A counter is a situational advantage, not a guarantee: faction bonuses, upgrades, terrain, numbers, timing and the current patch can change the result.
What an RTS counter really means
A counter is a unit, combination or tactical response that is efficient against a particular opposing unit or army role under a specific game’s rules. The word does not mean “automatic win.” A nominal counter can lose when it arrives late, is badly outnumbered, lacks upgrades, is trapped in poor terrain or is asked to fight the wrong target.

Counter charts are also game-specific. The basic relationships in Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition are not the same as the beginner triangle presented for Age of Empires IV. A rule learned in one title should never be copied into another title without checking its current tooltips, technology tree and patch notes.
Think of a counter as a decision with five parts:
- Information: you know what the opponent is producing and when it can arrive.
- Interaction: your selected unit has a favorable relationship with that threat in this game.
- Scale: you can produce enough of the response before the next engagement.
- Economy: paying for the response does not leave your base unable to replace workers, buildings or essential upgrades.
- Execution: your army can reach and attack the intended targets instead of being neutralized by terrain or commands.
If one of these parts is missing, the “counter” may be correct on paper and still fail in the match.

A repeatable process for choosing a response
1. Scout the army, production and timing
Do not begin with the question “What beats cavalry?” Begin with “What is this player producing, from which buildings, and when will it arrive?” A few visible units can be a test force rather than the opponent’s main army. Look for completed or under-construction military production, extra production capacity, technology choices and the timing of the first attack.
In Age of Empires IV, the official beginner guidance explicitly recommends learning how an opponent intends to attack and producing units that reliably counter that force whenever possible. The same principle applies more broadly: scouting turns a counter chart into a decision instead of a guess.
Record three observations:
- Composition: which unit classes are present, and whether one class is becoming the majority.
- Production: how many buildings can sustain that army and whether the opponent is adding more.
- Timing: whether the threat is an immediate raid, a slow mass army or a transition designed to punish your first response.
2. Identify the dangerous role, not just the largest unit
The unit with the highest cost or most impressive model is not always the tactical problem. A fast unit may threaten workers and force you to split your army. A ranged unit may punish slow infantry before it reaches melee range. A cheap frontline unit may occupy your army while a second group attacks elsewhere.

Your first response should address the role that can endanger your plan, not merely mirror the opponent’s most visible unit.
3. Use the selected game’s counter relationships
Once the threat is identified, consult the game’s own unit descriptions, learning materials or current patch information. “Archer,” “spearman” and “cavalry” are not interchangeable categories across RTS titles. Even when two games use the same words, armor rules, attack bonuses, movement, production time and upgrades can differ.
Use a chart as a starting point, then check the details that determine whether the response is practical: bonus damage, range, speed, armor, population or supply use, building access and technology requirements. The chart tells you which interaction to seek; it does not tell you how many units you need or where to fight.
4. Test economic sustainability before committing
A response is only useful if your base can keep making it. Count the resources required for the unit, its production building and any essential upgrade. Then check whether the same workers are needed for houses, defensive structures, town-center production, technology or another resource.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The official Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition learning material emphasizes that powerful units often cost gold and that available gold declines over a match. It presents food-only or food-and-wood-only units as ways to offset expensive armies or answer an opponent without competing for as much gold. The practical lesson is not to avoid gold units; it is to avoid a counter whose cost profile your economy cannot maintain.
5. Open the right production and make enough units
One counter unit from a single building rarely changes an engagement against a growing army. Add production when the economy can support it, queue the response continuously and keep scouting while it builds. If the opponent has several production buildings and you have one, a theoretically favorable matchup can disappear through sheer replacement speed.
Do not cancel every other need automatically. Keep enough worker production, housing or supply, defensive infrastructure and scouting to avoid losing to a second threat. A counter transition should be a plan for the next several minutes, not an emergency queue that leaves your base unable to function.

