ComputerBase’s July 2026 test averaged the laptop system at 65% of the desktop system’s 1080p gaming performance. The laptop wins on built-in portability, while the desktop offers higher graphics power and more component flexibility. Because laptop manufacturers can configure the mobile GPU with different power limits and either 8 GB or 12 GB of memory, compare exact model specifications rather than relying on the shared “RTX 5070” name.
The two RTX 5070 products are different GPUs
NVIDIA uses the RTX 5070 name for both a desktop add-in card and a laptop GPU, but they do not have equivalent specifications. The desktop card has more CUDA cores, a wider memory interface and a much higher graphics-power rating. The laptop part is designed to fit inside a complete portable computer and is configured by each manufacturer within a defined power range.

The laptop power figure is a configuration range, not a promise that every model will sustain the same draw. Cooling capacity, firmware and the laptop manufacturer’s power policy all matter. NVIDIA’s laptop information also lists both 8 GB and 12 GB versions for this tier, so two notebooks carrying the same GPU label can have meaningfully different memory headroom.

Why the model number can mislead
A desktop RTX 5070 is a standardized card specification. An RTX 5070 Laptop GPU is a family of implementations. Before buying, find the manufacturer’s stated GPU power or TGP/subsystem-power limit, the installed VRAM capacity and whether Dynamic Boost is supported. A listing that only says “RTX 5070 laptop” leaves out the information most likely to affect performance.

What the direct benchmark actually measured
ComputerBase published a direct system comparison on July 3, 2026. The laptop was an Asus ROG GR70 with an RTX 5070 Laptop GPU and Ryzen 9 9955HX3D. The desktop used an RTX 5070 Founders Edition and Ryzen 7 9800X3D. ComputerBase’s 1080p gaming rating, calculated as a geometric mean across its included tests, scored the laptop system at 65 and the desktop system at 100.
That 65% figure is useful evidence of the performance class difference, but it is not a universal conversion factor. The processors, memory platforms, cooling systems and power budgets were different, and the laptop GPU was one particular implementation. Results can change with the laptop’s power limit, VRAM version, game engine, resolution and settings.
| ComputerBase test | RTX 5070 laptop system | RTX 5070 desktop system | Conditions noted in the test |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1080p rating (geometric mean) | 65 | 100 | Relative score across the publication’s included game and 3DMark tests |
| Anno 117 | 76 FPS | 105 FPS | Publication’s listed configuration |
| Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora | 74 FPS | 109 FPS | Publication’s listed configuration |
| Cyberpunk 2077 | 54 FPS | 84 FPS | Full HD, low ray tracing |
| F1 25 | 30 FPS | 56 FPS | Full HD, medium setting, VRS disabled |
| Shadow of the Tomb Raider | 171 FPS | 253 FPS | Publication’s listed configuration |
The review also reported average GPU power of 110 W in the laptop and 231 W in the desktop run. The laptop’s measured average exceeded the 100 W base figure shown in NVIDIA’s comparison because Dynamic Boost can use CPU power headroom when available. This illustrates why the advertised power range and the observed sustained behavior are related but not identical.
How to read the game results
The desktop led in every selected result. The gap was about 29 FPS in Anno 117, 35 FPS in Avatar, 30 FPS in Cyberpunk 2077, 26 FPS in F1 25 and 82 FPS in Shadow of the Tomb Raider. Those differences describe the two tested systems under the publication’s settings; they are not guaranteed frame rates for another laptop, another CPU or a different graphics preset.
The F1 25 result is especially sensitive to its stated medium preset and disabled VRS setting, while the Cyberpunk result reflects Full HD with low ray tracing. Changing ray-tracing quality, upscaling, frame generation or resolution changes the workload and can alter the size of the gap. Use like-for-like settings when comparing your own candidates.
Why the desktop is faster
More execution resources
The desktop card’s 6,144 CUDA cores versus 4,608 in the laptop GPU give it more parallel resources for shader, ray-tracing and compute work. Core count alone does not predict a fixed percentage advantage, but it is one reason the desktop part occupies a higher performance tier despite the shared family name.
Higher memory bandwidth potential
The desktop card combines 12 GB of GDDR7 with a 192-bit interface. NVIDIA’s comparison table lists the laptop GPU with a 128-bit interface, and laptop models may contain either 8 GB or 12 GB. A narrower interface and an 8 GB configuration can become constraints in demanding games, high-resolution textures or workloads that hold large data sets in VRAM.

