Expect a variable, usually modest-to-clear performance advantage for the RTX 5060 Laptop GPU—not a guaranteed generational leap. In one direct Asus TUF Gaming A14 comparison, the RTX 5060 version was faster in three of four listed tests, while the RTX 4060 version actually led at 1440p with Cyberpunk 2077 ray tracing set to Ultra. Laptop power limits, cooling, processor, memory, game settings and resolution can outweigh the GPU name.

The RTX 5060 adds Blackwell architecture, GDDR7 memory and DLSS 4 Multi Frame Generation to the RTX 4060’s Ada Lovelace, GDDR6 and DLSS 3-era feature set. That makes the newer laptop more capable in supported games, but you should compare native benchmark results and the complete laptop configuration before paying a premium.

The practical answer in one minute

  • Native rendering: The available head-to-head results show the RTX 5060 ahead in three tests and behind in one. The lead ranges from a few frames per second to roughly 16 percent in those particular runs.
  • Ray tracing at 1440p: The RTX 5060 did not automatically win. Cyberpunk 2077 at 1440p, ray-tracing Ultra, ran at 13.73 FPS on the RTX 5060 configuration versus 14.97 FPS on the RTX 4060 configuration.
  • Feature set: NVIDIA lists Blackwell, 3,328 CUDA cores, 8 GB of GDDR7 and DLSS 4 Multi Frame Generation for the RTX 5060 Laptop GPU. The RTX 4060 Laptop GPU is listed with Ada Lovelace, 3,072 CUDA cores, 8 GB of GDDR6 and DLSS 3-era support.
  • System design matters: Notebookcheck’s RTX 5060 database contains laptops reported at both 55 W and 115 W, illustrating how widely implementations can vary. A high-power, well-cooled RTX 4060 can challenge or beat a low-power RTX 5060.
  • Upgrade logic: A new RTX 5060 laptop is easiest to justify when its price is close to an RTX 4060 model, you play DLSS 4-supported titles, or the newer machine also improves the CPU, display, memory and cooling. A GPU-only upgrade is less compelling when the 4060 laptop already meets your frame-rate target.

RTX 5060 Laptop and RTX 4060 Laptop specifications

NVIDIA’s current laptop comparison page identifies a real architectural and feature change, but the specification differences do not translate directly into a fixed frame-rate percentage. CUDA-core count, memory type and feature support describe capability; the laptop’s sustained power and thermal limits determine how much of that capability is available during a game.

Specification RTX 5060 Laptop GPU RTX 4060 Laptop GPU What it means for a buyer
Architecture Blackwell Ada Lovelace A newer generation can improve efficiency and features, but architecture names alone do not predict FPS.
CUDA cores 3,328 3,072 The 5060 has about 8.3 percent more listed cores; core count is not a proportional gaming benchmark.
Standard memory configuration 8 GB GDDR7 8 GB GDDR6 GDDR7 offers newer memory technology, while both GPUs retain the same 8 GB capacity limit.
DLSS generation DLSS 4, including Multi Frame Generation support DLSS 3-era features Benefits depend on game support, mode selection and whether you value generated frames.
VRAM capacity in NVIDIA’s listed configurations 8 GB 8 GB The 5060 does not provide extra capacity for very high-resolution textures or future games.

These are official comparison specifications from NVIDIA’s GeForce laptop comparison, reviewed in 2026. They are useful for identifying the generation change, not for promising that every RTX 5060 laptop will be a certain percentage faster.

What the direct game results actually show

The clearest published head-to-head data comes from Tom’s Guide’s comparison of two Asus TUF Gaming A14 configurations. Because the chassis family is shared, the results are more informative than a comparison of entirely different machines, but they still represent those tested laptops and settings rather than every RTX 5060 or RTX 4060 model.

Game and settings RTX 5060 laptop RTX 4060 laptop Difference from listed values
Cyberpunk 2077, 1080p, ray-tracing Ultra 32.03 FPS 29.45 FPS 5060 higher by 2.58 FPS, about 8.8 percent
Cyberpunk 2077, 1440p, ray-tracing Ultra 13.73 FPS 14.97 FPS 4060 higher by 1.24 FPS, about 8.3 percent
Red Dead Redemption 2, 1080p, Medium 69.21 FPS 60.15 FPS 5060 higher by 9.06 FPS, about 15.1 percent
Red Dead Redemption 2, 1440p, Medium 42.32 FPS 36.38 FPS 5060 higher by 5.94 FPS, about 16.3 percent

The figures are reported in Tom’s Guide’s RTX 5060 laptops versus RTX 4060 comparison. The arithmetic percentages above are calculated from the displayed FPS values; they are not a universal performance rating. The mixed Cyberpunk result is important: a newer GPU can lose a particular workload when the tested systems, power behavior, drivers or frame-time conditions differ.