6. Deliver the counter with appropriate positioning
Move the response to a location where its strengths matter. Ranged units need room and protection; slower melee units need a path to contact; fragile units should not be the first models through a choke point. Use terrain, walls, ramps, buildings and vision to prevent the opponent from choosing the engagement for you.
Recommended Free Tools
Positioning can change the value of a unit without changing its statistics. A counter that wins in open ground may be unable to reach its target through a narrow approach. Conversely, a defensive position can buy the time needed to complete another production cycle.
7. Re-scout and adjust after the first exchange
The first counter often causes a transition. An opponent who sees your anti-cavalry force may add ranged support; a player facing archers may add a frontline; a failed raid may become a siege or technology push. Scout again after the initial engagement and decide whether to continue the same production, add a support class or change plans entirely.
Counter relationships differ by game
The following table separates the official beginner rules cited for each title. It is deliberately not a universal RTS chart.
| Game | Official beginner relationship or control point | How to use it | What is not established here |
|---|---|---|---|
| Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition | Archer-line units counter most infantry; spearman-line units counter most cavalry; cavalry counter most archers. | Use the relationship to choose a broad response, then account for cost, gold availability, upgrades, numbers and terrain. | No universal unit ratio, win rate or claim that every faction’s version performs identically. |
| Age of Empires IV | Archer counters spearman; spearman counters cavalry; cavalry counters archer. | Scout the opponent, add production for the reliable counter where possible and practice the interaction with terrain awareness. | No claim that the triangle covers every unit, faction, technology or current patch situation. |
| StarCraft II | The cited Blizzard beginner control guide explains that a Move order ignores enemy units along the route, while targeting an enemy unit issues an attack. | Use the distinction to make sure a response actually engages the intended target during a fight. | The cited material does not provide a current comprehensive matchup chart or numerical efficiency comparison. |
Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition: broad counters plus resource discipline
The official Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition learning page presents these rules of thumb:
“Archer-line counter most Infantry”; “Spearman-line counters most cavalry”; “Cavalry counter most archers.”
These are broad classes, not a promise that every archer defeats every infantry unit or that every cavalry unit defeats every archer in every situation. Treat them as the first filter when scouting a composition.
Against an infantry-heavy force
If scouting shows that infantry is the opponent’s main mass, the official rule of thumb points toward the archer line. Protect the ranged units from direct contact, keep enough distance to fire and avoid allowing the infantry to surround them. If the opponent adds a fast or ranged support unit, your next decision may be a mixed composition rather than more of the original counter alone.
Against cavalry
The spearman line is the broad answer identified by the official guide. Spearmen are most useful when they can stand between cavalry and vulnerable workers or ranged units. Use buildings, walls or narrow approaches to reduce the cavalry’s ability to run around the formation. Continue scouting for ranged support, because a counter designed for cavalry can be exposed if it fights unsupported in the open.
Against archers
The guide identifies cavalry as the broad counter to most archers. Speed can let cavalry choose when to engage, threaten the archer’s retreat and attack exposed production or workers. Do not assume that speed alone solves the problem: concentrated fire, defensive terrain and additional frontline units can still make a direct charge unfavorable.

Make the resource profile part of the matchup
The same official material warns that strong units often consume gold and that gold becomes harder to access as a match progresses. A food-only or food-and-wood-only response can preserve an expensive gold stockpile for the units that truly need it, or let you continue producing after a resource line is contested. Choose the counter you can replace, not merely the one with the best theoretical interaction.
Age of Empires IV: a different beginner triangle
World’s Edge Studio’s 2021 beginner guidance gives a separate triangle:
“Archer counters Spearman”; “Spearman counters Cavalry”; “Cavalry counters Archer.”
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
That relationship must not be merged with the Age of Empires II chart. In particular, the role of the archer in the two beginner explanations is different: one guide describes archers as a broad answer to infantry, while the other describes archers as an answer to spearmen.
Scout before choosing production
The same Age of Empires IV guidance advises players to learn how the opponent plans to attack and, whenever possible, create military production buildings that make units which reliably counter the enemy. In practical terms, do not add a building because it is part of a memorized opening. Add it because your scouting shows a threat that the building can answer before the next engagement.
Use the triangle as a first response
When the opponent is clearly committing to spearmen, the beginner relationship points toward archers. When cavalry is the threat, spearmen are the stated response. When archers are the threat, cavalry is the stated response. The match still depends on numbers, upgrades, civilization or faction rules, terrain, reinforcements and whether the opponent adds a second unit type.
Practice countering and terrain together
The official quickstart directs new players to the Art of War challenges, including Basic Combat, which teaches counters and terrain. This pairing matters: recognizing the favorable unit interaction is only half the skill. You also need to learn where the units can fight effectively and how terrain changes the approach.

