Party approval, loyalty quests, and romance are related systems, but they do different jobs. Approval or affinity is the ongoing signal that reacts to what you say and do. A loyalty or personal quest turns that relationship into a character-specific test, often with a practical reward. Romance adds exclusive dialogue and story gates on top of the relationship model. The best system depends on whether you value transparency, consequential personal stories, or broad romance choice.

What the three companion systems actually measure

Party approval and affinity

Approval is a running relationship signal. It changes as you make dialogue choices, resolve quests, choose sides, fight for a faction, or otherwise act in ways a companion supports or rejects. A visible meter is common, but it is not universal: some role-playing games show a number, some use labels or categories, and some reveal the relationship only through dialogue, scenes, and quest availability.

In Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3), approval changes can affect later conversations, persuasion difficulty, personal-quest outcomes, romance thresholds, and whether a companion remains willing to travel with you. The BG3 Wiki lists typical event changes of ±1, ±5, or ±10 for small, medium, and large events, with a maximum companion approval value of 100 (figures reported in 2026). Those numbers describe BG3 specifically; they are not a standard scale for every RPG.

Bethesda’s support guidance describes affinity more broadly. Depending on the title, you can improve it by completing quests while the companion is active, finishing a unique personal quest, talking with the character regularly, using the Paramour aid item, or equipping the Leadership Social skill. This is an activity-based model rather than a single universal rule, and the exact options vary by Bethesda game.

Loyalty and personal quests

A loyalty quest is a companion-centered mission built around a concrete problem from that character’s history, values, obligations, or fears. It asks you to do more than accumulate points: you must decide how to handle a situation that matters specifically to the companion.

The quest can deepen the relationship through its story, but it may also change the character mechanically. A scholarly analysis of role-playing-game design identifies the Mass Effect series as a clear example: loyalty missions convert relationship progress into hidden ability unlocks. The mission therefore has two stakes—what happens to the character and what the character can do in later combat. The exact reward and conditions depend on the installment, so a specific ability should not be generalized across the trilogy.

Romance options

Romance normally adds another layer of dialogue and quest gates to approval or affinity. A high relationship alone may not be enough; you may also need to choose a particular response, complete a companion scene, or reach a point in the story where the romance can advance.

BG3 uses companion-specific approval thresholds for starting or continuing romances. Its system makes romance part of the same reactive relationship web as ordinary party interactions, so approval earned in one part of the game can affect later romantic conversations.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard uses flirtatious quips, siding with a companion, accompanying them on quests, gifts, and relationship status to build romance. Electronic Arts’ 2026 romance guide says all seven companions are possible romantic partners. You can pursue multiple companions initially, but the story eventually requires a commitment to one. That rule belongs to Veilguard; it should not be applied to every Dragon Age game.

How the systems work together in major examples

Baldur’s Gate 3: transparent approval and party reactivity

BG3 is the clearest example of approval as a continuously reactive system. Dialogue, quests, combat decisions, and faction choices can all produce approval or disapproval. Because the signal is tied to many kinds of play, a companion is responding to your overall approach rather than to one isolated conversation.

The practical effect is broader than a romance flag. Approval can change what a companion says, how difficult a persuasion attempt becomes, how a personal quest resolves, and whether the character is prepared to remain in the party. A low relationship can therefore become a party-management problem, not merely a missed flirtation.

The transparency has a trade-off. When a game exposes numerical changes, you can understand the immediate result of a choice, but you may also start optimizing every conversation for points. Larian Studios described BG3 as aiming for “authentic, reactive relationships” from the first meeting onward, while lead writer Sarah Baylus emphasized that the player character remains the central character in a Dungeons & Dragons-style game. In practice, the approval model supports that agency: companions react strongly, but the game does not require you to agree with them at every turn.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard: gifts, flirtation, and a commitment point

Veilguard presents romance as an intentional progression rather than a single end-of-game switch. Flirtatious dialogue establishes interest; supporting the companion in decisions and joining them on quests reinforces the bond; gifts provide another relationship input. The ability to explore multiple romances early lets you learn which dynamic fits your character, while the later commitment choice gives the final relationship greater narrative clarity.

Its design emphasizes identity and commitment as much as approval tracking. The important question is not simply “What is my score?” but “Which relationship am I prepared to make exclusive?” Because all seven companions are romanceable according to Electronic Arts’ 2026 guide, the system offers broad choice within that eventual one-partner commitment.

Mass Effect: loyalty as a mechanical contract

Mass Effect is a useful comparison because the loyalty mission itself can determine a companion’s combat potential. The mission is a test of whether you understand and support the character, and its outcome can unlock hidden abilities. This makes loyalty more concrete than a background approval value: success can be felt in later encounters.

Romance is layered onto the companion arc, but the exact romance gates, mission requirements, and consequences differ by installment. Treating “the Mass Effect romance system” as one unchanging rule can lead to incorrect advice; check the specific game before relying on a particular condition.

