Rooted Pixel AI Core Fix: Reset Missing Features Carefully

If AI features stopped working after rooting a Pixel, a dated third-party workaround is to reset Google Play Services, Google Play Store and AI Core from Safe Mode, then restart and update Google Play Services and Google Photos. The procedure was published for reported Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro problems on January 24, 2024; it is not an official Google fix, and its suggested Play Integrity explanation remains unproven.

What this fix is—and what it is not

The procedure below comes from a DroidWin guide updated January 24, 2024. That guide described reports from rooted Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro owners whose AI-dependent functions disappeared, crashed or became unavailable. It did not establish a universal fault affecting every rooted Pixel, every Android release or every account.

The workaround removes updates and app data for three Google system components while the phone is in Safe Mode, reboots normally, and then updates selected components again. Because it changes system-app state, treat it as a troubleshooting experiment rather than a guaranteed repair. The guide itself warns that a smartwatch may need to be set up again and that payment cards may be deleted from Google Pay.

Root access adds another variable. The guide proposes that a custom device fingerprint written through build.prop, often used in attempts to pass Play Integrity, could be involved. Its wording is explicitly tentative: the fingerprint theory is a possible cause, not a demonstrated one. The companion video repeats that possibility but does not turn it into an official diagnosis (companion video).

Which AI features were reported as failing?

The January 2024 account grouped several unrelated-looking features under the same reported failure pattern. This is a historical symptom list, not a current compatibility promise. A feature absent from the table may still fail on a particular build, while a listed feature may work on another rooted phone.

Feature or app area Reported symptom in the guide How to interpret it
Magic Editor Unavailable or not functioning Reported for rooted Pixel 8-series users; availability can also depend on Google Photos and account conditions.
Magic Audio Eraser Not working Included in the guide’s affected-feature reports.
Best Take Not working Included in the same 2024 report.
Recorder summaries Not working The report concerns the Recorder app’s summary function, not every Recorder feature.
Video Boost Not working Listed as an affected Pixel camera workflow.
Automated Messages responses Not working The guide refers to some automated responses, not all messaging functions.
Direct My Call Not working Reported among phone-call assistance features.
Hold My Call Not working Reported among phone-call assistance features.
Call Screen Not working Reported among phone-call assistance features.
Phone app recording Not working Availability can vary by country, carrier and software release, so the report is not a statement of legal or regional availability.
Google Photos Magic Tools Could crash The guide specifically mentions crashes in Photos’ Magic Tools area.

These reports should help you decide whether your symptoms resemble the guide, but they cannot prove that rooting or a fingerprint change caused them. If only one feature fails while the rest work, an app, account, rollout or regional limitation may be a better explanation than the root configuration.

Before changing system apps

Confirm the scope

  • The documented cases concern rooted Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro phones. The guide does not establish the same behavior on Pixel 6, Pixel 7, Pixel 9 or non-Pixel devices.
  • Record your Android version, Google Play system update date, Google Play Services version, Google Photos version, root method and any module that changes device properties. This gives you a way to describe the exact configuration if the reset fails.
  • Write down which features fail and whether they fail with an error, crash immediately or simply never appear. Do not assume every missing feature has one cause.

Understand the side effects

Uninstalling updates and clearing data for Google Play Services, Google Play Store and AI Core can change local state. The source specifically warns that a connected smartwatch may require setup again and that cards stored in Google Pay may be deleted. Make sure you can complete those setups again before proceeding, and keep the relevant account credentials available.

  • Plan, create, and get more done with help from Gemini, your built-in AI assistant[3]; have it screen spam calls while you focus[6]; chat with Gemini to brainstorm your meal plan[7], or bring your ideas to life with Nano Banana[8]

The procedure does not require a cable, paid utility or replacement hardware. It uses Android’s Settings app and later app updates. If you cannot accept the possibility of re-adding cards or repeating watch setup, stop here and seek current support for your exact rooted configuration instead of applying the reset.

Step-by-step: the Safe Mode reset

Android labels and Safe Mode entry methods differ by release. Use the Safe Mode method documented for your Pixel’s current software; do not install an unfamiliar boot image or remove root files just to enter Safe Mode. Once Safe Mode is active, follow this order.

  1. Boot into Safe Mode. Wait for the phone to finish starting and confirm that Safe Mode is shown by the system. Third-party apps and root modules may be inactive in this mode, which is why the guide performs the reset there.
  2. Open Google Play Services. Go to Settings > Apps, select Google Play Services, open the app’s overflow menu if present, and choose Uninstall updates. Confirm the Android prompt. If your build presents a differently worded system-app option, do not select a destructive option that is not clearly an update rollback.
  3. Roll back Google Play Store. Return to the app list, open Google Play Store, choose Uninstall updates, and confirm.
  4. Roll back AI Core. In the same app list, open AI Core and choose Uninstall updates. Some Android builds may hide system components or use a slightly different label. If AI Core is not listed, stop rather than guessing which package is equivalent.
  5. Clear Google Play Services data. Open Storage & cache for Google Play Services and choose the option to clear its data or storage. Read the confirmation screen before accepting it.
  6. Clear Google Play Store data. In Google Play Store’s Storage & cache screen, clear its data or storage.
  7. Clear AI Core data. Open AI Core’s Storage & cache screen and clear its data or storage. The guide’s sequence resets all three components, not just the app associated with the feature that failed.
  8. Restart normally. Use the normal restart command and allow the phone to boot out of Safe Mode. Do not judge the result while Safe Mode is still active.
  9. Update the components. After the normal reboot, update Google Play Services and Google Photos. Google Play Services may update in the background or through its system prompt; Google Photos is updated through the Play Store. The guide specifically calls for these updates before retesting.

