame rate. Compare the exact board, settings, supported DLSS mode and current local price before deciding.
The buying decision in one view
Neither card is a universal winner. The RTX 5070 makes the strongest case when you want the newer generation, NVIDIA’s Multi Frame Generation support and the best result from the independent 4K comparison available here. The RTX 4070 SUPER makes sense when a sale creates a meaningful price gap and your games perform well without needing the newer feature set.

| You want the newer Blackwell generation and GDDR7 memory. | You can buy it for considerably less than a comparable RTX 5070. |
| Supported games with Multi Frame Generation are important to you. | Your target games already meet your frame-rate goal with the older card. |
| You are targeting demanding 4K settings and value the measured performance lead. | You are prioritizing value over the newest feature set. |
| The specific model fits your case and power supply. | The discounted board has acceptable dimensions, connectors and warranty support. |
The decisive comparison is therefore not “newer versus older.” It is the price of two specific add-in boards against the games, resolution, image-quality settings and features you will actually use.

What the performance evidence actually shows
TechSpot’s 4K comparison
TechSpot’s 2025 review reported the RTX 5070 6% ahead of the RTX 4070 SUPER in its tested 4K results. That is a review-specific aggregate, not a guaranteed advantage in every game. The result can change with the game list, graphics preset, ray-tracing workload, driver version, processor, memory configuration and whether upscaling or frame generation is enabled.
#1 Best Overall
- Powered by the NVIDIA Blackwell architecture and DLSS 4
- Powered by GeForce RTX 5070
- Integrated with 12GB GDDR7 192bit memory interface
- PCIe 5.0
- NVIDIA SFF ready
A 6% lead is a useful tiebreaker, not a reason to replace a working RTX 4070 SUPER at any price. For example, a game running at 50 frames per second on one card would differ by only about three frames per second if the same percentage held. Actual per-game differences can be larger or smaller.
Tom’s Hardware’s 2026 roundup figures
Tom’s Hardware’s October 2026 best-gaming-GPU roundup listed the RTX 5070 at 103.8 frames per second at 1080p, 74.0 FPS at 1440p and 37.6 FPS at 4K. Those are the roundup’s test results, not universal frame rates. The same roundup reported a $659 median street price against a $549 MSRP for the RTX 5070. The median is a price snapshot from that roundup, not a guaranteed offer today.
Those numbers illustrate why resolution matters. At 1080p, a fast processor can become the limiting factor, so a GPU-to-GPU gap may shrink. At 4K, the graphics workload dominates more often, making the TechSpot 4K result more relevant to a high-resolution buyer. At 1440p, the outcome depends heavily on the game and settings.

- Different reviews use different game selections and test scenes.
- “Maximum” settings may include different ray-tracing options from one test suite to another.
- DLSS Super Resolution, Ray Reconstruction, Frame Generation and Multi Frame Generation alter what is being measured.
- Generated frames are not the same thing as conventionally rendered frames and should be reported separately.
- Price, board design and availability vary by country and by retailer.
Generation, memory and feature differences
| Characteristic | RTX 5070 | RTX 4070 SUPER |
|---|---|---|
| GPU family | NVIDIA Blackwell family | NVIDIA GeForce RTX 40 family |
| Memory type identified by NVIDIA’s family material | GDDR7 | GDDR6X |
| Capacity established in the surfaced review material | 12 GB in the TechSpot review description | Exact capacity for the specific board must be checked in its product specification |
| Frame-generation feature shown in NVIDIA’s comparison | Multi Frame Generation, demonstrated in 4X mode | Frame Generation |
| Upscaling and reconstruction in NVIDIA’s 1440p presentation | DLSS Super Resolution and Ray Reconstruction | DLSS Super Resolution and Ray Reconstruction |
The table deliberately separates what is established from what must be checked on a particular board. A product name does not tell you the cooler length, slot width, connector arrangement or factory power recommendation.
Blackwell and GDDR7
NVIDIA identifies the RTX 5070 family with its Blackwell architecture and GDDR7 memory. That gives the card a newer platform and the feature path associated with the 50-series. It does not, by itself, guarantee a fixed percentage improvement in every game.