StarCraft II: execution matters even when the matchup is known
The cited Blizzard basic-controls guide is useful here for a narrow but important reason: it distinguishes movement from an attack instruction. A Move order ignores enemy units along the route, while targeting an enemy unit issues an attack. That means an army can pass by a threat or arrive in the wrong place if you give it a movement command when you intended it to engage.
Apply the control distinction deliberately
When repositioning, use a movement command if the goal is to reach a location without stopping to fight every unit on the path. When the goal is to damage a specific enemy, target that enemy so the command expresses the intended action. Confirm the result visually; a command that looks plausible on the map may produce a different engagement once units begin moving.
Do not import an Age of Empires chart
The control guidance does not establish a current StarCraft II matchup table. Unit counters in StarCraft II depend on the race, unit, technology, map, patch and composition. Use the game’s own tooltips, current learning resources and match-specific scouting rather than treating either Age of Empires triangle as a StarCraft II rule.

How to build an army composition instead of a single-unit answer
Most successful responses are compositions with a primary counter and enough support to keep it functioning. The exact units depend on the title and patch, but the planning questions are consistent.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Choose a primary counter
Start with the unit that directly interacts favorably with the main threat under the selected game’s rules. Queue it continuously and estimate how many production buildings are required to match the opponent’s growth.
Add protection for its weakness
Every counter has a condition that can break it: slow movement, poor durability, short range, vulnerability to a second class or dependence on a particular resource. Add support only when it solves a demonstrated weakness. A mixed army that cannot be produced or controlled is worse than a smaller, coherent force.
Keep a response to the likely transition
Scouting should look beyond the first unit. If the opponent’s production or technology indicates a transition, reserve the resources and building access needed to answer it. This may mean delaying an upgrade, adding a second production type or keeping a mobile group near vulnerable workers.
Match production to replacement speed
Compare your production capacity with the opponent’s visible capacity. A favorable interaction loses value when your first group dies and the opponent replaces its army twice as quickly. Add buildings only when your resource income can keep them active; otherwise you have paid for capacity that produces nothing.
Economy, technology and timing checks
Before committing to a counter, run this short audit:
- Resource availability: Is the required food, wood, gold or other resource income already established?
- One-time costs: Do you need a new production building, prerequisite technology or housing before the unit can appear?
- Recurring costs: Can the economy keep the queue running after the first batch?
- Opportunity cost: What worker production, defense or technology will be delayed?
- Arrival time: Will the first useful group exist before the opponent’s next attack?
- Replacement: After a fight, can you rebuild faster than the opponent or at least trade efficiently enough to hold?
Timing can outweigh a chart advantage. A counter that arrives after workers, production or a key position has been lost may be correct but too late to save the game. Conversely, a smaller force that reaches a defensive location before the enemy can buy the time needed for a second production cycle.
Positioning, terrain and target selection
Fight where the counter can connect
Fast units need room to maneuver; slow units need a route that does not let the enemy bypass them; ranged units need line of sight and protection. Before engaging, identify the path your response will take and the location where the opposing army can force contact.
Use terrain as part of the counter
The Age of Empires IV quickstart pairs counter lessons with terrain for a reason. Chokepoints can limit how many enemy units attack at once, high ground or obstacles can affect access and vision, and narrow approaches can prevent cavalry from circling exposed targets. Terrain does not create a universal bonus; its value depends on the game’s rules and the units involved.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Protect the unit that performs the counter
Do not send the counter into the enemy’s preferred target order. Keep ranged units behind a frontline, prevent fast units from pulling them away from support and avoid splitting the army so widely that each group can be defeated separately. If the counter must chase, decide whether the chase protects your economy or merely removes the army from the place that needs it.
