The danger appears when distance is used to avoid reasonable verification and is combined with a fake or inconsistent identity, secrecy, pressure, isolation, or a request for money. Romance scammers often build trust first, then ask for travel costs, emergency help, gift cards, cryptocurrency, account access, or an investment. Treat the behavior as a pattern of risk signals rather than trying to diagnose someone from a single clue.
What a romance scam looks like
In a romance scam, a person creates or uses a false identity to form an emotional relationship and eventually obtain money, financial information, account access, or images. The profile may use stolen photographs, an invented occupation, or a real person’s details combined with a different name. A polished profile, fluent messages, and intense affection do not authenticate the person behind the account.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) describes a common sequence: contact begins on a dating or social platform, the conversation moves quickly to private messaging, the person claims to be in love while living far away, and then an urgent financial problem appears. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) also warns about attempts to isolate someone from friends and family, requests for inappropriate images or financial information, and repeated excuses for not meeting.

These behaviors are warning signs, not a test that can prove every profile is fraudulent. A genuine partner can be shy, busy, deployed, caring for relatives, or constrained by immigration or travel rules. The important question is whether the person responds to reasonable verification and respects your boundaries without turning the relationship into a financial transaction.

The strongest romance scam warning signs
A request for money, payment, or financial access
The clearest red flag is a request that you pay, transfer, borrow, invest, or provide access on the person’s behalf. The story may involve an airline ticket, customs or visa fees, medical treatment, a family crisis, legal trouble, a damaged phone, or a business opportunity. The payment method can be a gift card, wire transfer, cryptocurrency, payment-app transfer, bank transfer, or cash.
Investment-themed romance scams are especially dangerous because the request can arrive after weeks or months of conversation. The person may present themselves as an expert, show fabricated profits, or direct you to a trading site. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission warns that romantic contacts can solicit forex, precious-metals, or digital-asset investments. Do not invest because someone you met online says the opportunity is safe, exclusive, or guaranteed.
Immediate intensity and pressure
Scammers often use constant messaging, declarations of love, or promises of marriage before a normal relationship has had time to develop. Pressure can then be applied to make you act immediately: “send it today,” “keep this between us,” or “if you loved me, you would help.” Urgency is designed to prevent you from checking the story or consulting someone you trust.

Persistent inability or refusal to meet
A person may be genuinely far away, but repeated excuses that never lead to a workable plan deserve scrutiny. The FBI advises caution when someone has not met you after a few months and continues to provide explanations. That is precautionary guidance, not a universal deadline: there is no validated number of days that proves a relationship is fraudulent.
Concern rises when the refusal to meet is paired with avoidance of reasonable video calls, contradictory details, or a financial request. A single canceled trip proves little; an endless cycle of cancellations followed by an emergency bill is a pattern.
Identity and story inconsistencies
Pay attention to details that change: job title, location, family members, time zone, military or travel history, or the way the person describes earlier conversations. A scammer may be managing several identities and forget which version you heard. Grammar or accent alone is not evidence of fraud, and genuine people can make ordinary mistakes. Look for material contradictions that appear when you ask calm, specific questions over time.

Rapid off-platform migration and secrecy
Moving to a private messaging app is not inherently suspicious, but a demand to leave the dating service immediately removes platform safety tools and makes reporting harder. Be careful if the person insists on secrecy, discourages you from telling friends or family, or says other people are trying to sabotage the relationship. Isolation makes it easier for a scammer to control the conversation.

Never provide passwords, one-time security codes, bank-login details, copies of identity documents, or full payment-card information to an online romantic contact. Requests for intimate images can become sextortion: the person threatens to publish the images unless you pay. Save evidence and report the account instead of negotiating.
Suspiciously reused photographs
A reverse-image search can reveal the same photograph under another name, on a stock-photo page, or on multiple unrelated profiles. A match is a strong reason to stop and verify. A search with no result does not prove authenticity; private, newly posted, or altered images may not be indexed.

Distance versus a legitimate long-distance relationship
Distance is a circumstance, not a verdict. Genuine couples can live in different countries, meet through work or study, or maintain a relationship while planning a future move. Compare conduct across several dimensions rather than looking for one “magic” clue.

No column certifies a person as genuine or fraudulent. A real partner may show one concern in isolation; the combination of avoidance, pressure, isolation, and financial demands is what should stop the relationship from progressing.