GDDR6X on the RTX 4070 family
NVIDIA’s RTX 4070 family page identifies GDDR6X memory. The RTX 4070 SUPER remains a 40-series product, so its software feature behavior should be evaluated as a 40-series card rather than assumed to match every 50-series capability.
Memory capacity is a workload question
The available review material identifies the RTX 5070 as a 12 GB GPU. That number should not be labeled universally sufficient or insufficient. The practical requirement depends on resolution, texture quality, ray tracing, game engine and the amount of VRAM shown as used during play. Check the exact RTX 4070 SUPER board specification as well; manufacturers can publish different product details for different models.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →How DLSS and frame generation change the comparison
NVIDIA’s 1440p maximum-settings presentation enables DLSS Super Resolution and Ray Reconstruction on both generations. It shows Frame Generation for the RTX 40-series and Multi Frame Generation in 4X mode for the RTX 50-series. This is a feature demonstration, not a native-rendering benchmark.
DLSS Super Resolution
Super Resolution renders internally at a lower resolution and reconstructs the output at the display resolution. When a benchmark uses it, record the exact mode and do not describe the result as native 1440p or native 4K performance. Quality, Balanced and Performance modes can produce different image quality and frame rates.
Ray Reconstruction
Ray Reconstruction is another image-processing component in NVIDIA’s presentation. Because it is enabled in that comparison, results from the presentation cannot be compared directly with a test that uses conventional ray-tracing reconstruction or no reconstruction at all.
Frame Generation versus Multi Frame Generation
Frame Generation creates additional displayed frames from rendered frames. Multi Frame Generation extends that approach on supported RTX 50-series software; NVIDIA’s example uses a 4X mode. The number of displayed frames should therefore be kept separate from the number of conventionally rendered frames when judging responsiveness and GPU capability.
Support is game-dependent. Before paying extra for the RTX 5070, check whether the games you play support the relevant mode and whether you prefer its image-quality and responsiveness behavior. A feature that is unavailable in your main games has no value in those games.
Performance by target resolution
1080p
Tom’s Hardware recorded 103.8 FPS for the RTX 5070 in its 1080p roundup testing. At this resolution, many systems encounter a CPU limit before the GPU is fully occupied, particularly with a high-refresh monitor and less demanding graphics settings. The RTX 4070 SUPER may therefore feel close to the RTX 5070 even if a GPU-limited benchmark shows a difference.
For a 1080p buyer, compare minimums or frame-time behavior in the specific games you play rather than choosing solely on the average shown in a roundup. Also check whether your processor can sustain the refresh rate you want.
1440p
The same Tom’s Hardware roundup reported 74.0 FPS for the RTX 5070 at 1440p. This is often a more balanced workload for these cards, but there is no complete, independently tested 1440p matrix in the available material that covers every relevant game, raster mode and ray-tracing mode for both cards.
Recommended Free Tools
Use matched settings when comparing listings or reviews: identical resolution, preset, texture quality, ray tracing, DLSS mode, frame-generation setting and driver version. A result with Multi Frame Generation enabled should not be presented as a direct native-rendering comparison with the RTX 4070 SUPER.
4K
Tom’s Hardware reported 37.6 FPS for the RTX 5070 at 4K in its roundup, while TechSpot’s independent comparison measured a 6% RTX 5070 lead over the RTX 4070 SUPER in its tested 4K results. These figures support a modest advantage for the newer card in demanding high-resolution work, but neither establishes a guaranteed 4K frame rate in your games.
At 4K, decide whether you will use DLSS, ray tracing and frame generation. Native 4K, DLSS-assisted 4K and 4K with generated frames answer different questions and should be labeled separately.
Price and value: use live, matched listings
Prices in the available evidence are US snapshots and are not globally transferable. PC Gamer listed one 12 GB RTX 5070 at $779 on October 8, 2026, with price checks at Best Buy, Amazon and Newegg. That listing may be stale by the time you read this, and it is not a matched price comparison with an RTX 4070 SUPER.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTom’s Hardware’s October 2026 roundup gave the RTX 5070 a $659 median street price compared with a $549 MSRP. The difference between a median street figure and a single retailer listing illustrates why a buyer should check several current offers rather than use one number as “the price.”
A practical value calculation
- Write down the delivered price, including shipping and applicable tax, for each card.
- Match board class as closely as possible: standard cooler against standard cooler, factory-overclocked against factory-overclocked, and new against new.