Best Value
Give commands that match the objective
Command language is game-specific. In StarCraft II, the Blizzard guide’s distinction between Move and targeting an enemy is directly relevant to whether the army engages. Other RTS titles may use different command names or behavior. Read the selected game’s control documentation and watch the first seconds after issuing an order to verify that units are doing what you intended.
Why a correct counter can fail
You scouted the first army but not the transition
An opponent can show one unit to draw your response and then add the unit that defeats it. Re-scout production and technology after every major exchange instead of treating the first sighting as permanent information.
You matched the label but not the scale
“Counter” describes an interaction, not a guaranteed unit-count ratio. A small response cannot defeat a much larger force simply because its class is favorable. Retreat to a defensible position, keep producing and engage only when your numbers and terrain support the interaction.
Your economy cannot sustain the answer
A gold-intensive response may stall when the opponent controls or exhausts accessible gold. A production plan that consumes every resource can also stop worker production or housing. Recheck the resource profile and consider whether a food- or wood-heavy option in that game can maintain pressure while preserving scarce resources.
The army is fighting in the wrong place
Open ground, a choke point, a wall, a ramp or a base entrance can produce very different engagements. Move the army before contact when possible, and make the opponent attack into the position that supports your response.
The command did not express the intended action
An army told to move may ignore enemies or pass a target, while an attack instruction may stop the army to fight. This behavior is explicitly highlighted in the cited StarCraft II controls guidance; other games require their own command checks.
A practical comparison framework
When comparing two possible responses, evaluate both against the same four axes:
Recommended Free Tools
| Axis | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Game and patch | Which title, edition, faction and current patch define the interaction? Is the chart still current? |
| Unit role and interaction | What threat does the unit answer, and what added unit could neutralize it? |
| Cost and production access | What resources, buildings, technologies and queue time are required? Can your economy keep producing? |
| Position and control | Where will the fight happen, how will the unit reach its target and which command makes it engage correctly? |
This framework is more reliable than asking which unit is “strongest.” A unit that is powerful but unavailable in time, unaffordable or unable to reach its target is not the best answer to the present attack.
How to practice counter decisions
Use the selected game’s own tutorials and controlled matches to isolate one decision at a time. In Age of Empires IV, the official quickstart points to the Art of War challenges, including Basic Combat for counters and terrain. Repeat a scenario until you can identify the threat, open the required production, field the response and choose a favorable position without pausing to recall a chart.
For any RTS, review the replay or post-game information with four questions:
- When did I first receive reliable information about the army?
- How long did it take to produce the first useful counter group?
- Did the fight occur where the response was designed to work?
- What did the opponent add after seeing my answer?
These questions turn a loss into a timing, economy or execution diagnosis instead of a vague conclusion that the unit “does not counter.”
Field checklist before the next engagement
- Scout: confirm the opponent’s main units, production buildings and attack timing.
- Classify: identify the role that threatens your economy, position or army.
- Verify: use the current rules for the exact game, edition, faction and patch.
- Fund: check resources, production capacity, prerequisites and replacement income.
- Position: move to terrain that lets the response reach its target and protects its weakness.
- Command: issue an order that matches the intended action, then watch the engagement begin.
- Adapt: re-scout after contact and change production if the opponent transitions.
Final takeaway
There is no single RTS counter chart that works across games. Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition teaches one set of broad relationships, Age of Empires IV teaches a different beginner triangle, and the cited StarCraft II material emphasizes making the correct movement or attack command rather than supplying a universal matchup table. The dependable method is always the same: gather information, select the response permitted by that game’s rules, make it economically sustainable, and fight where your units can execute their advantage.