Bethesda’s affinity approach: many small inputs

Bethesda’s support guidance describes affinity as something you cultivate through repeated contact and useful behavior. Keep the companion active during quests, speak with them, complete a unique personal quest when one exists, and use the Paramour aid item or Leadership Social skill where the title supports those tools.

This approach can feel natural because it rewards ordinary play rather than requiring a single loyalty chapter. It can also be less legible than BG3’s explicit approval changes. Since the guidance covers a broader family of systems, title-specific rules—whether romance exists, how much each activity matters, and what a threshold unlocks—must be checked in the individual game.

Can you disagree with a companion and keep them loyal?

Often, yes. A relationship system is not the same as a requirement to approve every opinion. In a game such as BG3, a single disapproving action is one event in a larger history of choices. If you repeatedly support a companion’s priorities, complete their personal content, and handle major conflicts in ways they can accept, one disagreement need not end the relationship.

That flexibility has limits. Some decisions carry larger approval changes than ordinary banter, and systems that allow companions to leave can turn sustained conflict into a real party consequence. The safest way to preserve a relationship is to distinguish between a tactical disagreement and a decision that directly violates the companion’s core objective. If you intend to reject a request, speak with the companion afterward and finish available personal content rather than assuming the relationship is permanently lost.

Games with hidden or label-based affinity require more attention to reactions than to a visible score. Watch for changes in dialogue, new or missing personal scenes, altered quest availability, and direct statements about trust. Those signals can matter even when no number is displayed.

A practical way to manage companion relationships

  1. Choose a relationship goal. Decide whether you want a broad, cooperative party, one companion’s loyalty, or a specific romance. The goal determines which conflicts are worth accepting.
  2. Keep the relevant companion present. In affinity systems that reward active-party participation, take the character on quests where their perspective is likely to matter. Bethesda’s guidance explicitly identifies active-party questing as one way to build affinity.
  3. Talk after major events. Conversations can reveal whether a companion approved, lost trust, or has a personal problem that needs attention. Regular dialogue is also one of the documented Bethesda affinity inputs.
  4. Complete personal content promptly. A loyalty or personal quest is usually more consequential than routine approval events. It can change the story and, in the Mass Effect model, unlock a hidden ability.
  5. Read romance gates as separate conditions. A high approval value does not guarantee a romance. Look for the companion-specific dialogue or quest scene that begins or advances it; BG3 explicitly uses companion-specific thresholds.
  6. Use gifts or aid items only when the title supports them. Veilguard includes gifts as a romance input. Bethesda’s guidance mentions the Paramour aid item and Leadership Social skill. Neither mechanic should be assumed in an unrelated RPG.
  7. Save before irreversible commitments. Veilguard eventually locks the player into one romance, and other games may make a major faction or personal-quest decision permanent. A separate save lets you explore consequences without replaying the entire campaign.

What happens when the relationship goes badly?

The consequence depends on the game’s design. A minor failure may change one line of dialogue. A larger failure can make a persuasion check harder, close a romance, alter a personal-quest outcome, or cause a companion to leave the party. BG3 explicitly ties approval to several of these outcomes, including the possibility of departure.

Do not treat a missed romance scene as proof that the whole companion arc is over. First check whether the game uses a threshold, a required dialogue response, a personal quest, or a commitment decision. In Veilguard, for example, an early relationship can remain exploratory until the later commitment point. In a loyalty-mission system, the decisive moment may be the mission’s resolution rather than the number of friendly conversations before it.

Which RPG has the best companion approval system?

There is no universal winner because the systems optimize different experiences.

  • Choose BG3’s model if you want to see how individual choices affect companions and to feel those reactions in dialogue, persuasion, quests, romance, and party membership.
  • Choose Veilguard’s model if you want many romance possibilities, gift-giving and flirtation as clear relationship inputs, and an explicit eventual commitment to one partner.
  • Choose the Mass Effect loyalty model if you want a personal quest to have a direct gameplay payoff rather than remaining purely narrative.
  • Choose a Bethesda-style affinity model if you prefer relationships that grow through regular adventuring, conversation, personal missions, and supportive tools instead of one dominant meter.

The most satisfying systems combine all three layers: a relationship that reacts to everyday behavior, a personal quest that tests what the bond means, and romance that has its own clearly communicated gates. The key distinction is to judge each layer on its purpose rather than asking whether one numerical meter is “better” in isolation.

Why the distinction matters when choosing or playing an RPG

Calling every companion feature an “approval system” hides important differences. A visible score tells you how the game records the relationship, but not whether the relationship has a meaningful story test. A loyalty quest can be emotionally powerful yet mechanically shallow, or it can unlock abilities and change how you build a party. Romance can be inclusive and flexible, but still require a final commitment that changes the shape of the campaign.

When comparing games, ask three concrete questions: What actions change the relationship? What mission or decision proves the relationship? What does romance add, and when does it become exclusive? Those answers reveal far more than the presence or absence of an approval bar.
