A romance scam usually turns a fabricated relationship into a request for money, gifts, travel costs, or help with an emergency. A pig-butchering scam turns a relationship—or a friendship, professional connection, or unsolicited message—into a staged investment opportunity, commonly involving cryptocurrency. The two can overlap: a romance may be the trust-building story for a pig-butchering scheme, but pig butchering does not require romance.
If someone you met online wants you to send money for a personal problem, treat it as a romance-scam warning. If that person wants you to deposit money into an investment platform, promises unusually high or guaranteed returns, or says they can teach you a secret crypto method, treat it as investment fraud and stop before paying.

The difference at a glance
| Question | Romance scam | Pig-butchering scam |
|---|---|---|
| How trust is created | A fake romantic identity develops an intimate relationship, often through dating or social platforms. | The criminal cultivates confidence through romance, friendship, a professional connection, or unsolicited contact. |
| Main request | Money or a valuable item for an emergency, travel, a gift, or another personal need. | A deposit or transfer into an investment opportunity, often cryptocurrency. |
| Core deception | Fabricated identity, feelings, circumstances, or crisis. | Fabricated investing expertise, returns, account balances, and sometimes an entire trading platform. |
| Typical pressure point | Emotional urgency: a medical bill, travel problem, lost wallet, or similar personal crisis. | Financial urgency: a limited opportunity, secret method, promised return, or demand for an additional payment. |
| What happens at the exit | The money is sent to the person or an account they control, and contact may fade or continue with new requests. | The victim may see impressive but fictitious profits, then be unable to withdraw funds or be told to pay another fee. |
These are patterns, not legal categories that exclude one another. The Federal Bureau of Investigation describes cryptocurrency investment fraud—commonly called pig butchering—as one of the most prevalent and damaging fraud schemes. A romantic approach can be the opening act, while other cases begin with a text message or an apparently ordinary business or friendship conversation.
How a romance scam develops
1. A carefully managed identity
The scammer creates a profile that appears available, attractive, successful, or unusually compatible. The profile may be on a dating service, social network, messaging app, or another online community. The identity is not the person it claims to be, and the relationship is conducted for financial gain rather than genuine affection.

2. Fast emotional escalation
Strong feelings can appear very quickly. The person may call you a soulmate, discuss a future together, or make the relationship feel exclusive before you have met. Speed matters because intense attachment can make a later request seem like an act of loyalty rather than a financial decision.
3. Repeated reasons not to meet
A new love interest repeatedly avoids an in-person meeting or offers explanations for why a video call, visit, or ordinary verification is impossible. A single scheduling problem proves nothing; a continuing pattern becomes significant when it is paired with intense affection and financial pressure.
4. A personal emergency or gift request
The request may involve medical care, a travel problem, a stolen wallet, a ticket, a gift, rent, or another immediate need. The scammer may ask for cryptocurrency, gift cards, a wire transfer, or a payment-app transfer. The story is designed to make delay feel cruel and questioning feel disloyal.

Sending money does not necessarily end the relationship. The person may promise repayment, create another emergency, or ask for a larger amount. This can turn one payment into a sequence of payments while the victim is trying to preserve the imagined relationship.

How pig butchering develops
1. Contact does not have to be romantic
The FBI describes approaches from people met online or through unsolicited text messages. The contact can present as a romantic interest, a new friend, a professional acquaintance, or someone who simply sent the wrong message. The central issue is not the label of the relationship; it is the investment pitch that follows the trust-building.
2. The “teacher” or insider pitch
The contact offers to teach you cryptocurrency investing, says they have a secret or proven method, claims special expertise, or presents an opportunity unavailable to ordinary investors. The Federal Trade Commission’s consumer guidance is direct: if someone you meet online says they want to help you invest in cryptocurrency, it is an investment scam.
3. A directed route to an unfamiliar platform
You may be told to download an app, open an account, use a particular website, or move the conversation to another messaging service. The platform can display deposits, trades, and rapidly rising profits. A polished interface is not proof that the trades or balances exist; the displayed gains may be fabricated to encourage a larger deposit.
4. Escalating deposits
Early success shown on the screen is used to justify sending more. The scammer may encourage a larger position, a new opportunity, or money from savings. The apparent account balance can make the victim believe that withdrawing a portion will soon recover the original deposit and produce a profit.