How to check the result

Open the app connected to each failed function and try the same operation that previously failed. For example, check the relevant editing tool in Google Photos, the summary workflow in Recorder or the call feature in the Phone app. Test one feature at a time and note whether it is missing, crashes, displays an error or completes successfully.

A successful reset for one function does not prove that every feature is restored. Conversely, one remaining failure does not prove that the reset was performed incorrectly; feature availability can depend on staged rollouts, country, carrier, account eligibility and the current app version. The 2024 guide provides no success rate and no current compatibility matrix.

If the reset does not restore AI Core features

Review root and integrity changes conservatively

The guide’s next suggestion is to switch between the root-module variants it discusses, pass the Play Integrity test with the existing fingerprint if possible, and repeat the reset sequence. It does not establish that any particular module, fingerprint or Integrity result is the correct configuration for your phone. Do not copy a fingerprint from a different model merely because it passes a check; that can create additional compatibility or security problems.

Keep a record of each change. Change one variable at a time, reboot when the module requires it, and test the same feature after each change. If the phone’s current fingerprint already passes the relevant Integrity check, the guide suggests trying the reset again before replacing it. Passing Integrity should be treated as a diagnostic signal, not proof that Pixel AI services will function.

Stop after a controlled attempt

If one documented reset and a careful review of the root configuration do not help, further random module changes can make the diagnosis harder. Capture the phone model, Android build, Google Play system update, app versions, root framework, modules, fingerprint setting and exact error. Then consult current support that understands both the Pixel software release and your root setup. A current support path is safer than repeatedly rolling system apps backward.

Why a fingerprint might be suspected

Root tools can alter properties that software uses to identify a device. Play Integrity is designed to let services evaluate aspects of device and software integrity, so root users sometimes change reported properties in an attempt to satisfy those checks. The 2024 guide speculates that a custom fingerprint in build.prop may have interfered with AI features even when the device appeared to pass Integrity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That explanation remains a hypothesis. The guide does not show a controlled comparison between an unchanged fingerprint and a custom one, and it does not show that every affected phone had the same property change. AI Core features can also depend on app versions, server-side availability and account or regional rules. Treat the fingerprint theory as one lead in troubleshooting, not as a diagnosis you can apply universally.

What later reports do—and do not—establish

A March 2025 Reddit discussion contains user reports about other AI Core problems, including an anecdote attributed to Google Support involving Gemini Nano downloads and an unlocked bootloader. That is a different reported situation, comes from a forum conversation rather than an official policy document, and does not validate the 2024 guide’s proposed fingerprint cause.

There is no current official Google confirmation in the cited material that this reset is an approved fix for rooted Pixels. Android, Google Photos and Play Services can change their labels and behavior after the guide’s publication, so verify every prompt on your own build before confirming it.

When this workaround is the wrong choice

  • Your phone is not a Pixel 8 or 8 Pro. The documented symptom set does not prove equivalent behavior on another generation.
  • You need uninterrupted payments or watch connectivity. The guide warns that cards may be deleted and watch setup may need repeating.
  • You cannot identify the packages safely. Never clear data for an unrelated system app because its name looks similar to AI Core.
  • The feature was never available in your region or account. A missing regional or staged feature is not repaired by resetting app data.
  • The phone is unstable after root changes. Stabilize the underlying root setup first and obtain device-specific support rather than adding more modules.

Practical decision guide

Your situation Safer next step Reason
Pixel 8/8 Pro, symptoms match several listed features, and you accept the side effects Perform the Safe Mode reset once, exactly in order This is the population and procedure described by the January 2024 guide.
Only one feature is missing, with no crash or error Check app, account, carrier and regional availability first The historical guide does not prove a single-feature failure is caused by root.
Google Pay cards or a smartwatch are essential today Delay the reset and seek current configuration-specific support The source warns of card deletion and watch re-setup.
The reset fails and you are considering a new fingerprint Record the existing state, make one controlled change at most, then retest The fingerprint explanation is speculative and an arbitrary change can add variables.
You use another Pixel generation or a newer Android release Look for guidance that names your exact model and build The cited report is limited to rooted Pixel 8-series cases.

Bottom line

For a rooted Pixel 8 or Pixel 8 Pro showing the same cluster of AI failures described in January 2024, the documented experiment is: Safe Mode, uninstall updates for Google Play Services, Google Play Store and AI Core, clear each app’s data, reboot normally, then update Google Play Services and Google Photos. It may restore features, but it carries the stated Google Pay and smartwatch risks and has no official current validation. The custom-fingerprint and Play Integrity explanation is only a possibility, so preserve your configuration, change root settings cautiously and stop for current support when the controlled reset does not work.
