Roman Sands RE:Build Review: A Fiendish, Glitch-Soaked Two-Act Adventure

Roman Sands RE:Build is worth playing if you want a surreal narrative game that keeps changing the rules around you. Its first half turns a luxury resort into a routine-optimization puzzle; its second strands you in a failing research station for a slower, more oppressive survival-horror experience. That contrast is the game’s defining appeal—and its biggest hurdle. Hit Crit’s review describes a nearly fourteen-hour playthrough, but that is one reviewer’s experience, not a guaranteed completion time.

What kind of game is Roman Sands RE:Build?

Developed by Arbitrary Metric and published by Serenity Forge, Roman Sands RE:Build was released on September 16, 2026. Steam also lists Beep Japan Inc. as a publisher. The game brings together adventure, visual-novel storytelling, puzzles, horror, and survival simulation. Steam categorizes it as an adventure, RPG, simulation, and strategy title, and includes tags such as immersive sim, first-person, psychological horror, and narrative. Those labels describe different facets rather than a single, consistent play style.

Serenity Forge’s premise begins with you washed ashore at a luxury retreat as the sun approaches a world-ending event. Guests still expect service: you rank up, earn equipment, handle demands, investigate the resort, and solve puzzles in search of an exit. The story then moves to a decaying zoological research station, where you take on caretaker duties amid a radio voice, a dead cow, a parasite, and failing survival systems. The official framing treats the two narratives as overlapping and asks whether their worlds are the same.

How do the two acts play?

The resort: tasks, guests, and investigation

Hit Crit describes the opening act as a cycle of serving four residents and making those routines more efficient. Tasks include fetching items, giving massages, and cleaning, alongside puzzles and investigation. The appeal is the dissonance: ordinary service work continues while catastrophe looms, and the resort’s apparent routines become part of a stranger mystery.

The structure asks you to engage with repeated tasks rather than simply push through a sequence of action scenes. That can make the resort feel distinctive if you enjoy learning a system and fitting its pieces together. It can also feel like friction if you came for brisk exploration or constant forward momentum.

The research station: slow, stressful survival

The second act shifts to a failing research station. Hit Crit describes managing oxygen flow and working through valves, buttons, and levers while investigating a parasite. The pace is slower and more isolating than the resort section, with survival systems adding pressure to the investigation.

Hit Crit finds this section exceptionally challenging and stressful, but considers it an important thematic counterpart to the first act. The change is not a gentle variation on the resort loop: it is a substantial shift in rhythm and atmosphere. Whether that feels like an ambitious contrast or an exhausting detour will depend on how much you enjoy slow, oppressive survival play.

Are the puzzles difficult, and is a controller comfortable?

Hit Crit says some puzzles rely on common sense or trial and error, and that the user interface could be clearer. One specific example is the orrery puzzle: the reviewer found it frustrating with a controller and manageable after switching to keyboard and mouse. That is an account of one review playthrough, not an independently reproduced compatibility test, but it is a useful warning if you strongly prefer playing with a controller.

The evidence points to two separate considerations: puzzle signposting may ask you to experiment, and at least one puzzle reportedly felt less comfortable with a controller. If either unclear clues or input friction quickly spoil a game for you, approach this one cautiously. Hit Crit also praises the drum-and-bass soundtrack; no official soundtrack credits or track list are established in the reviewed material.

Is Roman Sands RE:Build an immersive sim?

Steam uses the immersive-sim tag, but the game is not best understood as a uniformly paced immersive sim. Its resort act emphasizes routine, task optimization, guest demands, and puzzles; its research-station act emphasizes isolation and survival-system management. The broader official pitch combines several forms, including adventure, visual novel, horror, and simulation.

For a useful comparison with other narrative or immersive-sim games, consider how much time each spends on routine optimization versus open exploration, how abrupt the act transition feels, how clearly puzzles are signposted, how comfortable the controls are for your preferred input, and how much a distinctive atmosphere and soundtrack matter to you. These are ways to judge fit, not measured rankings against other games.

Is Roman Sands RE:Build worth playing?

It is a strong fit for players who like surreal narrative games, investigation, puzzles, uncomfortable atmospheres, and sharp tonal changes. Its unusual pairing of resort service routines with isolated survival horror is its clearest reason to play. Hit Crit’s response also makes clear why it will not suit everyone: the second act is slower and more stressful, puzzle guidance can be opaque, and the experience makes substantial demands on the player.

  • Consider it if: you enjoy unusual narrative structures, repeated tasks with an investigative purpose, and survival sections that favor tension over speed.
  • Think twice if: you want quick pacing throughout, gentle difficulty, explicit puzzle signposting, or consistently comfortable controller interaction.

Hit Crit’s review, dated September 24, 2026, reports a playthrough of nearly fourteen hours. Treat that as one reviewer’s experience rather than a completion-time estimate that applies to every player. The review copy was supplied by the developer, as disclosed in the review result.

Platforms, languages, and PC requirements

The publisher links to Steam, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox storefronts. Steam lists a Windows version and single-player support; PlayStation lists PS4 and PS5. The U.S. Nintendo listing describes a digital Switch edition with a 5.6 GB file size and says it is supported on Switch 2 with consistent behavior. These listings establish digital storefront availability, not whether a physical edition exists. Check your platform’s regional store for current availability and language details.

Steam lists English full audio and subtitles in 11 languages: English, French, Italian, German, Spanish (Spain), Portuguese (Brazil), Russian, Spanish (Latin America), Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, and Japanese. Nintendo’s U.S. listing also includes British and American English among supported languages.

Steam’s minimum Windows requirements are Windows 10, an Intel i5-equivalent processor or higher, 4 GB of RAM, a graphics accelerator with at least 2 GB of video RAM, DirectX 12, and 8 GB of available storage. Requirements can change, so confirm the current platform listing before purchasing.

Content descriptors

Content notices differ by platform and rating system. Steam’s developer description lists depictions of alcohol and tobacco, blood, strong language, mild violence, and suggestive sexual themes. Nintendo’s U.S. listing gives an ESRB content description of blood, language, mild violence, sexual themes, and use of alcohol and tobacco. Consult the listing for your platform and region for the applicable descriptor.