- [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by
5. Withdrawal blockage
When the victim tries to withdraw, the platform may reject the request, claim that taxes or compliance charges are due, or demand another payment before releasing the balance. The FBI identifies inability to withdraw as a recurring outcome. Paying the supposed release fee does not solve the underlying problem; it gives the scammer a reason to demand another payment.
Warning signs that deserve a stop
Relationship and identity signals
- A new online romantic contact declares intense feelings unusually quickly.
- The person repeatedly cannot meet in person or provides changing explanations for avoiding a normal video conversation.
- The contact insists on text-only communication or pushes you to a different messaging platform.
- The profile, story, job, location, or schedule is difficult to verify independently.
None of these signs alone proves fraud. A legitimate person can be private, travel frequently, or have a complicated schedule. The risk rises sharply when emotional intensity, unverifiable identity, and a request for money appear together.
Personal-money signals
- The person asks you to solve an emergency, pay for travel, send a gift, or cover another personal expense.
- The requested method is cryptocurrency, a gift card, a wire transfer, or a payment-app transfer.
- The request is urgent and framed as a test of your love, loyalty, or trust.
- After you help once, a new crisis or repayment explanation appears.
Investment signals
- A romantic contact, friend, or professional connection introduces investing when you did not ask for advice.
- The person offers to teach cryptocurrency investing or claims a secret method or insider expertise.
- Returns are described as large, guaranteed, risk-free, or unusually consistent.
- You are directed to an unfamiliar investment website or app and told to use a specific wallet, exchange, or payment route.
- The person asks you to move the conversation away from the original platform before discussing the opportunity.
- The displayed account shows exceptional profits but does not permit a normal withdrawal.
- You are told to pay a tax, fee, deposit, or verification charge to release your own money.
An investment suggestion from someone you know is not automatically fraudulent. The combination of an unsolicited pitch, personal trust-building, guaranteed returns, a directed platform, and withdrawal trouble is the critical pattern.

- Identify the immediate transfer. Is the request for a personal bill, gift, travel, or emergency? That points to the conventional romance-scam pattern. Is it a deposit intended to generate returns? Treat it as suspected investment fraud.
- Check whether the relationship is being used as authorization. Statements such as “If you trusted me, you would do this” are pressure, not evidence of identity or legitimacy.
- Separate visible numbers from withdrawable money. A balance on a website or app has no value to you unless you can withdraw it through a verified, independent process without paying another demand.
- Stop when the categories combine. A romantic contact who asks for an emergency payment and later offers a crypto investment may be running overlapping schemes. Do not wait for a perfect label before protecting your money.
What to do if you suspect either scam
1. Stop sending money and stop the conversation
Do not make the next payment, test the platform with a smaller amount, or send a fee that supposedly unlocks your balance. Stop communicating with the suspected scammer. Do not negotiate for proof; continued conversation gives the person more opportunities to create urgency or exploit information you have already shared.
2. Preserve evidence before blocking or reporting
Save messages, emails, profile names, telephone numbers, user names, wallet addresses, payment instructions, transaction records, and screenshots of the investment platform. Record dates and amounts. Keep copies in a location the scammer cannot alter. Evidence is easier to preserve before an account disappears or a conversation is deleted.
3. Contact the financial provider promptly
If you sent money, contact the bank, card issuer, payment provider, wire service, or cryptocurrency exchange immediately. Explain that the transfer is connected to suspected fraud and ask whether it can be stopped, recalled, or flagged. The provider may have a time-sensitive process, and waiting for the scammer’s promised repayment gives you no protection.