Why one percentage cannot describe the upgrade

Every laptop has a different GPU power envelope

Mobile GPUs are configured by the laptop manufacturer. Two machines carrying the same RTX 5060 label can run at different sustained wattages, with different boost clocks and cooling capacity. Notebookcheck’s RTX 5060 Laptop database includes reported systems at 55 W and 115 W, among other configurations. Those examples are far apart in available power, so the model name alone cannot identify performance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Look for a listing’s maximum graphics power or TGP, the performance mode used for testing and whether the laptop must be plugged in. A thin machine running quietly on a low-power profile may deliver substantially less performance than a thicker model with a larger heat sink and higher sustained limit. The RTX 4060 has the same kind of implementation spread across the market.

Cooling changes sustained, not just peak, performance

Short benchmark bursts can show a high boost clock before the heat system reaches its limit. Longer play sessions expose whether the laptop can hold that speed. Check reviews that report repeated runs, temperatures, fan mode and whether performance declines after several minutes. A well-cooled RTX 4060 can maintain its clocks while a thermally constrained RTX 5060 oscillates, narrowing or reversing the expected advantage.

The CPU and memory can become the bottleneck

At 1080p, especially in competitive games targeting high refresh rates, the processor may limit frame rates before either GPU is fully loaded. System memory capacity and configuration also affect asset streaming and minimum FPS. Compare the exact CPU model, RAM amount, memory-channel arrangement and upgradeability rather than assuming the GPU accounts for every difference between two listings.

Resolution and settings move the workload

Ray tracing, upscaling mode, texture quality, shadows and crowd density stress different parts of a system. A result at 1080p Medium cannot be used to predict 1440p Ray-Tracing Ultra. The four A14 results demonstrate this directly: the 5060’s advantage was larger in Red Dead Redemption 2 at Medium, while Cyberpunk at 1440p Ray-Tracing Ultra favored the 4060 configuration.

DLSS 4 and generated frames: useful, but not native performance

The RTX 5060’s most visible feature advantage is support for DLSS 4 Multi Frame Generation. This technology creates additional displayed frames between traditionally rendered frames. It can make motion appear smoother in games that support it, but generated frames are not equivalent to fully rendered frames: they can add latency, show interpolation artifacts and depend on a sufficiently high base frame rate.

NVIDIA states: “With these features, GeForce RTX 5060 offers double the performance of the previous generation GeForce RTX 4060 in games with DLSS 4 Multi Frame Generation.” That is a manufacturer claim conditioned on games using DLSS 4 Multi Frame Generation, not an independent, universal result and not a statement about native rendering. NVIDIA’s feature and game-update information is available in this GeForce News announcement.

When comparing laptops, record three separate numbers if a review provides them:

  • Native or rasterized FPS: the GPU renders every frame without an upscaler or frame generation. This is the cleanest way to compare raw rendering speed.
  • DLSS Super Resolution FPS: the game renders internally at a lower resolution and reconstructs the output. Image quality and performance depend on the selected Quality, Balanced or Performance mode.
  • DLSS Frame Generation or Multi Frame Generation FPS: displayed frames include generated images. Treat this as a smoothness feature, not as a replacement for a strong native frame rate.

DLSS 4 support matters most if your regular games implement it and you accept its image-quality and latency trade-offs. It matters less if you play titles without support, use competitive settings that prioritize latency, or plan to keep native rendering enabled.

What to expect at common gaming targets

1080p high-refresh gaming

At 1080p, the RTX 5060’s extra cores and newer memory can help, but the CPU often has a larger influence than it does at higher resolutions. The A14 results show a meaningful 5060 lead in Red Dead Redemption 2 at Medium, yet the Cyberpunk lead was only 2.58 FPS. If your goal is 144 Hz or higher, compare processor performance, display response time and frame-time consistency alongside average FPS.

1440p gaming

1440p increases the GPU workload and can make the 5060’s efficiency and memory bandwidth useful. In the A14 Red Dead Redemption 2 test, it delivered 42.32 FPS versus 36.38 FPS for the 4060. That is a useful advantage, but it still falls short of a locked 60 FPS target without adjusting settings or enabling upscaling.

Ray tracing

Ray tracing can erase an expected generational lead because it creates a demanding workload and exposes differences in power limits. The tested 1440p Cyberpunk result was below 15 FPS on both configurations, with the RTX 4060 narrowly ahead. For ray-traced 1440p play, plan to use sensible quality reductions, DLSS Super Resolution or frame generation rather than assuming the RTX 5060 alone guarantees smooth performance.

Texture-heavy future games

Both GPUs have 8 GB in NVIDIA’s listed configurations. The 5060’s GDDR7 is newer, but it does not increase capacity. If a game exceeds available VRAM, lowering texture quality or resolution may be necessary on either laptop. Buyers seeking a large memory-capacity buffer should not treat the RTX 5060 as an upgrade in that specific area.

Is an RTX 5060 laptop worth paying more for?