NVIDIA specifies 250 W total graphics power for the desktop card, compared with a 50–100 W GPU subsystem range for the laptop part. A desktop case can provide a larger cooler, more airflow and a dedicated power supply. Laptop cooling must also remove heat from the CPU, display electronics and other components inside a compact chassis, so manufacturers balance sustained performance against temperature, acoustics and size.
Dynamic Boost can temporarily redirect unused CPU power to the laptop GPU. The ComputerBase system averaged 110 W, showing that a well-configured notebook can exceed its nominal base limit in some workloads. It does not make every RTX 5070 laptop a 110 W design, and it does not approach the desktop card’s specified 250 W graphics budget.
Price: compare complete computers, not a card with a laptop
NVIDIA’s US marketplace displayed a $549 price for the desktop RTX 5070 when checked on October 13, 2026, but the listing was marked out of stock. That is a dated listing snapshot, not a guaranteed street price or the cost of a usable desktop system.
A desktop comparison should include the complete build:
- RTX 5070 graphics card
- CPU and motherboard
- System memory and storage
- Case, cooling and power supply
- Operating system, if required
- Monitor, keyboard, mouse and other peripherals when you do not already own them
A laptop price already bundles the display, keyboard, battery, CPU, GPU, memory, storage, chassis and usually a warranty. To compare fairly, record the exact notebook CPU, GPU power limit, VRAM, display resolution and refresh rate, storage capacity and warranty terms. The available evidence does not establish a representative current laptop price or a universal price gap, so neither form can be declared better value without comparing two complete offers in the same region and at the same time.
A practical cost worksheet
- Write down the laptop’s total purchase price, including any required operating-system or warranty option.
- Price the desktop card and every other component needed to make the desktop usable.
- Add a monitor and input devices if the desktop buyer does not already have them.
- Match storage, memory capacity and display class as closely as possible.
- Compare the resulting totals with tax, delivery and current stock included.
Do not subtract the laptop’s built-in screen from its price and then compare it with the $549 card listing. That would treat a component as if it were an entire computer.
Portability and everyday ownership
The laptop’s decisive advantage is that one device contains the screen, keyboard, battery, CPU, GPU, memory and storage. You can move it between home, school, work and travel without transporting a separate tower and monitor. If you need one machine that can be set up wherever you are, that integration may outweigh the lower graphics throughput.
The desktop separates the graphics card from the rest of the PC. It normally remains in one place, but that separation gives you more freedom to select the processor, storage, cooling, case and display independently. It also makes future component replacement possible in ways that depend on the specific laptop design.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe cited comparison does not provide directly comparable measurements for the two systems’ mass, unplugged gaming runtime, noise, repair cost, upgrade longevity or whole-system wall consumption. Those characteristics vary by exact chassis and configuration. Do not assume that an RTX 5070 gaming laptop will provide desktop-like gaming performance on battery power, or that one laptop’s weight or noise applies to another model.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to compare two actual RTX 5070 offers
Step 1: identify the exact GPU configuration
Read the manufacturer’s technical specifications, not just the product title. Record whether the laptop has 8 GB or 12 GB VRAM, its stated GPU power or TGP range, and whether Dynamic Boost is available. If the seller does not state these details, treat the performance claim as incomplete and look for a full specification sheet.
Step 2: match the test conditions
When using reviews or benchmark videos, compare the same games at the same resolution, graphics preset, ray-tracing level, upscaling mode and frame-generation setting. Note whether the result is a GPU-only measurement or a complete-system result. The ComputerBase 65% rating is explicitly a system-level 1080p result with different processors, so it should not be presented as an isolated GPU scaling law.
Step 3: check the display against the GPU
A laptop’s internal panel may be Full HD, a higher-resolution format or a high-refresh model. A desktop buyer may choose a separate monitor. Make sure the display target matches how you will play: a 1080p panel at a moderate refresh rate places a different demand on the GPU than a high-resolution panel with a high refresh target. Do not use a benchmark at one resolution to promise a particular result at another.
Step 4: calculate the complete cost
Use the worksheet above and include missing desktop components or laptop upgrades. A low laptop price with 8 GB of VRAM and limited storage is not directly equivalent to a better-equipped model with 12 GB, even if both use the RTX 5070 name.
Step 5: evaluate mobility and service needs
Decide how often the computer will move and whether you need gaming away from a power outlet. For a desktop, check the manufacturer’s support and the replaceability of the graphics card, memory and storage. For a laptop, check which of those parts are replaceable on the exact model and what warranty restrictions apply. There is no universal upgrade or repair result across all laptops.
Which format fits which buyer?
Choose the laptop when mobility is a requirement
- You need the same computer in multiple locations.
- A built-in screen and keyboard are valuable enough to avoid buying separate peripherals.
- You accept lower performance than the directly tested desktop system in exchange for a single transportable machine.
- You have verified the exact VRAM capacity and GPU power limit rather than buying on the model name alone.
Choose the desktop when sustained performance is the priority
- The computer will remain in one location.
- You want the higher graphics throughput shown by the direct comparison.
- You prefer to select or replace the CPU, graphics card, storage, cooling and display separately.
- You can budget for the complete tower, monitor and peripherals rather than only the graphics card.
Consider a laptop docked at a desk only if you still value travel
A laptop can serve as a stationary computer when connected to an external display and accessories, but docking does not change the GPU’s CUDA-core count, memory interface or configured power limit. It preserves the mobility option; it does not turn the mobile GPU into the desktop card.
Important limitations of the available evidence
There is one useful direct comparison, not a survey of every RTX 5070 laptop. The tested notebook used an 8 GB configuration, while NVIDIA also lists 12 GB versions. The review paired the laptop GPU with a Ryzen 9 9955HX3D and the desktop card with a Ryzen 7 9800X3D, so CPU differences contribute to the measured system results. The test also covers selected games and two 3DMark tests rather than every current title.

Bottom line for the buying decision
The RTX 5070 desktop is the performance choice: in ComputerBase’s dated direct test, its system delivered a 100-point 1080p rating against 65 for the tested laptop system, with the desktop leading in each selected game. The RTX 5070 laptop is the mobility choice, combining the entire computer into one device. Select the laptop when travel and an integrated setup justify its lower and more variable performance; select the desktop when sustained graphics throughput, component choice and a fixed installation matter more. In either case, compare exact configurations and complete-system prices, not the shared GPU name.