Use the platform’s reporting tools for the dating, social, messaging, or investment account. For suspected cryptocurrency investment fraud, the FBI directs victims to file a complaint with the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3). The FTC directs suspected romance-scam victims to report at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. If you live outside the United States, use the equivalent national fraud and cybercrime agencies for your location; reporting routes and financial remedies differ by country.

5. Reject “guaranteed recovery” offers
Victims are sometimes contacted by people who promise to recover crypto or retrieve a romance-scam payment for an upfront fee. Treat a guaranteed recovery claim as another fraud warning. The official guidance described here does not endorse recovery services, and paying an unknown intermediary creates another loss without addressing the original scam.
Why payment method matters
The method requested can help you recognize the danger and tell a financial provider what happened. Cryptocurrency, gift cards, wires, and payment-app transfers are common requests because they can be difficult to reverse and can move quickly. That does not mean every transfer through one of these methods is fraudulent; it means an online love interest asking for one should trigger a pause and independent verification.
The FTC reported that cryptocurrency and wire transfers together represented more than 60% of reported romance-scam losses in 2022. This figure describes reported losses by payment method, not every romance scam or every loss. It is a reason to act quickly after a transfer, not a promise that a bank or exchange can recover it.
What official figures show—and what they do not
| Figure | Source and period | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| 4,323 victims notified; 76% were unaware they were being scammed; estimated savings of $285,639,989 | FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center, 2024 Internet Crime Report, published 2025; Operation Level Up program | These are Operation Level Up results, not a count of all victims or all cryptocurrency-investment losses. |
| More than 4,300 potential victims notified and an estimated $285 million saved | FBI, February 13, 2025; rounded program totals as of January 2025 | This is a rounded public description of the same type of intervention, not a separate estimate of total victims. |
| 40% of people who said they lost money to a romance scam in 2022 said contact began on social media | FTC, 2023 consumer statistics | This is a consumer-reported contact channel, not the share of the entire population exposed to romance scams. |
| 19% of those consumers said contact began on a website or app | FTC, 2023 consumer statistics | The figure covers reported consumers who said they lost money, not every romance-scam report. |
| More than 60% of reported romance-scam losses in 2022 involved cryptocurrency and wire transfers together | FTC, 2023 | This describes reported losses by payment method and should not be generalized to every loss. |
The FBI’s figures also illustrate why a victim may not realize what is happening: in the Operation Level Up results, 76% of the people notified were unaware they were being scammed. A convincing relationship, professional tone, or attractive dashboard is not evidence that the opportunity is genuine.
Common mistakes that make the loss worse
- Sending a “small test.” A small successful-looking deposit can be used to establish confidence and prompt a larger transfer.
- Paying a release fee. A demand for tax, compliance, or verification money after a withdrawal request is a continuation of the fraud, not proof that the balance exists.
- Waiting for the relationship to resolve. Promises of a visit, repayment, or future wedding do not verify identity or protect funds.
- Deleting the conversation immediately. Blocking is sensible after evidence is preserved; deleting messages first can remove information useful to a bank, platform, or investigator.
- Assuming a romantic approach is required. Pig-butchering schemes also use friendship, professional contact, and unsolicited messages.
- Treating reported statistics as personal odds. Agency figures describe specific reporting populations and periods; they cannot tell you the probability that a particular profile is genuine.
Geography and the limits of the guidance
The reporting and statistics above come from U.S. federal sources: the FBI and IC3 for law-enforcement guidance and cryptocurrency-investment fraud, and the FTC for consumer advice and romance-scam statistics. A bank’s reversal options, complaint process, and privacy rules depend on the country and payment method. Readers elsewhere should use their national fraud-reporting body and contact the relevant financial institution without delay.
No particular wallet, trading tool, antivirus product, book, or identity-monitoring service is required by the official guidance to recognize or respond to these scams. The protective actions are behavioral and procedural: do not send the money, preserve evidence, report the account and suspected crime, and alert the financial provider quickly.
