What are you choosing between?
These are different platform releases, not two ways to run the same edition. The PS5 version is a remake by PlayStation Studios and Bluepoint Games, described by PlayStation as rebuilt from the ground up. The original game is available on PS3; PlayStation also says it can be played through PlayStation Now in supported regions, but that wording does not establish availability in every region or current subscription-catalog terms. PlayStation’s product page identifies the PS5 release and its listed editions.

The original launched in Japan in February 2009, according to PlayStation, while the remake launched with PS5 in November 2020. Those dates mark distinct releases, rather than a simple graphics upgrade that keeps every element identical.
What does the PS5 remake offer?
Documented console features
PlayStation lists 4K Mode, High Frame Rate Mode, fast loading, haptic feedback and Tempest 3D AudioTech with compatible headphones. A compatible 4K TV or display is required for 4K resolution gameplay. The consulted product information does not give a numeric frame-rate target for High Frame Rate Mode, so it does not support calling the mode a specific FPS or promising native 4K in every mode.

How closely does it follow the original?
Gavin Moore, the remake’s creative director, described the team’s aim as preserving the original’s story, gameplay and level design while rebuilding its art, sound and music. That is the studio’s stated intent, not independent proof that every artistic or mechanical detail is identical. In Moore’s September 16, 2020, PlayStation.Blog post, he wrote that the goal was “to remain true to the vision of the original classic – its story, gameplay and level design.”
Online play
PlayStation describes online play as optional and says online multiplayer requires PlayStation Plus. The present status of the original PS3 game’s multiplayer servers is not established here, so do not choose the PS3 route on the assumption that its online features currently work.

What does playing the PS3 original through RPCS3 involve?
Compatibility is encouraging, but not a performance promise
RPCS3’s compatibility list classifies Demon’s Souls as “Playable.” The project defines that category as games that can be completed with playable performance and no game-breaking glitches. The specific result surfaced in the listing is dated December 3, 2022. It is useful context, but it does not establish current compatibility for every game build or predict how the game will run on a particular computer. High-frame-rate patches have a narrow scope
The RPCS3 project wiki lists community 60 FPS and 120 FPS patch options for disc version 1.00 in the EU and US regions. The listed settings require Clock Scale 200 and Vblank Rate 120. These are patch options, not benchmark results: they do not guarantee those rates on a given PC, and the documented scope does not cover other game versions. Unlike the PS5 console release, RPCS3 involves emulator setup and depends on the computer and configuration. The available compatibility and patch information does not establish current PC requirements or a universal performance outcome. If you prefer not to configure and troubleshoot emulation, that is a practical reason to choose PS5.

For most players deciding between these two options, the PS5 remake is the straightforward recommendation: it is the current console release and has documented PS5 features. Pick RPCS3 when the original release itself is the point, and you are comfortable with emulator setup and its system-specific uncertainty. PlayStation lists Standard and Digital Deluxe editions; prices and availability vary by region and can change, so check the official page for current details.
