There is no single engine RPM that every car should show at 20 mph. The reading depends on which gear is engaged, the transmission and final-drive ratios, and the tires’ rolling circumference. An automatic’s torque-converter behavior can also change the tachometer reading. To estimate your vehicle’s RPM, use its actual drivetrain specifications rather than a generic figure.
Why 20 mph does not determine engine RPM
Road speed tells you how quickly the wheels are turning, but not how quickly the engine is turning. The transmission gear ratio and final-drive ratio link those speeds; tire rolling circumference determines how far the vehicle travels with each wheel revolution. Changing gears can therefore change engine RPM while road speed stays at 20 mph.

In a traditional automatic transmission, torque-converter slip can make engine speed differ from the idealized calculation. Tire size and actual rolling circumference matter, too. Without a specific vehicle, gear, and tire setup, a universal RPM answer would be misleading.
Calculate an estimate for your vehicle
With speed in miles per hour and tire rolling circumference in metres, calculate wheel speed first, then multiply by the transmission and final-drive ratios:

Wheel RPM = speed in mph × 1609.344 ÷ 60 ÷ tire rolling circumference in metres
Engine RPM = wheel RPM × selected transmission gear ratio × final-drive ratio

For 20 mph, substitute 20 for speed. The 1609.344 factor converts miles to metres. The gear ratio must be for the gear actually engaged, and the final-drive ratio must match your vehicle’s configuration. MotorMath explains the formula and its assumptions in its RPM calculator guide.

Measure tire rolling circumference
A loaded tire’s rolling circumference may not match a measurement taken while it is stationary. For a practical estimate, MotorMath suggests measuring the distance the vehicle travels over one full tire rotation:
- Set tire pressure to the normal operating pressure and, if possible, use a typical vehicle load.
- On level ground, mark the tire and the corresponding point on the ground.
- Roll the vehicle forward until the tire completes exactly one full rotation.
- Measure the distance traveled. Use that distance as the rolling circumference, converted to metres if needed.
This measurement helps refine the tire input; it does not replace the transmission and final-drive specifications.

Why the tachometer may not match the estimate
The calculation assumes no tire slip or torque-converter slip and a fully engaged selected gear. Real driving can depart from those conditions. Automatic-transmission behavior, tire pressure and wear, the difference between measured and actual rolling circumference, and speedometer calibration can all affect the comparison between calculated and observed RPM.

Use the vehicle’s tachometer to see the engine speed in the moment, and consult the correct service information for vehicle-specific specifications. The calculator’s result is an educational estimate, not a determination that a particular RPM is safe or efficient. Speed and RPM alone also cannot establish whether a drivetrain has a fault.

Keep units consistent
The formula above uses rolling circumference in metres. Another commonly used form uses tire diameter in inches and a conversion factor of 336, but diameter and circumference are different measurements. Do not put tire diameter into the circumference formula or combine metres and inches in the same calculation.