How to check an online love interest safely
- Slow the pace. Do not let declarations of love or a crisis dictate a same-day decision. Write down names, dates, locations, occupations, and promises so you can compare the story later.
- Keep the conversation on the platform at first. Use the service’s reporting and blocking tools while you assess the person. If you move to another app, keep the original profile and messages.
- Run a reverse-image search. Search the profile photo and any other distinctive image. Look for reuse with another name or a location that conflicts with the story. Treat a clean search as inconclusive, not as proof.
- Search the stated occupation with “scammer.” The FTC recommends checking claims such as a particular job, business, or military role alongside that term. Compare results carefully; a matching occupation alone does not identify an individual.
- Ask ordinary questions over time. Ask about their schedule, city, work, family, and practical plans in separate conversations. Watch whether answers remain coherent rather than trying to trap the person with a quiz.
- Use live, reasonable verification. A video call can show that a person exists and is controlling the account, but it cannot establish their name, intentions, or financial honesty. Ask for a normal conversation rather than accepting a prerecorded clip or a video that never permits interaction.
- Tell a trusted person. Share the profile, messages, and proposed plans with a friend or relative before sending anything or traveling. An outside perspective can spot pressure and inconsistencies that are hard to see while you are emotionally involved.
- Set a financial boundary. Say clearly that you will not send money, invest, open accounts, receive funds, or forward payments. A respectful partner will accept that boundary; anger, guilt, threats, or a new emergency are significant escalation signals.
What you should never send or do
- Do not send cash, gift-card numbers, wire transfers, cryptocurrency, payment-app transfers, or investment funds to an online romantic contact you have not met.
- Do not open a bank, trading, or payment account for the person, and do not receive and forward money. That can expose you to stolen-funds schemes and legal trouble.
- Do not share passwords, one-time codes, bank credentials, identity documents, or a full payment-card number.
- Do not send intimate images under pressure. Preserve the messages if the person threatens you.
- Do not borrow from family, take a loan, or sell property to finance a promised visit or investment.
FBI Special Agent Christine Beining summarized the financial rule plainly: “If you don’t know them, don’t send money.” She also described the operation as “a criminal enterprise like any other,” despite the romantic presentation.
What to do when you suspect a scam
If no money has been sent
- Stop replying. Do not argue, warn the person that you are reporting them, or click new links they send.
- Save screenshots, usernames, profile URLs, email addresses, phone numbers, payment instructions, and the dates of conversations.
- Report the account to the dating or social platform, then block it. Reporting helps the service investigate related profiles.
- Report the fraud to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. For suspected internet crime, file a complaint with the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center at ic3.gov.
- Tell someone you trust. Shame and embarrassment are common, but secrecy benefits the scammer and makes further contact more likely.
If you paid or shared account information
- Contact the bank, card issuer, wire service, cryptocurrency exchange, or payment app immediately. Ask whether the transaction can be canceled, recalled, or frozen. Recovery is possible in some situations but is never guaranteed.
- Change compromised passwords and enable multi-factor authentication. If a bank or payment account was exposed, ask the provider what additional restrictions or monitoring it recommends.
- Report the incident through the FTC and FBI channels above, even if the amount was small or the payment cannot be recovered.
- Keep every receipt, wallet address, transfer record, and message. Do not pay a “recovery agent” who promises to retrieve the money for an upfront fee; that can be a second scam.
- If you face threats, stalking, or extortion, contact local law enforcement and the platform. If you are in immediate danger, use your local emergency number.
Banking and legal remedies differ outside the United States. Contact your country’s financial regulator, police service, and payment provider if you are elsewhere.
How common are romance-scam losses?
The FTC reported that consumers lost more than $1 billion to romance scammers in 2023 in an alert published in February 2024. The agency had reported $547 million sent to online romance scammers in 2021 in its February 2022 “Love, not Money” report. These are FTC reports for the specified years, not a count of every incident worldwide; many victims do not report losses.
Loss figures also understate nonfinancial harm, including stolen identities, compromised accounts, blackmail, and emotional distress. Treat a request for money as a decisive reason to stop, regardless of whether the requested amount seems small.
Questions that need a careful answer
Is a video call proof that someone is real?
No. It can show that a live person controls the account, but that person could still be using a false name, hiding a partner, or planning a financial scam. Use video as one check among consistent details, independent information, and respect for boundaries.
How long should I wait before meeting someone in person?
There is no universal safe timetable. Meet only when identity and plans are sufficiently clear, choose a public location, tell someone where you will be, arrange your own transportation, and do not let the other person’s travel costs become your responsibility. Persistent avoidance after months is a warning signal, not an automatic diagnosis.
What if the person already knows personal details about me?
Assume any information shared in messages may be exposed. Tighten privacy settings, change reused passwords, and watch financial and social accounts for unusual activity. Familiar details can come from public profiles or data breaches and do not authenticate the person.
