Archaeologists have identified a temple dedicated to Mars in the civilian settlement beside the Roman fort of Kapersburg in Hesse, Germany. Finds reported by the state archaeology service include a statuette of Victoria, the Roman goddess of victory, two other votive stones and fragments of a second statue that probably depicts Mars. The temple is in the settlement, or vicus, outside the fort—not inside its walls.
What was found at Kapersburg?
The Hessen State Office for Monument Preservation announced the finds on 25 September 2026, following excavations in the vicus beside Kapersburg fort. Alongside the Mars-dedicated temple, archaeologists reported two additional votive stones, a Victoria statuette and fragments of another statue that are thought to depict Mars. Inscriptions on the finds are still being studied with Professor Markus Scholz of Goethe University Frankfurt, so their full contents and significance have not yet been established. The state announcement gives the official account.

What the Victory figure represents
Victoria was the Roman personification of victory. Live Science describes the statuette as a winged figure holding a palm branch and laurel wreath; the state announcement confirms the identification as Victoria but does not give that full description. The statuette is one of the religious objects found in the settlement, not evidence by itself of who worshipped there. Live Science’s 5 October 2026 report includes the object description.

Where is the temple: in the fort or the settlement?
Kapersburg lies in the eastern Taunus region of Hesse. A Roman fort stood there, and a vicus—a civilian settlement associated with a fort—grew alongside it. The newly reported temple is in that vicus. This distinction matters: the find documents religious activity in the settlement connected to a military frontier site, but the evidence does not establish that the temple was inside the garrison or used exclusively by soldiers.

Excavations of the vicus began in 2024 as a partnership between hessenARCHÄOLOGIE and provincial Roman archaeology researchers at Goethe University. The wooded site has helped preserve remains close to the surface. Archaeologists report well-preserved layers and structures only centimetres beneath the forest floor, along with traces of roads and terraces, a smithing area, and later residential construction over a leveled craft area. These discoveries illuminate how the settlement was organized and changed, but do not show that all of its features operated at the same time. The state office’s excavation announcement describes the broader work.
Was the temple first discovered in 2026?
No. A 2023 excavation campaign had already uncovered temple foundations and a votive stone dedicated to Mars. The September 2026 announcement reports further discoveries from the ongoing investigation; it should not be read as the first identification of a temple at the site. The earlier stone is displayed at the Wehrturm Museum in Rosbach vor der Höhe. That does not establish that the newly reported statuette, stones or statue fragments are on display there. The state office’s 12 May 2026 account covers the earlier campaign and the museum display.

What does the discovery say about Kapersburg’s history?
Kapersburg was a frontier garrison. According to the state archaeology service, the auxiliary unit Numerus Nidensium was stationed there for about 150 years, and Roman forces left around the middle of the third century. Live Science gives approximately A.D. 275, so the end of Roman occupation is best treated as an approximate date rather than a precisely established year.
The temple and its offerings add evidence of religious practice in the settlement beside that garrison. The reported finds do not identify the worshippers or establish whether the temple served soldiers, civilians or both. They also do not, on their own, show how widespread worship of Mars or Victoria was across the region.

What remains uncertain?
- The second statue: The fragments probably depict Mars, but that identification is tentative.
- The inscriptions: They are still being studied, so their readings and implications remain unsettled.
- Later use of the site: A late-antique fibula and handmade pottery may indicate activity after Roman occupation, possibly involving the Alemanni. The state archaeology service says more evidence is needed before that interpretation can be confirmed.
- Preservation: Archaeologist Kai Mückenberger told Live Science, “The astonishing thing is the exquisite preservation of the archaeological layers that start right beneath the forest floor.” The wooded setting is offered as an explanation for the survival of these layers.
Can visitors see the finds?
The earlier Mars-dedicated votive stone is on display at the Wehrturm Museum in Rosbach vor der Höhe, according to the state office. The sources do not confirm that the newly announced finds are on display, or provide current access details for the excavation. Check with the museum or the site authorities before planning a visit.
