What the owner reported
The user, identified on Reddit as u/Maker_753, said he noticed that part of the RTX 4090 Founders Edition heatsink had “fallen off” after relocating his PC. Wccftech’s October 2, 2026 report describes images showing a detached cooler section and heatpipes that were no longer covered by that portion of the heatsink.

The report says the card was purchased in August 2023. The owner also said he discovered the problem just outside NVIDIA’s three-year warranty period and that repair specialists had quoted nearly $400. Those details are the owner’s account and have not been independently verified.

Is a detached RTX 4090 heatsink covered by warranty?
NVIDIA’s current US GeForce graphics-card warranty page explicitly includes the GeForce RTX 4090 Founders Edition. It states that coverage lasts three years from the purchase date and applies to manufacturing defects or hardware-component failures subject to the policy terms. If NVIDIA determines that a product is defective, the stated remedy is repair or replacement. Customers who believe they have a problem are directed to contact NVIDIA Customer Care.
Eligibility is decided case by case. The Reddit owner’s purchase date, warranty calculation, claim submission, and outcome have not been independently confirmed, so his experience should not be treated as NVIDIA’s ruling on every detached cooler.
NVIDIA’s warranty overview distinguishes Founders Edition cards from partner models: Founders Edition products are covered directly by NVIDIA, while GeForce cards purchased through board partners are generally handled by the relevant partner.
What to do if your Founders Edition cooler is loose
- Power the computer down. Do not continue testing a card with a visibly detached cooler section until its condition has been assessed.
- Document the condition. Take clear photographs of the cooler, heatpipes, screw locations, PCB, power connector and any marks that could help establish what happened.
- Gather purchase records. Keep the invoice, order confirmation, serial number and product details available for support.
- Contact the correct warranty channel. For a Founders Edition card, start with NVIDIA Customer Care and describe the detached component without asserting an unverified cause.
- Wait for an assessment before opening the card. Removing the cooler, applying adhesive or attempting a solder repair can affect warranty handling and may cause additional damage.
Can the RTX 4090 Founders Edition heatsink be repaired?
A repair may be possible in an individual case, but the available report does not verify a compatible replacement heatsink, an authorized service program, a successful repair or a standard price. The nearly $400 figure belongs to this owner’s account and is not a general repair-rate benchmark.

The report also mentions thermal epoxy as an idea discussed around the incident. That is not a validated repair method here. Adhesive cannot substitute for an inspection of the heatsink’s mounting points, heatpipe assembly, PCB and surrounding components, and an incorrect repair could complicate warranty service.

If NVIDIA declines coverage or the card is out of warranty, ask any independent repairer for a written scope and quote. Confirm that the technician will inspect the PCB and cooler, identify the replacement part, explain warranty consequences and show relevant experience with RTX 4090 Founders Edition cards before authorizing work.

NVIDIA’s RTX 4090 product information lists the card as a three-slot design and advises allowing room for its power cables. That is installation guidance, not evidence that a particular case position, cable arrangement or move caused this reported detachment.
The timing matters only as context: the owner noticed the damage after moving the PC. Without an independent inspection, it is not possible to distinguish transport stress from an earlier assembly problem, material failure, thermal cycling or another cause.
How significant is this report?
It is an anecdote involving one card. The owner reportedly could not find comparable accounts, and no source cited a statistic for RTX 4090 Founders Edition heatsink detachments, repair rates or failure frequency. That means the report cannot establish that the RTX 4090 FE has a widespread cooler problem.
Owners who find a loose heatsink should treat the physical damage seriously and seek an assessment, while avoiding conclusions about the entire product line from this single unverified incident.
