Roman Sands RE:Build Review: Resort Sim, Survival Horror, and the End of the World

Roman Sands RE:Build is built around a striking contrast: one storyline asks you to serve demanding guests at a luxury resort as the Sun threatens the world, while another puts you in a failing zoological research facility where survival is at stake. That setup makes it an unusual mix of service simulation, puzzles, adventure, visual-novel storytelling, and horror. The official description establishes an intriguing premise, but it does not by itself settle how well the game balances those parts in play.

What is Roman Sands RE:Build?

Developed by Arbitrary Metric and published by Serenity Forge, Roman Sands RE:Build is an apocalypse-themed adventure released on September 16, 2026. Serenity Forge describes it as a journey that collides visual novel, adventure, puzzle solving, horror, and survival simulation. The publisher also describes the setting as “two broken realities”: a timeless luxury retreat and a decaying zoological research facility. Serenity Forge’s official game page presents those strands as connected parts of one story.

The premise’s appeal is its friction between the mundane and the catastrophic. Guests still expect service as the world approaches its end; elsewhere, a research station is failing while a parasite threatens what remains. The title’s unusual genre mix is therefore more than a list of labels: it sets expectations for shifts between routine tasks, exploration, puzzles, and psychological unease.

Two settings, two kinds of pressure

The Resort: service work under apocalyptic skies

In the Resort storyline, you are treated as staff at a luxury retreat. Guests make demands, and progression involves ranking up, earning equipment, investigating the resort, and solving puzzles while looking for a way out. This gives the setting a deliberately dissonant premise: service routines continue even as the Sun threatens to consume the world.

That structure may be the game’s most divisive design choice. Repeated item collection and fetch-style tasks can make the player feel trapped in the resort’s work cycle, but they can also make that cycle part of the story’s pressure. Whether the repetition feels purposeful or simply tiring depends on how much a player values atmosphere and thematic connections over mechanical variety.

The Facility: a failing station and a survival dilemma

The other storyline moves to a decrepit zoological research facility. You are among the last people alive, caring for a failing station while a parasite presents a threat; a voice over the radio adds another point of contact in an increasingly isolated situation. The available official description establishes a survival dilemma but does not detail its solutions, so it is safer to approach this strand as a shift in setting and stakes rather than assume it plays like a conventional combat-focused horror game.

What early player reactions suggest—and what they do not

Steam’s community page contains sharply different individual impressions. One recommended review reports a little over six hours to finish without completing everything and praises the relationship between the mechanics, plot, and themes. Another reviewer marked the game not recommended, objecting to repetitive item collection and fetch-style progression. These are individual accounts, not a representative survey or a critic consensus, but they point directly to the key question for prospective players: how much repetition are you willing to accept for an unusual, atmospheric story?

Steam discussions also document launch-period reports involving dialogue softlocks, progress-blocking issues, high-contrast text, and options to reduce camera and interface movement. A separate developer post said achievement tracking had initially failed because of a build-script misconfiguration and was later restored; achievements earned before the fix were not recovered. These reports describe launch-period conditions and do not establish what the current patched version does. Check recent platform updates or player discussions if a specific issue could affect your decision.

Who is likely to enjoy it?

The premise is a better fit for players drawn to narrative-driven, surreal adventures than for anyone expecting a straightforward action-horror game. Consider these trade-offs before buying:

  • Good fit: You enjoy atmospheric or psychological horror, unusual transitions between settings, and stories where everyday tasks can carry thematic weight.
  • Potential mismatch: You have little patience for repeated service chores, item collection, or fetch-style progression.
  • Worth checking first: You need particular accessibility options or want assurance that a launch-period bug has been fixed on your chosen platform.

The evidence available from individual Steam reviews does not support a broad verdict about how most players respond. Instead, it clarifies the likely point of disagreement: the same repetitive work that one player may see as connected to the game’s themes may feel like friction to another.

Project Songbird - PlayStation 5
  • A dark, enthralling 4-5 hour narrative to keep you hooked and guessing until the end. Gorgeous visuals as you traverse numerous and diverse environments, presented with a cinematic, film-like aesthetic. Ranged and melee combat with upgradeable weapons to help you survive your nightmarish journey.
  • A stellar voice cast, starring Valerie Rose Lohman (What Remains of Edith Finch, Wolfenstein: Youngblood), Jonah Scott (Dying Light 2: Stay Human, Date Everything), and Aleks Le (Persona 3: Reload, Marvel Rivals, Ghost of Yotei).
  • A beautifully dynamic and haunting soundtrack composed and performed by Jacob Noska, and Jonah Henthorne: members of the band Auric Echoes.
  • The puzzles you encounter are more than your standard key hunt. Project Songbird rewards those with an eye for detail, making each puzzle a challenge of creativity and wits.
  • The combat of Project Songbird offers a variety of approaches inspired by the classics of the survival horror genre. Melee and gunplay is slow and weighty, and ammo is incredibly scarce. However, combat isn't your only option, as you have a multitude of tools at your disposal to aid in sneaking past any creatures that wish to do you harm.

Verdict

Roman Sands RE:Build has a genuinely distinctive foundation: a luxury resort’s repetitive service economy sits alongside the collapse of a research facility, with both framed by apocalypse and horror. Its strongest appeal is the tension between those worlds and the chance that routine tasks will deepen the story rather than interrupt it. Its clearest risk is that those same tasks may feel repetitive. If surreal atmosphere and narrative experimentation matter more to you than consistently varied mechanics, the premise is compelling; if chore loops quickly wear you down, approach it cautiously.
