RTX 3090 Has No Display Output and the Screen Is Black: How to Diagnose It

If your RTX 3090 shows no display, first identify when the image disappears: before POST/BIOS, or only after the Windows logo. Then check the monitor connection, card seating and power before moving on to firmware or Windows troubleshooting. The timing points to different causes, so follow the matching checks below.

Is the screen black before POST or only after the Windows logo?

Note what appears during startup. If the display stays black before you can see the motherboard logo or enter BIOS, start with the monitor, cable, GPU seating and power. If POST and the Windows logo appear but the screen goes black as Windows loads, complete the physical checks first, then focus on Windows display settings and the graphics driver.

Check the monitor and display connection

  1. Make sure the monitor is powered on and set to the input used by the cable.
  2. Connect the display cable directly to an output on the RTX 3090, not to the motherboard’s video output.
  3. Reseat the cable at both ends. NVIDIA advises checking that both ends of the HDMI or DisplayPort cable are securely connected: NVIDIA Support’s connection troubleshooting guidance.
  4. Test with one monitor. If possible, swap in a known-good cable, try another output on the card, or connect a different monitor. Change one thing at a time so you can identify what changes the result.

The RTX 3090 Founders Edition has three DisplayPort connectors and one HDMI connector, according to NVIDIA’s specifications. Board-partner cards can differ; consult the manual for your exact model.

Reseat the RTX 3090 and verify its power connections

Shut down the PC and disconnect it from AC power before opening the case. Check that the card is fully seated in its PCIe slot and that every GPU power connector is firmly inserted. Use the instructions for your specific card: the Founders Edition adapter wiring is different from some partner-card arrangements.

Founders Edition: use two separate PCIe power cables

NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX 3090 User Guide instructs Founders Edition owners to connect two separate 8-pin PCI Express cables from the power supply to the included dual-8-pin adapter, then connect the adapter’s 12-pin plug to the card. Connect the monitor to the graphics card. Do not assume that a single cable with two plugs is equivalent to the two separate cables specified in the guide.

Check the power supply and cables

NVIDIA lists 750 W as the required system power for the RTX 3090 Founders Edition on its specifications page. This is NVIDIA’s published system-power requirement, not a guarantee that every PSU rated at 750 W will work in every PC; capacity, condition and cabling matter. A PSU that is undersized or connected incorrectly can prevent startup or contribute to shutdowns and black screens.

  • Confirm that the PSU has the required PCIe connectors and that they are fully seated.
  • Use the PSU’s own modular cables. Never substitute a modular cable from another PSU unless the manufacturer confirms it is compatible; the plug may fit while the wiring differs.
  • If your PSU or its cables fail these checks, assess them before considering a replacement. A PSU upgrade is relevant only if the current unit cannot meet the card’s requirements or provide the correct connections.

Try HDMI if a DisplayPort monitor shows no image

Some modern, high-resolution DisplayPort monitors can have firmware compatibility problems with GeForce RTX 30-series cards. NVIDIA recommends its GPU Firmware Update Tool for affected systems; its guidance specifically concerns modern high-resolution DisplayPort monitors used with GeForce RTX 30-series GPUs: NVIDIA’s GPU Firmware Update Tool guidance. MSI also documents cases in which DisplayPort 1.3/1.4 compatibility can cause no display before boot or stall startup: MSI’s DisplayPort compatibility guidance.

To isolate this branch, temporarily connect the monitor over HDMI or test a different monitor. If that restores the image, follow NVIDIA’s instructions for checking and applying the firmware update. Do not treat the tool as a universal fix for a black screen unrelated to DisplayPort compatibility.

If the image disappears only when Windows loads

When POST and the Windows logo are visible, but Windows itself goes black, use Windows recovery or Safe Mode to investigate display configuration and driver issues. Microsoft includes output misconfiguration, corrupted user profiles, and incompatible or incomplete updates among possible causes of blank screens: Microsoft’s black- or blank-screen troubleshooting guide.

  1. Enter Windows Recovery Environment and start in Safe Mode. If you cannot reach the sign-in screen, use Microsoft’s recovery instructions for your version of Windows.
  2. In Safe Mode, check whether Windows is sending the image to the expected display. If you use multiple monitors, disconnect extras while troubleshooting.
  3. Repair or reinstall the NVIDIA display driver. If the problem began after an update, use Windows recovery options to address the incompatible or incomplete update.
  4. Try a clean boot to see whether a startup app or service is interfering with display startup. Add devices and startup items back gradually if the display works.

If the display is black before POST, Windows Safe Mode and driver repair will not address the first failure point; return to the physical connection, GPU power and DisplayPort checks.

Use the result of each test to narrow the cause

Test result What it suggests Next check
No image before POST on any display The fault is occurring before Windows loads. Verify monitor input and cable, then card seating and GPU power. Try a different output or monitor.
HDMI works but DisplayPort does not A DisplayPort cable, output, monitor or firmware-compatibility issue is more likely. Try another DisplayPort cable or output; check NVIDIA’s RTX 30-series firmware guidance.
One monitor works but a multi-monitor setup does not The issue may involve an output, cable, monitor or display configuration. Reconnect displays one at a time and test each cable and output.
POST and Windows logo appear, then the screen goes black Windows display configuration, driver or update problems become more likely. Use recovery or Safe Mode, then check output settings and repair the display driver.
Known-good monitor and cable still show no image The display path is less likely to be the only cause. Recheck GPU seating and power, then test the card, PCIe slot or PSU with known-good parts if available.

Change one component at a time when swapping parts. If a properly powered, reseated card still produces no image before POST with a known-good display path, testing another PCIe slot or having the GPU, PSU and motherboard checked can help isolate a hardware fault.