When the RTX 5060 is the sensible choice

  • The two laptops have similar prices and comparable CPU, RAM, display and cooling specifications.
  • You play several titles with DLSS 4 Multi Frame Generation and value smoother presentation.
  • The 5060 model has a higher documented power limit or stronger cooling than the 4060 alternative.
  • You want a newer platform and expect to keep the laptop for several years, while accepting that VRAM capacity remains 8 GB.
  • Independent testing of the exact model shows a sustained advantage at your target resolution and settings.

When the RTX 4060 may be the better value

  • The 4060 laptop is substantially cheaper and already reaches your desired frame rate.
  • The 5060 configuration is a low-power thin model while the 4060 machine has a higher power limit and better cooling.
  • Your main games lack DLSS 4 Multi Frame Generation, making the feature difference irrelevant.
  • You are buying for CPU-limited esports games, where processor and display characteristics dominate.
  • You need more VRAM: neither of these listed configurations provides more than 8 GB.

For an existing RTX 4060 owner

Replacing a working RTX 4060 laptop solely for the GPU is difficult to justify without a clear price advantage or a specific feature requirement. Use your current measured FPS and temperatures as the baseline. An RTX 5060 laptop becomes more compelling when the complete machine also offers a faster processor, better screen, quieter cooling, longer battery life or a materially lower total cost—not merely because its GPU number is newer.

How to compare two listings correctly

  1. Write down the complete model numbers. A product family can contain several GPU power limits, CPUs, screens and memory configurations.
  2. Confirm the GPU power specification. Look for TGP or maximum graphics power and note whether the figure applies only in a manufacturer performance mode.
  3. Check independent tests of that exact configuration. Prefer results that identify resolution, settings, driver, power mode, average FPS and low-percentile frame rates.
  4. Match the display to your target. A 2560-by-1440 panel places a different load on the GPU than a 1920-by-1080 panel. Verify refresh rate and response behavior as well as resolution.
  5. Compare CPU and RAM. Record the processor generation, core configuration, installed memory and whether one or two memory modules are used.
  6. Separate native and generated results. Do not compare an RTX 5060 DLSS Multi Frame Generation number with an RTX 4060 native number and call the difference GPU speed.
  7. Check game support. Make a list of the games you actually play and identify whether each supports DLSS Super Resolution, Frame Generation or Multi Frame Generation.
  8. Compare the total purchase cost. Tom’s Guide discussed a $150 difference between its tested A14 options; that is context for that comparison, not a current or universal market price.
  9. Read sustained-use observations. Note fan noise, surface temperature, throttling and battery behavior during long sessions, not just a short benchmark.

Common comparison mistakes and how to avoid them

Assuming the GPU suffix determines speed

“RTX 5060” identifies a GPU class, not a guaranteed clock speed or wattage. Always pair the name with the laptop’s power and thermal information.

Using one game’s result as a universal ranking

Cyberpunk 2077 and Red Dead Redemption 2 produced different margins and, at one setting, a reversed result. Use several games representative of your library and keep their settings identical.

Counting generated frames as rendered frames

Frame generation can raise the displayed FPS counter while the base rendering rate remains unchanged. Evaluate responsiveness, visual artifacts and the underlying native or upscaled FPS.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Comparing unlike laptop designs

Tom’s Guide also published a comparison involving an MSI Stealth A16 RTX 5060 and an Asus TUF A14 RTX 4060, but those machines differ in their complete configurations. Such results provide context, not a controlled GPU-only test.

Ignoring the 8 GB capacity ceiling

GDDR7 improves the memory technology in the 5060, yet both listed GPUs have 8 GB. Texture-heavy games can therefore create similar capacity pressure on each system.

What the available evidence can and cannot prove

The A14 comparison is valuable because it places both GPUs in the same laptop family and reports concrete game settings. It is still one pair of configurations, so it cannot establish an average advantage across every manufacturer, wattage, CPU, driver or cooling design. The FPS values should be used as examples of the range and behavior you may encounter, not as a guarantee for a particular retail model.

Notebookcheck broadens the picture by aggregating many systems and showing power variation, but an aggregated database mixes hardware and test conditions. Use it to verify that implementations differ, then find a review of the exact laptop you intend to buy. NVIDIA’s specifications establish feature and architecture differences, while its “double the performance” statement applies specifically to games using DLSS 4 Multi Frame Generation and should remain labeled as a manufacturer claim.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a purchase decision, the most reliable hierarchy is: exact-model independent testing first; documented power and cooling second; your resolution and game settings third; and GPU generation features fourth. That order prevents a favorable specification sheet from hiding a low-power design or an unsuitable display.

Final buying guidance

Choose the RTX 5060 laptop when the complete machine is similarly priced and configured, its tested power limit is competitive, and you will use its DLSS 4 features or benefit from its measured native advantage. Choose the RTX 4060 laptop when it is notably cheaper, better cooled or already fast enough for your games. Neither option guarantees a fixed percentage uplift, and neither increases the 8 GB VRAM capacity. The laptop around the GPU—not the GPU label alone—determines the performance you will actually experience.
