The RPCS3 team is not pursuing an official PlayStation 5 port, according to a report by Notebookcheck. Separately, an independent developer says an experimental RPCS3 homebrew build runs on a jailbroken PS5 Pro. That does not make it an official release or a ready-to-install emulator: the project is unsupported, built from source, and tested on only one console with a handful of games.
Two different projects, not a change in RPCS3’s plans
Notebookcheck reports that the RPCS3 team replied to a fan on X that it has “no interest” in bringing the emulator to PS5. The report also says the team had previously questioned whether the PS5’s Zen 2 CPU is powerful enough for proper PS3 emulation. The report does not reproduce the complete original X post, so “no interest” should be understood as the position attributed to the team by Notebookcheck, not as a detailed technical statement or a permanent policy. The separate PS5 Pro project is an independent homebrew effort by developer LavaVex. Its repository describes an experimental, unofficial build that the author says runs on a jailbroken console; it is unsupported by the RPCS3 team. The project’s README cautions: “This is an early, unofficial port, tested on a single console with a handful of games.” LavaVex’s project repository

Here, “native” refers to packaging RPCS3 as a homebrew title that runs on a jailbroken PS5, not to a Sony release, an official RPCS3 port, or a PS5 version available through the usual console storefront. According to the project, it renders through Vulkan using the RADV port from PS5_Vulkan, uses SceAudioOut for sound and ScePad for DualSense input, and presents RPCS3 Big Picture Mode as its frontend. Which games have been reported to work?
The developer’s claims cover only two named games, and they are individual reports rather than independent tests or a measure of compatibility across the PS3 library.
| Game | Developer’s reported result |
|---|---|
| Need for Speed Carbon (BLUS30016) | Reported as fully playable at 60 fps. |
| inFAMOUS (BCUS98119) | Reported to boot and play, but stutter and run below full speed in heavier areas. |
The repository says these were the only games tried when its README was written and warns that most games remain untested. Expect crashes, freezes, or games that fail to run; the results above should not be generalized to other titles. Project documentation
The tested setup is specific to one jailbroken PS5 Pro
The author says the build was tested on a PS5 Pro running firmware 13.60 with the Relapse jailbreak, etaHEN, ftpsrv, and ShadowMount+. Those details describe the developer’s reported test configuration, not a general compatibility guarantee or confirmation that the build works on stock PS5 hardware, other firmware versions, or other jailbreak setups. The repository provides source code and build scripts rather than a ready-to-install title binary. Its author recommends using an Arch or CachyOS Linux host, says other systems may work with equivalent dependencies, and lists roughly 20 GB of disk space for building. The scripts compile the dependencies and RPCS3; the README also names a console-side FTP service and ShadowMount+ among its installation prerequisites. Project documentation
The project expects users to supply their own PS3 firmware file, PS3UPDAT.PUP, and game dumps. It describes copying game folders to the console or using an exFAT USB drive. The documentation warns against redistributing the combined title, firmware, keys, or games because of licensing issues, and says users assume the risks associated with jailbreaks, payloads, and unsigned titles. These are the developer’s stated requirements and cautions, not an endorsement or a recommendation to modify a console. Project documentation
Does it play original PS3 discs?
The available project documentation describes user-provided firmware and game folders or dumps; it does not demonstrate direct playback of PS3 discs in the PS5’s drive. A question about disc playback in the project discussion is not evidence that the build supports it. Project repository Project discussion
