Yes—some RPGs record the consequence of a conversation even when you fast-forward through its words. A skipped exchange can still apply a skill result, change companion approval, set a faction flag, trigger a romance, commit you to a quest path or make an ending route unavailable. Baldur’s Gate 3, Mass Effect Legendary Edition, Fallout: New Vegas, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and Undertale are especially risky because dialogue is part of their game-state system, not just presentation.
Skipping the text does not skip the consequence
A fast-forward command usually controls what is displayed, not whether the game processes the conversation. The important moment may be the response you select, a hidden flag set when the exchange begins, or a check resolved using the character who initiated the conversation. If you skip before understanding those signals, you can make a permanent-looking choice without knowing what it controls.

Dialogue is most dangerous to skip when it contains one of these state changes:
- A skill or proficiency check: the game may test the speaker’s abilities and open or close options.
- Companion approval: a response can alter how a companion reacts later or whether that character follows a particular personal path.
- Faction reputation or allegiance: accepting an offer can make another group hostile or remove a competing objective.
- Romance or personal commitments: seemingly casual answers can serve as relationship triggers.
- Route or ending flags: an encounter choice can define which quests, fights, scenes or endings remain available.
Bethesda Support explicitly notes that, after character creation, most conversations and cutscenes can be skipped from the Character Creation menu. That convenience is useful for repeat playthroughs, but it also illustrates the risk: a game can continue applying its state changes while the explanation is being skipped.

The five RPGs where dialogue deserves your full attention
Baldur’s Gate 3: the speaker and the response both matter
Larian Studios describes Baldur’s Gate 3 as a game in which “every choice you make drives your story forward,” with each decision leaving a mark on the world. Its systems make that literal. The developer’s Community Update #22 says conversation outcomes can depend on the proficiencies of the character who initiates the exchange, and that the long-term story is defined by choices and their consequences.
That means skipping can hide two separate decisions: the option you are selecting and the party member whose abilities are being used. A conversation begun by one character may produce a different result from the same conversation begun by another. Companions also react to player choices, so an answer can influence both the immediate scene and a later personal outcome.

The scale is substantial. Larian’s 2023 feature page lists more than 174 hours of cinematics and seven Origin heroes with branching outcomes. You do not need to read every line to finish the game, but slow down when a dialogue wheel shows a check, a companion is present, an NPC asks for allegiance, or a response sounds irreversible. Those are the moments most likely to create a flag that a skip conceals.

Mass Effect Legendary Edition: decisions can survive three games
Mass Effect Legendary Edition has the clearest example of persistence beyond a single save. Decisions transfer across the complete trilogy, so an answer in an earlier game can affect which characters or resources are available much later. The danger is cumulative rather than theatrical. A conversation may not announce that it has changed the finale; it may alter a relationship, a mission outcome or the pool of assets that is carried into the next game. When importing a save, the effect is no longer confined to the scene you skipped. Read conversations involving squadmates, political decisions and major moral choices, especially when the game presents two clearly opposed answers.
Fallout: New Vegas: faction conversations define the map’s power balance
In Fallout: New Vegas, dialogue is tightly connected to faction reputation and allegiance. GamesRadar describes factions reacting to what the player does and identifies four endings, each providing a different gameplay experience. An offer to work with a faction is therefore more than flavor text: accepting it can change how other groups treat you and which objectives become available.

Obsidian designer Joshua Sawyer’s session listed in the GDC Vault focuses on branching conversation architecture and player agency in New Vegas. That design emphasis explains why reputation conversations and allegiance offers deserve a pause. Before selecting a commitment, check the speaker, the faction named in the response and any warning that the choice could affect other groups. A skipped line can contain the only plain-language explanation of what you are joining or opposing.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt uses dialogue trees to alter world state and the fate of characters. The cited game reference describes decisions that can produce 36 possible endings affecting characters; that number is a secondary-source figure rather than a primary statistic, so it should be treated as an approximate guide to the game’s branching scale, not as a guarantee that every player will encounter 36 wholly separate finales.

The practical rule is simple: do not rush major personal, political or romance conversations. A response can resolve a dispute, determine who supports a later plan or change a relationship without displaying a prominent “ending path changed” notice. Read the context before choosing, particularly when Geralt is asked to take sides or make a promise.
Undertale: small encounter choices can lock routes
Undertale is the most direct answer to “Can one conversation lock me out of an ending?” GamesRadar reports that choices made during encounters can change later fights, dialogue and endings, and that routes can lock one another out. The decision may happen through an encounter command rather than a conventional conversation tree, but the result is the same: an apparently minor action can define the route that follows.
Because the game’s feedback is often delayed, do not assume that a harmless-looking encounter option is cosmetic. If you are trying to experience a particular route, treat every encounter decision as potentially consequential and keep a separate save before experimenting.

These games all make dialogue matter, but they differ in how far the effect travels and how easy it is to notice.

A spoiler-light method for deciding when to stop skipping
- Keep skipping routine exposition only. Travel chatter or already-understood instructions are lower risk than a new request, bargain or accusation.
- Pause at checks and named systems. Read any line mentioning a skill, proficiency, reputation, approval, allegiance, romance or a consequence for another group.
- Read the final response options. The consequence is often encoded in the selectable answer even when the preceding explanation is easy to miss.
- Save before a commitment. Make a manual save before accepting a faction offer, resolving a major dispute, confirming a romance-related answer or choosing an unusual encounter action.
- Use the initiating character deliberately. In Baldur’s Gate 3, the character who starts the conversation can affect the available result through proficiencies.
- Keep long-term saves separate. In Mass Effect, preserve the imported trilogy save you want to carry forward; in route-based games, keep a pre-decision save before testing an alternative.
Which conversations should you always read?
- Any scene that offers membership, allegiance or cooperation with a faction.
- Any exchange involving a companion’s personal goal or approval.
- Any dialogue that presents a skill check or is initiated by a different party member than usual.
- Any personal, political or romance decision in The Witcher 3.
- Every significant encounter choice in Undertale when you are pursuing a specific route.
- Any decision in Mass Effect that affects a squadmate, a major mission or a moral alignment, because the consequences may transfer to later games.
The useful distinction is not “never skip dialogue.” It is “never skip a decision whose state you cannot identify.” In these five RPGs, the words are the warning label for systems that may continue running after the text disappears.
