A moving average can make a price chart easier to read; the Relative Strength Index (RSI) can show how recent gains compare with recent losses. Used together, they offer two different views of price action—not a guaranteed signal or proof that a trade will be profitable.
Why pair a trend filter with a momentum indicator?
Price charts can be noisy: short-term moves may obscure the broader direction. The Star Wars framing in the original guide is a light metaphor for bringing order to that noise. In practical terms, a moving average smooths prices, while RSI summarizes recent momentum. Each describes past price behavior in a different way; neither establishes what happens next.

What a simple moving average tells you
A simple moving average (SMA) is the arithmetic mean of a fixed number of recent observations. For a 50-period SMA, add the latest 50 prices included by the chart’s calculation and divide by 50. As new observations arrive, the window advances and the oldest observation drops out.
The average smooths short-term fluctuation, but it also responds to the chosen window. A 50-period SMA is an example used in the original guide, not a proven best setting. “Period” means the chart interval: on a daily chart, 50 periods usually refers to 50 daily observations; on another timeframe, it refers to that chart’s bars. Choose the window for the timeframe and purpose of the analysis, and be consistent when comparing results.

What RSI measures—and what 70/30 means
RSI compares average gains with average losses over a lookback and scales that comparison from 0 to 100. A 14-period lookback is a common or default setting in charting references such as TradingView’s RSI documentation and StockCharts’ RSI explanation.
Under the conventional Wilder interpretation, readings above 70 are described as overbought and readings below 30 as oversold. These are descriptive thresholds, not instructions to sell or buy and not promises of a reversal. In a strong directional move, RSI can remain near an extreme while price continues in that direction. Read the indicator in context rather than treating a threshold crossing as a forecast.

How an SMA and RSI can be read together
The combination is best understood as two separate questions: what broad direction does the smoothed price suggest, and what has recent momentum been doing? For example, a trader might use price relative to an SMA as a trend filter and then inspect RSI for momentum context. That is an illustrative workflow, not a validated strategy.
The original guide proposes particular entry and exit conditions, but the cited material does not establish that those rules are profitable. A trend filter and oscillator can help organize a chart; they cannot by themselves account for execution, transaction costs, risk, or changing market conditions.

Wilder RSI versus a rolling-average variant
Wilder’s commonly used RSI calculation smooths average gains and losses recursively after the initial averages are established. For a 14-period RSI, the next average gain is calculated as (prior average gain × 13 + current gain) / 14; average loss is updated in the same way. StockCharts traces RSI to J. Welles Wilder Jr.’s 1978 book New Concepts in Technical Trading Systems and notes that history length and smoothing can affect displayed values.
The sample function in the original guide instead calculates a rolling arithmetic mean for each 14-period window, then describes the result as following Wilder’s classic formula. Those are not identical methods. To implement Wilder RSI, use the recursive update above after initialization. If using a simple rolling mean instead, label it as a rolling-average RSI variant rather than Wilder RSI. Platforms may also differ because of initialization and the amount of historical data used.

What to specify before evaluating a signal
A meaningful test needs enough detail for someone else to reproduce it. Before drawing conclusions about an SMA/RSI rule, document:

- The instrument and the source of its price data.
- The chart timeframe and the number of periods used for each indicator.
- Whether the trend measure is an SMA or an exponentially weighted moving average (EMA).
- The RSI formula, initialization method, and warm-up history.
- Exact entry and exit rules, including how signals are handled when conditions conflict.
- Transaction costs and risk controls included in the test.
- The test period and whether results were evaluated on data not used to design the rule.
Changing the timeframe, moving-average weighting, RSI implementation, or thresholds changes the analysis. The cited references explain indicator calculations and interpretation, but do not provide a fair performance comparison among these strategy variations. Without a documented test that accounts for costs and risk, a chart example is not evidence of a repeatable edge.