- Check the return policy, warranty length and seller identity.
- Compare the price gap with the measured performance difference and the features you will actually use.
- Recheck the listings immediately before ordering because availability and promotions can change quickly.
If the RTX 4070 SUPER is meaningfully cheaper and reaches your target frame rate, the RTX 5070’s modest average lead may not justify the premium. If prices are close, the 5070’s newer generation and Multi Frame Generation support make the decision easier.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.System fit matters as much as the GPU name
GPU families contain many add-in-board designs. Before buying either card, open the exact manufacturer specification and verify:
- Maximum card length, including any front radiator, drive cage or cable clearance in your case.
- Slot width and whether neighboring expansion slots will be blocked.
- Power connector type, adapter requirements and cable bend clearance.
- Manufacturer-recommended power-supply capacity for that exact model.
- Display outputs and the number of monitors you intend to connect.
- Warranty terms and the seller’s return process.
The available comparison material does not establish one universal size, connector or PSU requirement for every RTX 5070 or RTX 4070 SUPER board. Do not substitute a family-level assumption for the model’s own specification sheet.

Use this procedure when deciding whether an upgrade is worthwhile:
- List the games that matter, along with your monitor resolution and refresh rate.
- Choose one repeatable scene or built-in benchmark per game.
- Record the resolution, graphics preset, texture setting, ray-tracing options and driver version.
- Run a native-rendering pass with frame generation disabled.
- Run a second pass with the same settings and the chosen DLSS Super Resolution mode.
- If supported, run separate passes with Frame Generation or Multi Frame Generation enabled and label them clearly.
- Record average and 1% low results if your benchmark tool supplies them, plus visible image-quality issues.
- Compare the measured result with the current purchase price of the replacement board.
This separates a genuine GPU-limited gain from a feature-mode gain and prevents a generated-frame result from being mistaken for a native-rendering improvement.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Calling a review aggregate a universal result
The 6% TechSpot figure applies to that review’s tested 4K results. Use it as evidence of a modest lead under those conditions, not as a promise for every game or resolution.
Mixing native and DLSS numbers
Always state whether DLSS Super Resolution or Ray Reconstruction was enabled. A higher frame rate from an upscaled image is useful, but it is not the same measurement as native rendering.
Counting generated frames as rendered frames
State whether Frame Generation or Multi Frame Generation was active, name the mode and discuss generated frames separately. NVIDIA’s 4X Multi Frame Generation example cannot be compared directly with a 40-series result measured without the equivalent feature.
Using MSRP as today’s checkout price
The $549 RTX 5070 MSRP and the $659 median street price in Tom’s Hardware’s October 2026 roundup describe different pricing concepts. A retailer listing, such as the $779 example reported by PC Gamer on October 8, can also become outdated.
Ignoring the board, not just the GPU
Two cards with the same GPU name can have different dimensions, coolers, connectors, factory settings and warranties. Confirm those details before purchase.
Who should buy which card?
Buy the RTX 5070
- You are building a new gaming PC and the comparable RTX 4070 SUPER is not substantially cheaper.
- You play supported titles where Multi Frame Generation is useful to you.
- You target 4K or demanding ray-traced settings and value the measured 4K advantage.
- You have verified that the chosen board fits your case and power supply.
Buy the RTX 4070 SUPER
- You find a clearly lower price from a reputable seller.
- Your games already meet your desired 1080p or 1440p performance target.
- You would rather save money than pay for a newer feature that your game library does not support.
- The specific discounted model has acceptable size, connectors, warranty and return terms.
Wait or compare more models
- The price gap is small but the exact board specifications are unclear.
- You need a complete game-by-game ray-tracing and DLSS matrix that is not available in the material above.
- You are choosing primarily on a single retailer listing or a promotional price that may expire.
Bottom line
The RTX 5070 is the better technical choice in the available evidence: TechSpot measured a 6% lead over the RTX 4070 SUPER in tested 4K results, and NVIDIA’s 50-series presentation adds Multi Frame Generation in supported games. It is not automatically the better value. Buy it when the live price is competitive and those features matter; choose the RTX 4070 SUPER when a substantial discount delivers the frame rate you need. In either case, compare matched settings and verify the exact board’s physical and power requirements before checkout.
